  • @LadyKatXI no it's not kate D:

  • War is fought on both sides... it's a game of death where every one loses. America, Japan, Germany, Canada, UK, Italy all commit war crimes... it's war, The innocent pay the price of the few who make the decisions. The movie never says the bombers are American, British, or anything all they ever say is "Airships" nor do they ever say "Death to America" all the characters are just trying to live as normal a life as they can during war.

  • They both didn't care about the war they just wanted to live happily as a family.

  • This movie is not about america or japan! This is about Love and try to survive, well at least for me..

  • THIS MOVIE IS RETARDED. all it does is say america is evil. you only like this movie because you hate americans. japan started all this when they were killing and raping koreans and the chinese during ww2. don't believe me look it up on google. japanese people are assholes and they still don't apologize for the pearl harbor or the massacre of the chinese and koreans

  • @bigman1171

if you think the movie is retarded and hate Japan so much then why are you watching this?

try watching a video that you actually like -_-

  • @bigman1171 your fucked up you dumbass, this movie is too show the horrors of war and how it effects these children, It Isnt to say that America is evil you homo. Many Americans enjoy this movie so piss off

  • Fuck, I can't even watch more than 15 seconds in before I start getting depressed and teary eyed just from the memories of this movie. This is the only movie that's ever been able to make me feel genuinely sick from the sadness.

  • @usernaames i feel u. its actually happeningg to me right now.. the sadness

  • OMG i cried every time when i saw the little sister made the 'food' for her brother even she was dying

Can the people call the war watch this film and reflect the damages brought? not only physical damage, but also love.

  • All wars are civil wars because all Man are brothers. - Some Sage Long Ago

  • if there was no bad ,wat would the good be doing?! this is sad but it teaches us how to become human. I know u guys mite not think i m making any sense but we learn sth very important frm this

  • Soooo saaaaaad

  • God damnit, who brought the onions to work today?

  • Putain... :'(

  • if you didnt cry during this movie, you have no heart

  • I dont believe in evil i believe in bad decisions, parents make bad decisions, their child makes bad decisions and becomes a rapist for example. The child did so by example. In this fashion a government can make bad decisions, the unknowing citizens, advertise these bad ideas as good to their children, the children become soldiers who barely know what their fighting for but that they are fighting for their country. Their children are left alone when they die, forced to steal Bad decisions breed.

  • Oh, Jesus. This scene makes me cry.

  • O god, please... let the masks be upon us.

  • i name my cat Setsuko after this

  • I saw the movie and did think it was sad, but at the end it sounds like he's getting on to her for eating dirt.

  • @SupHapCak i think he's just horrified by the state that she's in :(

  • @SupHapCak Maybe he is, I mean he put so much into keeping her alive and she was eating rocks and crap.

  • Now I'm unsure which anime is better, this masterpiece or Akira?

  • @Raidmasterprod

Depends on what you mean by better. Akira is obviously better in terms of animation quality, possibly THE best non-computer animated movie. (The DVD version of Akira is crap compared to the Blu-Ray version btw, can't make out half of the colors in the DVD ver.)

This one is better emotionally. Attention to details in Setsuko's movements and such is fantastic. Personally I think this is one of the best movies ever made.

  • :(

  • This is Africa now. Imagine all those children dying of starvation everyday. I am lucky I have food and internet access. TT This is reality. Mark this day, I will be very rich and buy all children food with all my money. TT

  • @leejaedi I bought a homeless guy a coffee the other day, it was raining, i was soaked and freezing but i saw this guy sitting on the bridge and felt he needed it a lot more than me, and it felt good to be able to help him out a little, I was still thinking later and realized that there were hundreds of people like him sitting out in the rain freezing cold, needing food. Unless everyone was doing their part it wouldn't matter if I spent every cent i earned on them, it wouldn't make a difference.

  • aw shit i gona get in this anime and buy them shit lodes of rice balls

  • daamnnn im like 21 and i dont have any moister in my body because i cried gallons bro !!

  • Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!

    Stop my tears!!

  • The sad thing is this really happened to the director and his little sister and judging by the movie he wishes he was dead

  • @iceguy0077 Not the director Isao Takahata but the author of the novel Akiyuki Nosaka did indeed lose his little sister due to malnutrition.

  • @iceguy0077 did it really happen to the director? source?

  • @yashatasha This anime movie is an adaptation based on a semi-autobiographical novel by Akiyuki Nosaka which goes by the same name (Grave of the Fireflies). It is his hope that by writing the novel, he could atone for his failure to save his sister in post-WWII Japan. Of course, he's not trying to ask for his sister's forgiveness, he's asking for his own, since he cannot forgive himself for surviving while his sister died in the same manner Setsuko did.

