For all you Sondheim-philes out there, THIS is the scene that made him fall in love with this film, and decide to write a musical. It was the famous staircase scene, and now having FINALLY seen it myself, I can understand why. It's beautifully and subtly played.

Troppo accademico... Fosca perde tutto il magnetismo che l'è proprio. La sua abnorme capigliatura nera, dov'è finita? La sua squisita raffinatezza nel vestirsi? E non dimentichiamoci che ella ha solo venticinque anni, benché malata e scheletrica! Qui pare una vecchina un po' fuori di testa... tutta la carica intellettuale, nonché repulsivamente sensuale, non esiste.
