Priceless acting. Silent movie making at its very best! Beautifully planned and executed. Hyde Pierce played it brilliantly, and full marks to the wonderful Eddie too.
Quite possibly the funniest opening sequence in the history of sitcoms. I remember seeing this when it first aired and I was laughing so hard my sides hurt.
LMAO. This makes me laugh hysterically every time. The fire extinguisher is the best part, and then him fainting again at the end. David Hyde Pierce is a genius.
This is one of the most fantastic pieces of comedy!! Sheer genius. It plays to perfection almost all of Niles' obessessions. (except his thing for Daphne ;) )
This scene was done because a critic in a magazine wrote Frasier should be on the radio because the humour is purely intellectual and the actual visuals provided very little. So they filmed this scene to show that they could also do physical humour.
This is one of the best moments EVER on Frasier. I have tried to tape all of the reruns,in hopes that I would catch this. Thanks for putting it on-I loved it.
The best comedy skit on TV, hands down. He does all this without a single sentence, but gets the point across from smelling smoke to realizing the cleaning fluid is flammable! BRAVO man, bravo.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
@GooseandMindi Oh c'mon, it's hardly subtle. Not taking a swing at his acting in any way, but the way the scene is directed you could replace him with a plank of wood with a blank face drawn on it and still get the point across. :p
it was this scene which I watched somewhere else which inspired me to watch every single episode of Frasier! I just finished the last episode today. It took me about 2 months. Now I'm starting to watch Cheers from season 1 and I am already missing Frasier and all the other characters!
And here was me thinking the Cranes were purely fictitious. C'mon, Eddie. Let's get a beer before we end up covered with lavender and coconut moisturizer.
LOL. It's the little things that get me. The little "scritch" sound as he puts up the ironing cord holder, the take he does when he reads the can by candlelight, then realizes it's flammable, the look he give Eddie right after the sofa ignites. Bravo, Mr. Hyde Pierce!
A TV critic for the USA Today once called this bit the funniest 5 minutes of TV. I can clearly see why. I find it refreshing in our day of CGI this and crude humour that that there's still something to be said for good old-fashioned physical comedy. Hyde Pierce gives Harold Lloyd, Charlie Chaplin, Mr. Bean and Buster Keaton a run for their money.
I just love the way he flops onto the couch at the sight of his own blood :-)
My wife and I have watched Frazier re-runs for six months trying to find this. Someone said: try YouTube and type in Frazier - Niles fire and Voila! Thank you so much. LOAO til it hurt. This is fabulous.
No words necessary. This is brilliant.

David is a GENIUS. He manages the physical comedy at high levels. It´s not easy. Here he is as good as Rowan Atkinson (or better).
No wonder why he received a Tony in Broadway.