  • 3 People have no Heart.

  • do you know how many people were killed or harmed for not believing in god? clueless fodder. ill stick to joe pecsi being my god thanks

  • Anime siblings. I have a soft for them. THIS breaks my heart ;-;

These two are my 2nd fave anime siblings.

  • and she never woke up... love the movie saita and setsuko you make us cry

  • LETS GET THIS MOVIE ENOUGH VOTES TO GO FROM 124 TO 1 ON THE IMDB TOP 250

  • waaa. everytime i watched setsuko.. i just cant control myself not to cry!!!! but i cant!!!! i cant!!!!

  • yeah this was the point i hid my face and started crying.......

  • i just cant stop crying from this scene...

  • most fav movie

  • i watched this about 15 years ago and i can still remember my feelings. i wanted to help them so much and the realization that i couldn't just killed me

  • First time a movie made me cry...

  • i cried for a good 15 mins .. its such a sad movie .. :'(

  • @Am0nknight1234

    agreed

  • sad part :(

  • OMG so lovely setsuko :'(

  • This scene makes me sad..

  • I usually cry like crazy during a sad movie, but for some reason I couldn't cry in this one. Maybe it's because it was dubbed, but I really didn't find it that great of a movie. Not sure why, I thought this would be really fantastic, but it let me down.

  • @Jerry44440

The dub is horrible compared to the original. Can't think of any case where the dub is actually better than the original, so the best advice is to avoid them and stick to subtitles regardless of what language you speak. :)

  • im sorry but i've been cryin for almost 2 days straight.. I wanna create a time machine to travel to their time and flippin help them!!!!!

  • I never really understood how she starved to death in such a short time. They didn't have the best food, but from that one scene with the boys who checked the place out, they had plenty of food. Buck wheat, frogs, fish, onions, and the veggies they stole.

    still really sad though

  • @cicada300 She was infected with diarrhea. A lot of people in unfortunate circumstances die this way, especially children.

  • @shinjite06

you don't really get "infected" with diarrhea, it's a symptom. In this case it would most likely be due to malnutrition and tainted food/water.

  • T-T

  • This movie shows why war is the worst man-made invention ever.

  • I cried so hard during this movie. My sister died nine years ago and this movie reminded me of that time. She didn't die of starvation, but she slowly widdled away because of an illness. Watching something similar happen to Setsuko brought back the feelings of what it's like. This is such a beautiful film.

    R.I.P. Janelle < 3

  • @DjSlightlyGrim Ohh, no, I'm so sorry =[

  • @DjSlightlyGrim IM SORRY

  • @DjSlightlyGrim I totally see wath you mean. They captured the nature of a 3 year old so perfectly in this movie. Setsuko reminds me of the child i babysit. that made this scene so real to me.

  • @DjSlightlyGrim God Bless your sister

  • @DjSlightlyGrim lol faggot

  • @tkoizumi i agree with you about the balance you were talking about but please don't criticize the Christians since not all Christians think they are good, i'm sure most of them think they are bad and that's why they pray and believe in God

  • @shljae Agree, but there are some Christians branches that give the rest of us a very bad image, anyway, As U said before, we christians pray to God in order to make us good coz we aren't, we are just sinners like everyone else, that's why we pray not only for ourselves but also for all humankind

  • a la fin du film je pleurais comme une vrai folle meme le film terminer je continuais .....vraiment triste ce film...

  • I love this movie. I went to Japan in 2004 and found the people there very polite and friendly ( I am from Australia). I think this film is one of the most beautiful films that I have ever seen. And to the people of Japan, my heart goes out to you all in this hard time that you are all enduring. I wish I was there now helping you. God bless you all.

  • I remember watching this for the first time hoping for a happy ending regardless of the opening scene.

    ;-;

  • the voice actor is devastatingly, how they inspired a child to speak so softly....

  • @tiemedown

Yeah it's amazing. I think about 5 years old girl did the voice act then.

  • its in japanese but still VERY SAD

  • @rupertmyprince how does the fact that its in japanese diminish its emotional impact?

  • @pleasedontask it donst im just saying tht its a different laungage but still as sad as the english

  • Greave of fireflies should be shown on the big screen in front of all world leaders and milltary personal in the UN.

  • ;-;

  • this movie successfuly made me cry like hell for the whole day. i remembered havnt cried like that for years! it's sooo depressing that setsuko died. i was like "no~ no~ u cnt do that mr.director~!!! plsssssss~~~~~~!!!!" and yeah, cried like hell.

how depressed it can be for struggling so hard just to live, yet it failed. this is just our view as the one who watched this movie. imagined, thousands out there who actually experience this.

  • i love how america thought this was so sad they actually used the subtitles instead of making up their own words

  • great movie...

