While both ladies have great voices, let's face it; Diana Ross is the more international singer. Her fan base is just larger the world over. I do think Franklin, once had a better voice, but now, I would have to give the props to Ross. She has a far better voice than Franklin does now. Both ladies successes are legendary, and their places in history is secure.
Both these ladies are wonderful singers. However, they are different singers style wise. I think Diana has sold more records world wide. He has received more international awards. Her songs have remained on the charts for longer periods of time. Bilboard Magazine named her Entertainer of the Century, and Guiness World Book, name her the Most Successful Entertain of the 20th Century. So, I would have to give the nod to Diana Ross.
Oh, I don't know ! ... Which is better, the terrible photos of Diana Ross, taken among other places at Heathrow Airport when she was arrested. OR . The terrible photos of Barbara Streisand taken with her hair awful and her scowling in the afternoon sun. (see google photo.) . Probably Miss. Diana. . Cheers. from, del-boy.
I perfer Diana . taking nothing from Aretha..fas as I am concerned they are Two Different Queens in their own right. and agree neither should be pitted against each other because they are both great...I wonder why Blacks always Pit Blacks against each other. I never hear Madonna against Cher, or Barbra Stresiand against Liza Minelli..but Diana against Aretha or Patti against DIana..why cant we just LOVE them all. but only the blacks..I know the truth hurts. It is what it is.
@rufus317 I'd still go with Diana simply because before her, no black woman crossed over and went neck and neck with the Beatles week after week during the entire 60s decade.
This comparison is ridiculous! It's like comparing apples and oranges. Both are my favorite 2 female singers of all time! Just listen to the great music both have contributed to the game. One point of reference however...."The Son Of a Preacher Man" is being sung by Dusty Springfield here. This is NOT Aretha's version.
Aretha, you cant even compare them, Diana is good as well but they have different styles, Aretha is the queen of soul, and Diana is the 2nd Motown queen, because Mary Wells will always have the title of Motown's first queen
@Calvin375 diana, still sounds pretty good live, Aretha doesn't . Aretha sounds like she has a pork chop in her mouth and is signing between bites when she sings.
@whatigot2say Aretha sounds great live, i have seen countless videos of her live in concert. She doesn't sound as great as she use to that is true, but she is still as the great singer she was when she was a young woman.
I hate this kind of crap. Both of these women created some of the best R&B and Pop records of the last century. Long after they are gone people will still be singing "Respect" and "Ain't No Mountain Hight Enough". Let's just pray for a fast and speedy recovery for Ms. Franklin - we love her.
Get serious! How can anyone who understand soul put these two singers into the same catagory? You can't feel it can you? That's why you ask that question.
At this present time, I just want to see Aretha beat the cancer, and I'm sure Diana Ross, will be thinking the same. Stay strong Aretha, and thanks for your wonderful contribution to the world of Music.
This is silly. What are we supposed to be voting for? their is no similarity between these 2 great performers except that they both grew up as friends together and they both created something that didn't exist before they're own styles. both successfully created a model that has been copied by numerous female performers for almost 50 rs. both are great at being original.
This is crazy! Aretha is Areta and Diana is Diana you cannot compare the two,They offer some thing so diffrent they are both great, they never competed for the same spot light.
@darkebony & they've been friends since they were young teenagers living in the same neighborhood. & they're still friends . Arethat has big respect for Diana and Diana feels the same about her.
Diana is like a flute and Aretha is like a tuba. Each unique and offers their own interpretation and style of music. Musically I would not compare them just like I would not compare these two instruments. They both excel at what they do.
I just saw Miss Ross and Queen Ree back to back in Canada last month. I will not speak poorly about Queen Ree, but there were streams of peeps leaving for over the last 30 minutes of her show. Everyone said she looked awful and sounded awful (and she did) but I bow to The Queen... That being said, Miss Ross has it all over Aretha and tore the place apart both nights - selling out twice to Ree's 80% one night at lower prices.
@supremester2 That is a damn lie, first of all Aretha was on a break from the road. It is funny how people can lie, Aretha shows are always amazing. If there is one thing you don't have to worry about with Aretha is her singing, she will give you your moneys worth. You really didn't have to lie and lie badly! Ross doesn't have a thing on Aretha. Aretha is better than her in everyway. You are full of shit. Everytime Aretha does a concert her shows alway sellout!
