I am a VW freak. But I can seem to warm up to this work. I been trying for years. It sounds to me to be too over the top. Almost Hollywood or what Hollywood would become.
I wish I did like it, but I far prefer the other 8 symphonies.
The 22 May performance was my 3rd live Sea Symph in a month and the best. Well done the Phil and Mr Hickox! Am attending the complete symphony cycle and all have been excellent so far, but, to crown it all "Pilgrim" was one of my greatest musical experiences - wonderfully sung and played - it felt that the performers themselves knew that they were doing something special, especially Rod. Williams, who was positively transcendental!
This is an absolutely mesmerising work... I sang it recently in Portugal, as a soloist, and it was such a delight. The fine music and its' textures and the collection of poems by Whitman come together in such a sublime piece. My favourites are movement 2, On the Beach at Night Alone, and the end of movement 4, The Explorers (O My Brave Soul). "O daring joy, but safe! Are they not all the seas of God?" was the passage that truly "made my day" in every concert. :) Toi-toi for May!
Brilliant commentary!

Good commentary. Met this guy recently, really nice although I found he isn't very easy to talk to! Brilliant musician though!

Unfortunately the comentator forgot to mention the orchestral works by Heitor Villa-Lobos which have an excepcional quality.

Fabulous video. I think the sea holds a special fascination for an island nation.