  • My mom said she didn't like anime. I was watching this movie, she came down and sat beside me, and watched the whole thing with me. And both of us were crying. Great movie.

  • @thefuzzbuzzmuzzcuzz I made my mom watch it (:D) And she doesn't like anime either. Yet she bawled her eyes out. It's hard not to, this movie is fantastic.

  • Saddess part :( its so good, but makes me cry

  • This part always makes me sob. :((

It makes me cry even more to know that things like this is still happening today..

  • This movie destroys me,i cant bare to see it again,so powerful,so heartbreaking..i just cant bare seeing the kids suffer so badly...war is evil and cruel, how people can start them, fight them....i just cant understand..The most powerful film iv ever seen. The most heartbreaking.

  • Why did the man cry D;?

  • @Chokolade2630 Because his little sister was all he had and she was gravely ill. She was delirious. I think you'd cry if your little sister was delirious.

    and his parents are dead.

  • The BBC pepole who scorned Japanese Hibakusha SHOULD see this film 10,000 times!!!

  • I don't understand how a few folks on here have made some very rude comments about this movie. I think this movie touches more on the so called "collateral damage" everyone says it so easily during "any" war. Some of these so called collateral damages take years to come to fruition. So please try to somewhat respectable. Thanks.

  • wait wasnt this the emperor's fault for not giving up when trumen warned him?

  • I just watched this a few hours ago. I honestly tried to hold back my tears, but at the end I just cried so hard.

    Absolutely stunning movie. Very heartbreaking.

  • the movie is based on a true story, except the older borther that dies in the movie actually grows up in real life and is the man whole made this movie. he lost everyone, most notably his little sibling, in WWII.

  • lmfaoooooooo

  • i dont get it

  • @gomets92 the little girl is dying

  • all innocent people suffered...

  • @IsItOnTab what's funny fag?

  • @IsItOnTab Have you seen the movie? If you had, unless you were the most cruel, cynical, indifferent, unemotional person in the world you would not be saying that!

  • I want to donate for an anti-war effort, where can I receive information and who can I ask about how to do that?.. I searched the net and there is not much about it but I'll search more.. War Child looks promising but can people from abroad donate too (I'm in The Netherlands)?

  • oh I found a dutch War Child version so it's all good :)

  • It is universal theme you know... children suffering from war

  • This is the problem with Christian society. They are thought either they are good or evil and embrace the good with fullest and avoid the evil. That works in some extent but very shallow. Us Japanese are taught not only to embrace the good but also the evil. There is a balance in everything no matter how chaotic. In a real world, there are no such thing as good or bad people. Not ever!

  • @tkoizumi

Not only Christians do this; Muslims too. And not all Christians do. You sound mighty preachy by saying that Japan embraces both good and evil. Pretty weird considering this is based in Japan and no one's doing anything, eh?

  • @tkoizumi I dont think you quite understand Christian society, or more so Christianity. That is not what is taught. *shrug*

  • @tkoizumi This is the last place for thoughtful theological conversation to take place, but that isn't what Christianity teaches. Good is emphasized so much for Christians in order for us to learn to hope for it in ourselves and in our society. In my experience, I've learned to embrace badness as well for the good that will rise up because of it, though I will never embrace evil or cruelty. True Christianity does't label people on goodness because we are judged only by God's infinite Knowing.

  • @tkoizumi im a christian and thats what i was taught to believe in too. we embrace love and peace but we're not freakin delusional hippies.

  • @tkoizumi No, that's not the problem. Did you and I actually see the same film? It doesn't matter what set of beliefs you follow. You may be a Christian, a Muslim, a Shintoist, a Mormon or a Scientologist, it doesn't matter - war just destroys. There is no logical explanation for the deaths of fathers, mothers, brothers, sisters and friends. No poet can express the suffering. No religion can explain why these two had to lose their parents and die. No 'loving' god can justify their suffering.

  • @Am0nknight1234 typical doesnt want to accept the dark side of life strugling forever against them selfs.Afraid of something inevitable.war is sad,war justyfies deaths, lifes justyf

  • @MyDenis0 What are you trying to say here? Can you please try to make your point more clearer to me. I'm not trying to condescend or patronise you. I only want to be certain of the message you're trying to convey so that I can respond to that properly.

Once again, I do not want to give you the impression that I'm belittling you.

  • @Am0nknight1234 no youre right i wrote very confusing and miss spelled alot like now i think.(im not english). But the point is that you dont want to justify war.You dont want to understand war like you do with love you dont want to understand the other side of human nature you dont want to find an explenation beacuse you cant accept death and so you dramatize and make a hypocrite of youreself.Like tkoizumi wrote life has good and bad things and faster you accept it the better youl be.