@TheQueenAretha A) I'm not comparing the two. Aretha is The Queen, but Miss Ross IS Supreme. B) You can verify that Aretha played Casino Rama in Sept by calling them. You can verify attendance by checking Box Score in Billboard. C) Aretha cancelled all her gigs for 6 months shortly after I posted here becauase she is in bad shape. You don't need to call peeps liars when you can have proof. I loved Ree - All I need is Think and Chain Of Fools and I'm happy. Miss Ross? Def my fave by long shot.
@TheQueenAretha I hope that's the case - I hope they are not just saying its her ribs. She really didn't look well at all - like there was no fight left in her. It's true that I totally dig Diana Ross way beyond anyone else, but that doesn't diminish my love and respect for Aretha. It saddened me to see her looking and sounding so bad. She apologized for her voice, but I didn't care. She's Aretha and I don't expect her to be where she was 40 years ago. She did "Beyond The Sea" and it was great.
I just saw Miss Ross and Queen Ree back to back in Canada last month. I will not speak poorly about Queen Ree, but there were streams of peeps leaving for over the last 30 minutes of her show. Everyone said she looked awful and sounded awful (and she did) but I bow to The Queen....give me Chain Of Fools, Think and Don't Play That Song and I'm done! That being said, Miss Ross has it all over Aretha and tore the place apart both nights - selling out twice to Ree's 80% one night at lower prices.
@ladylove326 Nope. I'm not into tearing down Divas to support my fave. I'd go to see Aretha again, but she was in very bad shape that night. Yesterday it was announced that she had surgery - it had nothing to do with her ribs like TheQueenAretha said. She is in the heart wing of the hospital, which, considering her size, isn't surprising. I hope she will be OK, but she looked real bad in Sept - I felt very bad for her, plus, so many people leaving the show was shocking.
They are both great successful vocalist far better than what we have in the music industry these days. Diana has always been groomed to be a crossover artist more pop/soul. Aretha strictly gospel/soul/R&B and has had crossover success. Both artist grew up in the church with gospel music in their genes. Berry Gordy groomed Diana to sound more pop whereas Aretha's roots of gospel made her the queen of soul and diana the princess of pop...both are the best with s great repetoire of songs.
I am a songwriter, but I guess I will let you guys judge this one. Many will love Aretha and Patti as great vocalists, particularly if soulful "verbal contortionists" are what they enjoy in style. On the other hand, Diana might be considered by many to be better than both in natural voice tone (especially in her early years) and as an audience entertainer. It's all good !
Well, again without stating a definite opinion on this, we would also have to consider the voices of the music-buying public as well as our own voice. As I read the report - with no emotions of mine here involved - I have noted that Diana's God-given gifts have proven most successful. So I'm simply stating that Di must also, indeed, have some weaponry that other singers lack. Results make a statement for her that none of us can ignore.
@seereeuss If that is so than why has Aretha sold more albums. Success does not make you a better singer, there is so many reasons why Aretha is a better singer and they are not at all superficial. Aretha is in a league of superior singers.
@TheQueenAretha Actually, I have not stated that EITHER is better than the other. I simply responded to YOUR statement that one is. According to record, Di reigned as queen over ALL other artists - pop and soul - with a Number One hit close to ten times. And Rea only did that once. So my point is only this: We must all admit that Di HAS had many moments when, in action, she proved 2B THEsuperior1. And no one should discredit her simply because she brings a rainbow of qualities to the table.
@seereeuss That record is wrong. The records show that Diana has sold over 80 million albums while Aretha has sold over 100. Aretha, Diana and Barbra were the best selling female vocalist of there generation. In reality Barbra is the top selling vocalist. Now if you add Diana's hits from the Supremes she has more hits than any female on the billboard charts, but in album sells Aretha has sold more. Aretha has two on the billboard and 20 number 1s on the rnb charts.
@seereeuss Ree has more top 40 hits than any woman in music as well are more million sellling singles than any other woman for that matter. In terms of music there is no one more accomplished that Aretha Franklin. She is superior in everyway.
@TheQueenAretha None of the records I cited are incorrect. In direct competition for superiority, Di has close to ten times bested ALL artist - including Rea - with some Number One pop hit or another, as I stated. And often, she has even taken vacations in the way of Michael Jackson with no need to even appear with records to sell. On the other hand, you have'nt made me forget that I'm a fan of Rea as well !! Between the two, the best live vocalizations I've seen came from her.
@dhunts11 Pardon me, YouTube!! The above-written comment was forwarded by myself - the one and only SEEREEUSS. In protection of my privacy, this name to the left should not even be here.
