@sonnetg they are little red plastic spaces shaped similar to pads. They come with new kit and bikes. If you dont have them plastic tyre levers do a similar job.

I use this video every time. And every time, it's like I have brand new brakes installed! This is a very non-intuitive process... but if it was, you wouldn't need this video. Just follow these steps and you'll be stopping like a pro!
does this way of bleeding work for the juicy 3 brakes i work in a cycle shop and a lot of the cycles come with these brakes and no disrespect to avid but the bleeding manual that comes with the bleed kit is not very clear and every set we bleed just feel soft and dont have a good bite point??
what are the best disc brakes? what about formula & hayes. what seem to be the best and most powerful on long dowhil runs without suffering heat performance issues
@Lunarlaserranging HopeGB - bar none avid's are far too spongy for my liking, hope are completely solid. If you can't get hope where you are shimano ones when set up right can be pretty decent.
Can anyone tell me why the Avid bleeding manual tells you to go in the order of: hose, caliper, lever, while this video tells you to go caliper, hose, lever?
Not sure why it says that, you sure you looking at the right one? The idea of bleeding is to chase the air of out the system. Seeing as air is lighter it makes more sense to go from the caliper then up. So just do what he shows in the video.
Pity avid don't put a link in the manual to here, it'll explain it so much better than their manual. You can actually do this just by going to your local store and buying 2 syringes with about a 2-3mm nozzle for around 38p each, and as they're plastic they can self tap into the bleed screw threads. Saves you the £££ buying the proper avid kit.
im buying a pair (front and rear) juicy 7 or juicy carbon tomorrow do they come set up and you just install em or do you av to bleed em im buying from evans cycles btw
Hey. I have the same brakes and when my front wheel was off I was pumping the brakes like an idiot. Now the pads are too close to get the wheel and disk back in. Does anyone know how to solve this?
Not a cool thing to do my friend, but no problem. Best thing to do, (if still possible, remove the pads, grip one of the pad tabs at a time with some manly pliersmove the pad to the centre of the caliper & pull out, do the same for the other. Now using a flat strong tool, (handle of a dining knife is great), put it through the caliper and push the piston back in, you may notice the other piston coming out, just keep pushing them back til they're both central. Install pads, job done!
Thanks petera, but now i have another problem. I managed to get the wheel back on by opening the bleeder valve on the caliper and wiggling the pads open just enough to slide the disk back in. The problem is that a couple drops of fluid came out in the process and now I can squeeze the brake lever all the way down without any braking action. Also the pads are rubbing against the disk.
Okay. There a several things they tell you to do in this video that is not in the bleeding manual. I'm going to try it this way and hopefully it will work. What can cause the lever to pull all the way to the handle bars when the bike is on its back tire, hence it giving you no stopping power when you are doing an extended manual. And if I slowly pull on the brakes, the lever will go to the handle bars. I am using the juicy threes. Im so frustrated with bleeding the brakes over an over. Thanks.
@ishyid Air in the system is what wheeling the bike on the bike wheel shows itself as- i had this problem till i bled them, its air up in the lever reservoir, when you turn the bike upright air can get in the piston and gets pushed in to the brake line and hence your lever goes awol.
This works perfectly, brakes are like new! However I did make an arse of it the first time, sitting squeezing the syringe when bleeding the lines wondering why the 2nd syrigne wouldn't fill and the pressure was so high...turns out I had connected one syringe to the front caliper, and the other one to the back lever. What a tit.
Hi freeloader, from your description I would suggest you brake lever could be to blame or you popped the piston heads out. Lubricate the pivot points (i suggest GT85) and if like myself you have caught the lever on a rock or tree, check that the lever has a free action as it could be catching on the burred. If the brake lever has been applied while the rotor (brake disc) is not in the caliper your piston heads could have popped out. You need to have your brakes checked at your local shop.
ja watte wa ne zever is da koop nooit avid remmen want het trekt op nix als ge toch schijfremmen wilt blijf bij shimano!!!! k werk al 5 jaar met schijfremmen in een fietsenzaak en geloof mij dit is brol
I have juicy 7's and my brake lever got depressed when my bike was in my car and i didnt have my front wheel in. The pads are jammed really tight together so i cant fit my disc back in : ( Does anyone know what i should do? Any help would be greatly appreciated
Just use a screwdriver and open them up (it does take a bit of force). For next time, put a piece of cardboard in between your pads so they dont jam when your wheels are out.
i used avid juicy3 brake and here in our place bike stores and bikes shops don't have bleed kits for sale, even brake pads are always out of stocks, so i have my pads brake bonded. at first it works fine, but after many uses specially going downhill, the rotor just slide on and its very dangerous on curves.
The bleed kit wasn't hard for me to find, and the pads weren't either. The caliper rebuild kit was hard to find, did eventually find one though at wheat Ridge Cyclery
Bleeding your brakes is good if the fluid gets dirty or if the fluid is low. Gets all the air bubbles out if you do it right. You will definitely be able to tell a difference if it was necessary and if you did it right.
if u rebleed brakes, that means that u have to remove the air from instalation. when u feel your brakes squishy or how to say it... u have to rebleed it and remove air, and the results are sharper, harder and stronger braking ;)
I'm so pissed right now I had my caliper seize up on my rear brake and can't find the replacement parts anywhere. Had to order a new caliper altogether. Talking with bike shops around Denver seems that this is a common problem. Anyone else have this problem?
