@Schpwuette yeah they're quite technical drawings and he doesn't really explain them in this talk, so if you didn't know them before it's not a surprise to be still mystified afterwards. they are called penrose diagrams but he's too modest to refer to them by that name. it's an abstract way of illustrating all the relativistic "horizons" that exist in a particular geometry. i think you can safely "skim over" it and still get the crux of his idea - they are not central to the argument.

@Schpwuette by the way, the "symmetry axis" bit is the easiest to understand: imagine rotating the whole picture (into and out of the computer screen) 360 degrees around the orange dotted line, in order to sweep out a chunk of 3d space. this represents the universe. so for example the triangular one labelled "Minkowski Space" sweeps out a diamond shape with the "symmetry axis" running up through the middle. it's the penrose diagram for empty space with no black hole. hope this makes sense...

Wow, Dyson and Krauss referenced by Penrose (3:40). Very cool! If I knew Lawrence Kraus had published since the 1990s, I would have had my eyes on his work for a much longer time. (I've read »The Emperor's New Mind« in 1993 with no mention of Krauss nor Dyson).