They are the two greatest R&B singers of our time. Totally different from each other and both pure originals. Why compare? Music today would be the poorer if either one had not sung for us.
I hate when some find they have to "pit" great, talented singers against each other. Miss Ross and Miss Franklin are BOTH fabulous singers / entertainers . . . . nuff said.
Listen I think Aretha has a REMARKABLE voice BUT WITHOUT DIANA WORKING her tail off on every TV show and recorded like what 2 or 3 album it would have been alot harder foir many. MANY OTHERS would not be. THAT NOT TO SAY DIANA WAS THE FIRST But how many of you know there names. AND duplication of voice WHO!!!!!COME ON NOW as a good friend of hers MJ used to say!!!!!Listen Aretha has an amazing voice but so DOES DIANA and that's JUST THE WAY IT IS!!!
Of course Diana worked very hard but so did Aretha and so did any woman before them that made it possible for either oboth of them to be on tv. I know of the names of the woman that came before Aretha and Diana, Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughan, Billie Holiday, Mahalia Jackson to name a few.
I say Aretha. Diana is great, awesome performer, great presence. But Aretha, her voice can't be reproduced. The raspyness, the tone. How she can belt it out. That's singing and only a few people can do it. Her voice is 1 in a Million like Tina, Patti, Whitney, 2 name a few. You can't immitate them. But you can immitate Diana.
@dreaminofme07 Diana Ross has often been imitated...but has never been duplicated!! Her's is the voice that is like no other, all those singers (except Tina) are comparable to Aretha, that church type hollerin'; Diana was and is the only original in the bunch, she conveyed emotional character without screaming thru a song, you actually hear the words.... wow what a concept. And her glamour...Aretha herself has attemped to capture that Diana stage aura, but unfortunately she cant, NO ONE can!
You are wrong. They don't come close to Aretha. Diana is not an original. There were black singers singing in the same style as she was. No one was like Aretha. She is more than just a gospel, she is music's number interpreter. Aretha doesn't scream, she sings and she convey more emotion and feeling than Diana ever did. No one can make you feel the way Aretha makes you feel. No one expresses themselves better. Diana is a great singer but you are going to need more than Glam to next to Aretha.
@reyrey031068 your concept on what a real singing voice is what I call mistaken, but in America everyone is entitled to their own opinion.... But see if you want 2 throw some facts out there(since this is where this is leading), Ms. Aretha has Ms. Diana beat hands down in, " Record sales, Single sales, # of times an album or single has gone platinum, Amount each receives in loyalties, etc..." Not everyone was able to cross over as Diana did. Which is y ur so hooked I see lmao! U keep her hunny!
@dreaminofme07 I'm not sure what you're referring to as my "concept" of real singing or a "real voice" since i never talked about that, but..... You seem to be just another silly queen who thinks just because Aretha can scream her head off(or at least she used to)that makes her the best of all time! It doesnt! I love Aretha as a singer, but that really is all she is.. Diana Ross has accomplished waaaay more in her career, films,(oscar nom for Lady Sings the Blues). tv, Broadway(Tony Award)cont.
@reyrey031068 And of course music! And it was Diana whoBillboard mag named as Artist of the Century! Not Rere... Miss Ross was also named as the most sucessful female entertainer in history at one point so..My preference is Diana's voice, but that is just my opinion. but you cant argue with facts....
@reyrey031068 Aretha from 1967 to 1971 was the top selling female artist by Billboard Mag. Not Diana Ross.Diana is not the most successful entertainer in history. Ree has sold more than her and Barbra Streisand is the top selling female singer of all time. Look i don't have any bad words for Diana.
@reyrey031068 Interesting.... Ad yet still Diana's "singing" which let me remind you "you have spoke nothing of" seems 2 be a constant notation in your paragraphs since your FIRST response 2 my comment. I really don't need 2 continue this "Comment Battle" with you anymore, because the topic of this entire video is "Who is The Better Artist", meaning vocals. And for the record, Ms. Diana had to go out and do movies and whatever else, because bluntly, She DON'T sing THAT GOOD!! Now comment on that
@dreaminofme07 I feel stupid responding to an idiot such as yourself, but whatever...Diana Ross is a very, very, very successful SINGER, regardless of the fact that people like you dont like her voice or prefer aretha or patti or anyone else for that matter she has proven herself by SINGING for the last 40 yrs, and she is still headlining tours alone and SINGING!! Being a successful ARTIST does not mean being only a good singer! Its means all around ENTERTAINER!! Have a nice life psycho!