Exactly, WaterPoloBeast! Useless weight! And same with seats! Who needs 'em when a bare seatpost will do just fine! That's how you make a bike light! Screw carbon. Just chop the brakes and the seat and you're sittin' pretty.
Good tip! I should try that. I've been busy taking my face razor and shaving the tires to shed valuable milligrams. I also sanded off the paint. A complete waste of fat and blubber that paint was!
Plus... I took apart bottom bracket and hubs and flushed out all grease. Stupid weight. Oh, and a headset? Pointless. 100-150 humongous grams right there!
Next, I'm going to cross-drill the sprockets some more.
I keep my seat-less seatpost though cuz it's just good fun...
yeah thats some good advice. also ball bearings dont do shit. i swapped my pedals and just put plastic ones on. i don ride with tires eithers. only my deemax rims. it works great
I bled hayes stroker rydes last week, what a nightmare! Managed it in the end without a kit by setting up a resevoir with a funnel, more like a motorcycle bleed, would be was easier that way.
Brakes are not to 'screwed' with. If you have some sort of hyrdo system please let a bike shop handle them. This type of equipment really needs an experienced mechanic.
If you want to do this type of work yourself - visit a bike shop and ask them to walk you through it.
i have kinda the same set up but mine are juicy 3 and im wounder if i need a kit for mine im thinking about getting hayes because they are way esayer to bleed
avid needs to rethink there design, and take a look at the hayes setup. One it is way easier to bleed hayes brakes, two you flush the entire system when doing so, and you dont need a kit. Avid you need a entire kit to bleed the system, and you bleed from the line that feeds into the hose instead of the caliper. This causes old fluid to remain in the caliper. I'm going to sell these avid brakes on ebay and just stick with hayes besides hayes has been making brakes for years they got it down!
Im trying to do my own brakes right now and ive watched this vid and the other vid on bleeding. Both are not descriptive enough. When ive done what they said with tieing off the lever ive had fluid come out of my lever and blown the caliper syringe off twice. So frustrating. Not simple to do at all. The AVID instruction sheet says to do the lever tie off later, not at the start. Wish this was easier than this
dont even worry about the lever just attach the bottom syringe push out the old fluid with the new fluid making sure you have the catch bottle attached at the top. and quickly reconnect the fittings to close off the system from air. clean everything well and install the wheel and make sure brakes work
I had this problem too. I found that you need to rubber band the lever after both syringes are attached, and the lever syringe is closed, while the caliper syringe is open. remove the rubber band when the caliper is finished being bled. its a pain sometimes....
You have to be crazy. I have Hayes Mags on my bike and just replaced them with Avid Elixirs. I never knew how good brake technology has gotten till I installed the set. This is even considering the '07 XT hydros i have on my other bike. Maybe the bleed system is a bit complicated but chances are you'll only have to do it once. Just my opinion but Hayes bleed system sucks as well. All companies really need to adopt an automotive style bleed system.
Is this pretty much the same thing to do for Juicy 3's? my lever doesn't have the lil red wheel pad contact adjustment. all help is highly appreciated!
Clear instruction, what more is expected? Word of warning, if you have to service the caliper in addition to bleeding and your pistons are stuck, they are a biyatch to get out. I had to use a combo of compressed air, gentle heat, anti sieze and engineering quality grips to get em out! Goggles are a no brainer if you want to see the next trail!
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
wtf all dat 2 bleed da brakes on my hayes nines i just do dat but fuck da saringes n dat if ders bubbles all it is is dat u pull harder dan usuall on da lever...
Yes, great video, however, note, 3 manufacturers tools required, 3 seconds to get the grub screw back in before fluid leaks over the floor, dont drop the screw, having bled the caliper follow same procedure for brake lever, dont drop the screw, no indication of time though imagine 10 minutes per side, pads, spreader, ever tried to get the caliper piston out to see whats behind, another manufacturers tool, wont tell you whats behind, just make sure your wearing those goggles.
This summer I bought (used)a Specialized Enduro Elite (2005) with Jucy 5.The rear brake lever went to the bottom. The nut between hose and rear caliber was dirty of dot liquid because the rear shox movement unscrawed the nut connector (between hose and caliper). So I screwed thise nut.I bled the breke (I taught with this GREAT video!).Now it is "super solid very nice".Thank you Avid
thanks on35shot2k but ive sorted the problem today...when i screwed the barb in the end of the hose it completely mangled the liner blocking the hose!!! so cut some off the liner and refitted everything and its just like a new 1 :)
yeah, um.. take some dot 3 or 4 brake fluid apply to a patch of skin and or a drop or two into your eye, then after a few minutes you can tell us yourself how serious he is.. O_o
Ive just got some juicy 5's fitted and bled the rear brake with no problems but having a nightmare with the front!!! when i try to bleed the caliper the shringe wont push in no matter how much pressure i apply!!! anyone else had this problem and how did you sort it?
have you released the clamp xD i know sounds stupid but i did that hehe...if not they might be some kind of blockage...and i think you need to also release the clamp from the lever when your bleeding the hose since you need to push the fluid from the caliper to the lever...oww yeah make sure you release the lever hehe :D
yah it is the same thing but when you do it for the 5's just put a screw driver into the caliber and push the pistons all the way out. i have 5's too however i don't like them. this video will teach how to do it.