  • @Am0nknight1234 damn straight.

  • @tkoizumi how do you do that exactly? I want to embrace both as well!

  • @tkoizumi I realize what you are saying, and I agree, but I do not agree with how you call out chirstian society. I am a chirstian, and I may not be a typical christian, but I can realize that evil is in the world and that it will not go away. All Chrisitans realize this, and we also realize that there is evil in everyone :/

  • @LuckyPalms You're blind to the fact that there is no perfect solution. There is no system that will rid the world of its ills. Life is a constant series of situations whereby you try your hardest to be objective and make good decisions, but you cannot avoid making bad ones. There is no such thing as evil, there are reasons behind everything, it doesn't justify anything but it explains it.

  • @tkoizumi Anyone with a half decent education is advised that things are relative/contextual/many shades of grey. That is not unique to Japan.

  • @tkoizumi I wish you wouldn't generealize. I know many Japanese who say the complete opposite. I bid you good day now.

  • And this happens in Africa EVERY minute :(

  • @chuk90 Goddamn. Just...goddamn.

  • @chuk90 this hapends in esten europe every fuking day .. sad, it's sad what money make to this world .. sad, wish that one day the rest will weekup and understand .. that ... we are all .. one pice !

  • @TheXkaddict

    >this hapends in esten europe every fuking day

    >Bullshit

    >What are you ? an American ignorant ?

  • @TheChopeur i live in esten europe ..

  • oh my god, and JUST when he got enough food for her ;[

  • I had no words to say when the child passed on... only the tears fell around me

  • Think I was nearly "there" throughout most of the movie...but my "peak" moment came at the end, or near the end, when the girl says "come back soon and play..."

Everything just came together in that few seconds of speech :(

  • @Rotiart135 Racist pig.

  • @homeoe78

I think he is not racist

    just normal Korean

  • @sijotakane Im Korean.....

  • wow

  • the scene when setsuko after following all the way to the police station searching her brother and asks seita , "should i get a doctor for u seita" despite her being sick ...really blowed my tear tanks apart, started cryin thereafter profusely.....my peak scene

  • I cried my eyes out on this scene.

I also cried at the part were she is digging the grave for the dead fireflies, and talking about her dead mother.

  • its sad to think anime movies can so good, but all anyone in the states know of is nuruto

  • What is a "peakest scene"?

  • USA kills more people than Hitler did

and when you ask an American why you did that?

    they will answer

    "Freedom"

  • AWWWW now i feel like crying!

  • This movie makes me sad(TΑT)

  • I havent seen this movie for month and it still has a BIG effect on me.

  • @YOUSCREWBER: THAT WAS A ROCK... SEITA HAD TAHT REACTION BECAUSE HE SAW HOW HUNGRY HER SISTER IS BUT STILL SHE THINKS OF HER BROTHER... THIS PART MADE ME TEARED UP... SEITA WENT OUT TO GET SOME RICE TO FEED HER SISTER AND WHEN HE COMES BACK SETSUKO IS NO WHERE TO BE FOUND. HE SOON FOUND SETSUKO LYING ON THE GRASS NOT FAR FROM THEIR CAVE HALF DEAD.

  • I just can't watch this movie . U know actually I feel scared when I watch this. I am very scared of watching this movie because it is just soo depressing, dark, sad.

  • @MrVogelz And that's why it's a wonderful movie. It takes you on an emotional roller coaster leaving you sobbing uncontrollably by the end. It's quite an amazing feeling, the sadness this movie produces, it's unimaginably deep!

  • I totally bawled when she passed on.

  • wow im sorry im gonna get ridiculed for this but this movie isnt sad at all for me. schindlers list is a true sad movie (feel free to respond)

  • @lilguy1171 who?

  • @L0v3Namine you never heard of schindlers list?

  • @lilguy1171 Um.. no I dnt think so :\ what is it?

  • @L0v3Namine its a movie by steven speilberg and its about the holocaust and that movie almost made me cry. trust that movie is like 2x sadder than this. of course thats not to say that this movie sux which doesn't

  • @lilguy1171 oh haha i guess ill watch it sometime then :P

  • @lilguy1171 There was a lot of creative flexibility in Schindler's List. This movie was based on true events based on the author's life.

  • @nrXic Schindler's List was also based on a real-life person, too.

  • @lilguy1171

schidlers list is a feel good movie. I feel really good watching it

  • I remeber when I watched it first time. I couldn't stop crying twenty minutes after film ended. I've seen this film like three times and every time I cried so hard.

  • War creates many stories. Peace only creates one story.

  • I was so on tears at this part...

  • OMG!This is sooo sad..=(

    I cried so long..>.<