@reyrey031068 Get on thing straight, Aretha doesn't scream, she sings and she is a better singer than Diana. Though Diana is a great singer and is underrated. Aretha is the better artist. Thats all she is, Aretha is more than just a singer, she is an musician, a songwritter and an interpreter. Aretha never did any film and she didn't do a TV Special on Broadway but Aretha is way more accomplish in the field of music.
I think these competitions that fans try to set up are ridiculous...It is my understanding the Diana, Aretha, Patti, Dionne, etc are all so respectful that they have ALL STILL STANDING!!! Maybe some of you don't realize how hard it was for Black Artists to remain in the business at all....MUCH LESS FOR 4 OR 5 DECADES....They all deserve our respect and gratitude...not to be pitted against each other!!!
It like comparing apples with oranges both are great for different reason both have sold gobs of records. Aretha has the magical voice, but so does Diana and Diana was like one of the first artist male or female to cross over. So would Aretha been as successful with out D and the Supremes???
18 Grammy Awards, 45 Top 40 Pop Hits, 20 #1 R&B hits and her voice was declared a Michigan Natural Resource. Aretha Franklin all day baby! The one and only Queen of Soul.
Diana is nice but come on when it comes to pure singing and creating. Miss Ross doesn't come close to Aretha. Plus Diana's best music came when she was a member of The Supremes.
The only Motown artists that had control of their music was Stevie, Smokey and Marvin.
Aretha writes, plays piano and chooses what she wants to sing
i Love both of them personally for different reason they both have an historical iconic voice that hasn't been heard at there time but my pick would be Aretha Franklin but I also love Diana Ross
Both highly respected & successful artistes but for records sold, diversification, tours & longevity of recording career there really is no question - Diana reigns supreme. As reyrey says, Billboard named her "Female Entertainer of the 20th Century". No arguing with that. Add to the mix a Golden Globe Award & an Oscar nomination for an acting role that included a considerable amount of singing. Saying all that, I love Aretha. Her voice is incomparable. Shame they didn't duet at their heights.
Hey QueenAretha, you clearly have some kind of emotional, mental situation going on there.... We get it, you love aretha, and so do most of us, but queen, you need to get a grip, Diana Ross has had a more varied, diverse and globally sucessful career, she took more chances and created a Diva persona that no other artist has ever topped.. for Gods sake have you seen her Ceasars Palace concert, or her Central Park shows, Aretha could NEVER pull anything off like that. Now stop being silly already!
I wonder if it is you with the emotional and mental problems, i don't have a problem with Diana. Not at all. Aretha is the most respected woman in music, Diana was very successful but she was diverse as Aretha. Aretha took more chances than Diana ever did, Diana is a diva but did she innovate a genre like Aretha did, did she write, produce, play an instrument like Aretha did. Hell no! Have you hear Aretha's Amazing Grace Album or actually watched any Aretha performance. Aretha is superior.
@TheQueenAretha ...See when you say non-sensical things like Aretha is the most respected blah blah blah, it makes u seem crazy..... I'm sure you're not crazy, are you?? And I think you are trying to say Diana Ross WASN'T as diverse as ReRe, But clearly you are misguided in your thinking.. Diana Ross won a Tony award for her sold out shows on Broadway. She was nominated for the Oscar for Lady Sings...she won the Golden Globe for it, Mahogany was nominated for best song Oscar,
Female artist of the Century ..Do you get that queen,. Female Artist of the CENTURY...by Bilboard Magazine!!! She has had number one songs on the Pop, Soul, Jazz, and Disco charts, She has crossed over to the Country charts, and has had Highly sucessful TV Special..And yes i have watched many of Arethas performances, and while she can sing, people seem to be more distracted by her sometimes clownish appearance, and her inability to push away from the table..
@reyrey031068 No i am not but you are fucked out of your mind. It is not an opinion but a fact that Aretha is the most respected woman in music, she has more Grammys than anyother black woman in music and is still winning them, her voice was declared a National Treasure, is the younger person to ever recieve a Kennedy Award, Rolling Stone Mag voted her The Greatest SInger of All Time. Diana is a good singer but she is no where in level of a singer Aretha is.
It is not Aretha appearance that the people were focussed on it was her voice and the feeling she gave off. Aretha did things with her voice that DIana or no one could ever do. Unlike you i actually know more about your idol than you do minds, if you knew anything about Aretha you would know why she is still seen as one of the most respected women in music and Diana is being forgotten.