You need to have your brakes checked at your local shop.

dont even worry about the lever just attach the bottom syringe push out the old fluid with the new fluid making sure you have the catch bottle attached at the top. and quickly reconnect the fittings to close off the system from air. clean everything well and install the wheel and make sure brakes work
jmderyke 2 years ago

Do these instructions apply to the Avid Elixir Cr's?
peisen 3 years ago
Yeah, the Elixirs are pretty much the same as the Juicys.

Alright so this might be a dumb question but this is for when there is already liquid in the hoses right? or does it even make any difference?
TylerSango 3 years ago
Yes, the fluid is already in the hoses. Even if it weren't though it would still be done this way. Not a stupid question.

This method also works with Code. It truly is awesome, easy and clean. Love my stoppers, incredible power. Thanks Avid.

MORAMAX 3 years ago
thanks on35shot2k but ive sorted the problem today...when i screwed the barb in the end of the hose it completely mangled the liner blocking the hose!!! so cut some off the liner and refitted everything and its just like a new 1 :)

safety gear for bleeding brakes?? is he serious?
sloopsapkokstokhok 3 years ago
yeah, um.. take some dot 3 or 4 brake fluid apply to a patch of skin and or a drop or two into your eye, then after a few minutes you can tell us yourself how serious he is.. O_o

Ive just got some juicy 5's fitted and bled the rear brake with no problems but having a nightmare with the front!!! when i try to bleed the caliper the shringe wont push in no matter how much pressure i apply!!! anyone else had this problem and how did you sort it?
phantomFENTON 3 years ago
have you released the clamp xD i know sounds stupid but i did that hehe...if not they might be some kind of blockage...and i think you need to also release the clamp from the lever when your bleeding the hose since you need to push the fluid from the caliper to the lever...oww yeah make sure you release the lever hehe :D

KHSrider12 3 years ago
yah it is the same thing but when you do it for the 5's just put a screw driver into the caliber and push the pistons all the way out. i have 5's too however i don't like them. this video will teach how to do it.