@TheQueenAretha I wont waste my time going back and forth with a crazy person,So... i will let Miss Ross' record stand for itself! And queen please take your meds!!
reyrey031068 you are one of the most dumbest human being, i have ever met. It is so clear to me that there is something off about you. All i have to say is get a damn grip. Get a life for god sakes. Diana Ross is great and no one is denying her success but Aretha is one of a kind. Aretha impact on music surpasses anything Diana ever did. Without a doubt Diana is a legend but Aretha is Legendary. All i can do is pray that you get help.
They are true DIVAS the mention of there names draw attention, but ARETHA is a trailblazer she has changed the face of popular music, and certainly R&B, Miss Ross also changed how R&B singers are perceived with her presentation, entertainment is more than talent its the audio and visual.
Both amazing singers, two different styles. Personally choice is Aretha F. as i prefer her voice and songs. But both artists deserves the respect for what they have given to the music industry.
No one said she never crossed over, she has...And i do know alot, I know she is known as the Queen of SOUL...not the Queen of Pop, or the Queen of Jazz or Gospel.. Soul! Be clear.
Yes she is the Queen of Soul but even that is an understatment when it comes to Aretha. She is music in generally. No one is as musically accomplished as she is, the only two i can think of is Ella Fitzgerald and Barbra Streisand in that light.
Lets not get crazy now.... Aretha Franklin is NOT the Queen of Music. She is considered the Queen of Soul..... She made her mark in soul music, thats not debatable, Diana Ross conquered the ENTERTAINMENT world, and has a greater list of accomplishments than Aretha, also not debateable. Love who you want but lets be real.Diana is the whole package!
Aretha has made her mark not only in soul music but in music in general. She in many ways changed the face of music. Diana is a great performer but she has by no mean accomplishment more than Aretha has. And that is a fact, Diana hasn't been successful since the 80's. Diana is great but she is not the whole package.
BOth ladies' careers have altered since the 80's. Aretha is still winning grammies! She does not sound like she used to at all though. I hate to say that but it is simply true. IMO both ladies are coasting on previous sucesses. Ross has focused mainly on her concerts which are typically sold out. Yes, Aretha has changed the face of music period.
Sure Aretha doesn't sound the way she use to but she still has an amazing voice and she can still give you the same passion she gave you when she was younger. I have no hard feeling about Diana. To me she is black glam.
although aretha is first in my book always. i think it is really silly to compare two LIVING LEGENDS. let's just celebrate them while we still have them. as you can see we are losing far too many of the greats.
Aretha is soul singer, and though she has dabbledin other genres, in my opinion she is not always sucessful, hers is a soulful distinctive voice..its not that uncommon to find lots of singers that sound like her, Chaka, Patti etc. There only one Miss Ross, she can sing anything and make you feel something, without screaming at the top of her lungs for an entire song. They are both American Treasures. and I love both, But Diana is the tops!!!
Patti and Chaka are nothing like Aretha. There isn't a singer that is like Aretha. She is one of a kind. No one has made a bigger mark on music than Aretha. There is only one Aretha Franklin. Diana is good in her own right but Aretha is better. Aretha is able to sing in any genre she want and excelled in it. Also Aretha is not a screamer, she is a singer whole has the power to belt. Most importantly she is a interpreter, she can tell you a story with her voice and have you believe. Ree is no.1
I think it is hugely unfair to pit these artists against each other, Aretha is the undisputed Queen of Soul, she has won a million Grammies and all....But. Diana Ross ushered in an era where Black female singers didnt have to have started in the church, and be all sassy and bold and mix gospel and soul. Her voice was classy and honest and sweet and crystal clear. She brought glamour and style and beauty to POP music. Aretha has given props to Diana by remaking her songs over the years
Aretha is the definition of music, Diana is amazing but she isn't no Ella Fitzgerald who i love to deatha and she didn't start in the church. Aretha voice was strong but sweet, masculine but at the sametime feminine. I will say that Diana is the epitome of Glamour and black beauty but Aretha is the queen of music as a whole.
Both excellent singers and entertainers in their own right and very different styles of singing. I am pleased with both diana and aretha's success. I can feel the emotion of both artist singing ability.
There is no doubt Aretha is the better singer. She has earned the title. "The Queen of Soul" for a reason. Aretha is the only female singer who can sing all genre's of music, Jazz, Pop, Country, R&B, Gospel, and Opera. In my opinion, Diana Ross is not a singer, just an entertainer.
Because Aretha sang Nessun Dorma at he Grammy's does not make her an opera singer. Her voice is not operetic not is her breth control and power. She loves opera but she doesn't sing it. To say Ross is not a singer is just stupid. She entertains by singing! Sheesh!
I never stated that it made her an opera singer but what i does proves my point that Aretha can sing anything. She had means of trying to be an opera singer, but she pulled it off and it was the talk of the grammys. Also i never said that Diana isn't a singer, i said she isn't a singer's singer.
I am Diana Fan and will always be. Diana's music has a more global appeal while Aretha's music is targeted at more of a specifc audience which generates a more local to national appeal. Both women are great at what they do and that is perform. Lady Di is just personal preference because she can do it all, sing, act, dance, and she speaks very well. She's a first class lady.
Aretha's more branches out worldwide. Aretha is know nationally as one of the greatest singer ever. Where the hell you get that local shit from better ask somebody.
Impossible contest. Both are phenomenal. I will say in defense of Diana's voice, I think she's unfairly criticized because she doesn't perform the vocal gymnastics of other r&b singers. I've always believed Diana is an actress who sings. There's context in her interpretation. The song is the focus. Not her voice. Amen. I once saw a t-shirt making fun of "American Idol" that read "Loud is the New Good." How unfortunate and true.
These women have enormous respect for each other and each other's talents. They have different singing styles. Celebrate both. They are both treasures!
Diana Ross is the master interpreter of fluff & cheese.
Aretha Franklin can sing the Phone book, sell a million copies, and get a Grammy nod for it.
Quite "frankly" there is no comparison, Lady Franklin is by far the greatest singer ever... with 20 Grammys to date, which include the Living Legend Grammy and the Lifetime Achievement Grammy as well as being the first female artist to be entered into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
5hit! it's like comparing caviar to Peanut butter.
aretha because is has all the grammys and diana has never won one

Both these ladies are wonderful singers. However, they are different singers style wise. I think Diana has sold more records world wide. He has received more international awards. Her songs have remained on the charts for longer periods of time. Bilboard Magazine named her Entertainer of the Century, and Guiness World Book, name her the Most Successful Entertain of the 20th Century. So, I would have to give the nod to Diana Ross.

I would have to give Diana this one simply because Diana survived "the disco era" and had hits during that era. Aretha took a slump during disco.

@rufus317 Aretha made a comeback afterwards though in both the 80's and in the late 90's.

This is silly. What are we supposed to be voting for? their is no similarity between these 2 great performers except that they both grew up as friends together and they both created something that didn't exist before they're own styles. both successfully created a model that has been copied by numerous female performers for almost 50 rs. both are great at being original.

That being said, Miss Ross has it all over Aretha and tore the place apart both nights - selling out twice to Ree's 80% one night at lower prices.
supremester2 1 year ago
@supremester2 You are nuts Diane Ross couldn't even hold Queen Aretha's jock when comes to singing! She is the Queen and Diane is just mere subject!
DetroitLives313 1 year ago
@supremester2 That is a damn lie, first of all Aretha was on a break from the road. It is funny how people can lie, Aretha shows are always amazing. If there is one thing you don't have to worry about with Aretha is her singing, she will give you your moneys worth. You really didn't have to lie and lie badly! Ross doesn't have a thing on Aretha. Aretha is better than her in everyway. You are full of shit. Everytime Aretha does a concert her shows alway sellout!
TheQueenAretha 1 year ago
@TheQueenAretha A) I'm not comparing the two. Aretha is The Queen, but Miss Ross IS Supreme. B) You can verify that Aretha played Casino Rama in Sept by calling them. You can verify attendance by checking Box Score in Billboard. C) Aretha cancelled all her gigs for 6 months shortly after I posted here becauase she is in bad shape. You don't need to call peeps liars when you can have proof. I loved Ree - All I need is Think and Chain Of Fools and I'm happy. Miss Ross? Def my fave by long shot.
supremester2 1 year ago
@supremester2 The reason Aretha canceled all her gigs is because the doctors ordered her to get some rest due to the fact of fractured ribs.
TheQueenAretha 1 year ago
@TheQueenAretha I hope that's the case - I hope they are not just saying its her ribs. She really didn't look well at all - like there was no fight left in her. It's true that I totally dig Diana Ross way beyond anyone else, but that doesn't diminish my love and respect for Aretha. It saddened me to see her looking and sounding so bad. She apologized for her voice, but I didn't care. She's Aretha and I don't expect her to be where she was 40 years ago. She did "Beyond The Sea" and it was great.

@supremester2 Aretha doesn't sound bad she is still in great shape for her age as well as her looks, she looks great.

ARETHA...no contest!!
jamesvv 1 year ago
I am a songwriter, but I guess I will let you guys judge this one. Many will love Aretha and Patti as great vocalists, particularly if soulful "verbal contortionists" are what they enjoy in style. On the other hand, Diana might be considered by many to be better than both in natural voice tone (especially in her early years) and as an audience entertainer. It's all good !
seereeuss 1 year ago
@seereeuss Diana nor Patti are better singers than Aretha. Aretha is just something that god gave to music.
TheQueenAretha 1 year ago
@TheQueenAretha
Results make a statement for her that none of us can ignore.
seereeuss 1 year ago
@seereeuss If that is so than why has Aretha sold more albums. Success does not make you a better singer, there is so many reasons why Aretha is a better singer and they are not at all superficial. Aretha is in a league of superior singers.
TheQueenAretha 1 year ago
@TheQueenAretha Actually, I have not stated that EITHER is better than the other. I simply responded to YOUR statement that one is. According to record, Di reigned as queen over ALL other artists - pop and soul - with a Number One hit close to ten times. And Rea only did that once. So my point is only this: We must all admit that Di HAS had many moments when, in action, she proved 2B THEsuperior1. And no one should discredit her simply because she brings a rainbow of qualities to the table.
seereeuss 1 year ago
@seereeuss That record is wrong. The records show that Diana has sold over 80 million albums while Aretha has sold over 100. Aretha, Diana and Barbra were the best selling female vocalist of there generation. In reality Barbra is the top selling vocalist. Now if you add Diana's hits from the Supremes she has more hits than any female on the billboard charts, but in album sells Aretha has sold more. Aretha has two on the billboard and 20 number 1s on the rnb charts.
TheQueenAretha 1 year ago
@seereeuss Ree has more top 40 hits than any woman in music as well are more million sellling singles than any other woman for that matter. In terms of music there is no one more accomplished that Aretha Franklin. She is superior in everyway.
TheQueenAretha 1 year ago
@TheQueenAretha None of the records I cited are incorrect. In direct competition for superiority, Di has close to ten times bested ALL artist - including Rea - with some Number One pop hit or another, as I stated. And often, she has even taken vacations in the way of Michael Jackson with no need to even appear with records to sell. On the other hand, you have'nt made me forget that I'm a fan of Rea as well !! Between the two, the best live vocalizations I've seen came from her.

Gavin123ism 1 year ago
Of course Diana worked very hard but so did Aretha and so did any woman before them that made it possible for either oboth of them to be on tv. I know of the names of the woman that came before Aretha and Diana, Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughan, Billie Holiday, Mahalia Jackson to name a few.
TheQueenAretha 1 year ago
I say Aretha. Diana is great, awesome performer, great presence. But Aretha, her voice can't be reproduced. The raspyness, the tone. How she can belt it out. That's singing and only a few people can do it. Her voice is 1 in a Million like Tina, Patti, Whitney, 2 name a few. You can't immitate them. But you can immitate Diana.
dreaminofme07 1 year ago
@dreaminofme07 Diana Ross has often been imitated...but has never been duplicated!! Her's is the voice that is like no other, all those singers (except Tina) are comparable to Aretha, that church type hollerin'; Diana was and is the only original in the bunch, she conveyed emotional character without screaming thru a song, you actually hear the words.... wow what a concept. And her glamour...Aretha herself has attemped to capture that Diana stage aura, but unfortunately she cant, NO ONE can!
reyrey031068 1 year ago

U keep her hunny!
dreaminofme07 1 year ago
@dreaminofme07 I'm not sure what you're referring to as my "concept" of real singing or a "real voice" since i never talked about that, but..... You seem to be just another silly queen who thinks just because Aretha can scream her head off(or at least she used to)that makes her the best of all time! It doesnt! I love Aretha as a singer, but that really is all she is.. Diana Ross has accomplished waaaay more in her career, films,(oscar nom for Lady Sings the Blues). tv, Broadway(Tony Award)cont.
reyrey031068 1 year ago
@reyrey031068 And of course music! And it was Diana whoBillboard mag named as Artist of the Century! Not Rere... Miss Ross was also named as the most sucessful female entertainer in history at one point so..My preference is Diana's voice, but that is just my opinion. but you cant argue with facts....
reyrey031068 1 year ago
@reyrey031068 Aretha from 1967 to 1971 was the top selling female artist by Billboard Mag. Not Diana Ross.Diana is not the most successful entertainer in history. Ree has sold more than her and Barbra Streisand is the top selling female singer of all time. Look i don't have any bad words for Diana.
TheQueenAretha 1 year ago
@reyrey031068 Interesting.... Ad yet still Diana's "singing" which let me remind you "you have spoke nothing of" seems 2 be a constant notation in your paragraphs since your FIRST response 2 my comment. I really don't need 2 continue this "Comment Battle" with you anymore, because the topic of this entire video is "Who is The Better Artist", meaning vocals. And for the record, Ms. Diana had to go out and do movies and whatever else, because bluntly, She DON'T sing THAT GOOD!! Now comment on that
dreaminofme07 1 year ago
@dreaminofme07 I feel stupid responding to an idiot such as yourself, but whatever...Diana Ross is a very, very, very successful SINGER, regardless of the fact that people like you dont like her voice or prefer aretha or patti or anyone else for that matter she has proven herself by SINGING for the last 40 yrs, and she is still headlining tours alone and SINGING!! Being a successful ARTIST does not mean being only a good singer! Its means all around ENTERTAINER!! Have a nice life psycho!

Diana is nice but come on when it comes to pure singing and creating. Miss Ross doesn't come close to Aretha. Plus Diana's best music came when she was a member of The Supremes.
The only Motown artists that had control of their music was Stevie, Smokey and Marvin.

Now stop being silly already!
reyrey031068 2 years ago
I wonder if it is you with the emotional and mental problems, i don't have a problem with Diana. Not at all. Aretha is the most respected woman in music, Diana was very successful but she was diverse as Aretha. Aretha took more chances than Diana ever did, Diana is a diva but did she innovate a genre like Aretha did, did she write, produce, play an instrument like Aretha did. Hell no! Have you hear Aretha's Amazing Grace Album or actually watched any Aretha performance. Aretha is superior.

reyrey031068 2 years ago
@reyrey031068 No i am not but you are fucked out of your mind. It is not an opinion but a fact that Aretha is the most respected woman in music, she has more Grammys than anyother black woman in music and is still winning them, her voice was declared a National Treasure, is the younger person to ever recieve a Kennedy Award, Rolling Stone Mag voted her The Greatest SInger of All Time. Diana is a good singer but she is no where in level of a singer Aretha is.
TheQueenAretha 2 years ago
It is not Aretha appearance that the people were focussed on it was her voice and the feeling she gave off. Aretha did things with her voice that DIana or no one could ever do. TheQueenAretha 2 years ago
Lets not get crazy now.... Aretha Franklin is NOT the Queen of Music. She is considered the Queen of Soul..... Diana is great but she is not the whole package.

BOth ladies' careers have altered since the 80's. Aretha is still winning grammies! She does not sound like she used to at all though. I hate to say that but it is simply true. laron214 2 years ago
They are both American Treasures. and I love both, But Diana is the tops!!!
reyrey031068 2 years ago 2
Patti and Chaka are nothing like Aretha. There isn't a singer that is like Aretha. She is one of a kind. No one has made a bigger mark on music than Aretha. There is only one Aretha Franklin. Diana is good in her own right but Aretha is better. Aretha is able to sing in any genre she want and excelled in it. Also Aretha is not a screamer, she is a singer whole has the power to belt. Most importantly she is a interpreter, she can tell you a story with her voice and have you believe. Ree is no.1
TheQueenAretha 2 years ago
I think it is hugely unfair to pit these artists against each other, Aretha is the undisputed Queen of Soul, she has won a million Grammies and all....But. Diana Ross ushered in an era where Black female singers didnt have to have started in the church, and be all sassy and bold and mix gospel and soul. Her voice was classy and honest and sweet and crystal clear. She brought glamour and style and beauty to POP music. Aretha has given props to Diana by remaking her songs over the years
reyrey031068 2 years ago
Aretha is the definition of music, Diana is amazing but she isn't no Ella Fitzgerald who i love to deatha and she didn't start in the church. Aretha voice was strong but sweet, masculine but at the sametime feminine. I will say that Diana is the epitome of Glamour and black beauty but Aretha is the queen of music as a whole.

TheQueenAretha, I think I may have been responding to mycalling52's comment that Diana is not a singer, sorry for the confusion.
