Ever since Bill Berry's departure, the sound I've been yearning for was his contribution to those stunning three part harmonies the band did so well. Listening to this, it's as though he never left. That's a compliment. Outstanding...
I think that "UP"was an awesome record, I can still listen to that record all the way through just like we did with "Murmur-Reckoning" cassette tapes back in 1984-1985. R.E.M. has been a class act, and this does sound like a "good-bye sounding album" With all the lyrics on this record it sounds as though they were planning on making this their last, although it is just their last on Warner Bros., so who knows, they will tour again God willing!
Great first half of a song. If they had finished it off with just a few of the ah-ahs, we're talking instnat R.E.M. top 20 classic. As it is, just solid, like the album it is from.
This disc is a choice piece of work from the Athenians, and certainly a return to form, if they ever really left it. But no way it is their best. Hard to top "Murmur", "Green" & "Adventures in Hi-Fi"
Why REM isnt touring said by Mills. “For touring with us, we tour because we want to play. We don’t tour to support a record. We don’t tour to get our name out there. We tour because we like to play. To tour when your heart isn’t in it would be a real bad mistake for us. 2008 was a long hard year on the road and we’re just not feeling it right now. We go with our instinct. Our two biggest selling records ever, we didn’t tour on them. So maybe some of that magic will rub off on this one too.”
This is -again- an R.E.M. album that grows and grows. I like to listen to it in the car, full volume, window open, spring in the air and dreaming... like i did since i was a child with all the old R.E.M. ones
Thank you to Mr and Mrs Stipe and Mr and Mrs Mills for giving their sons voices that would cause angels to weep. Little did they know that their sons would not only share the same name but would also share similar voices. Wonder if being named Michael had anything to do with it lol. Mike was conceived in California and Michael in Georgia and while they were half a world away the fates conspired to bring them together.
Artists make a living out of merchandise and touring. Most of what we pay for albums goes directly to the record companies...only a comparatively small proportion reaches the band's pockets!
@KJS80s: I am happy to here that you agree with me and by the way Stipe is not waving if you take a close look on it. He is actually just putting his hand in the air, so he appeals like a revolutionary man.
We have to stay positive about them, until they actually say "goodbye"
It remind me of "Final Straw" because of the uplifting sound and completly genius lyric.
This is a R.E.M classic already in my opinion.
KJS80s@: Why should it be were last recond they seems to be more rocking then ever and Michael looks almost like a God in the studio clip to "Oh my heart".
@nnncnoel I agree a band like R.E.M. never stops, well their music will go on forever, but listen to the lyrics in All The Best and it does make you think perhaps this is their grand finale. And besides look at stipey on the front cover, is he waving goodbye!?
It's too bad that Vedder doesn't sing any lines. I kept on waiting, and waiting for him to handle some verses. That's somewhat disappointing, but still not a bad song.
these men dont do music like anyone else.they change lives, opinions, ears, moods and help ya when ya dont have any fucker to talk to...soak em up...it did me the world of good ....GO GUYS!!!!!!
@tattooal100 During the worst days of my life I turned on R.E.M's stuff and instantly I felt like that things will get better. Their music is amazing and I don't care what anyone else says! They are, and will always be, my favorite band of all time!
@pullformore hahaha, well it would be nice to hear Vedder, seeing that there was so much Patti Smith in Blue (which sounds excellent, by the way) listen to Ukulele songs by Eddie Vedder.. what I've heard is pretty good! not as good as Collapse Into Now, obviously :)
I agree with every positive comment. Every one of the 5 tracks I've heard so far could, and/or should, be singles. This could be a greatest hits album before it's even released.! I absolutely love it to bits
At first I thought this song was all right but nothing special. Then I listened to it after not hearing it for a couple of weeks and it gave me chills. Apparently, it grew to be special!
This song is really growing on me. At first I was kind of cold towards it, but the melody and harmonies are so strong. Plus, I like how sarcastic and apathetic the lyrics are, and then how they're contradicted by the uplifting ending. Excellent!
The thing is, Paul, if they had called it quits post-Berry, we would have been deprived of a whole lot of under-valued, high quality, evolving music. I love the Berry-era REM catalog, but they have produced some outstanding music since his departure as well. @paulf7007 It seems you may have missed the point of the song. If I were you I'd go back, listen to the lyrics again, and think of them in relation to the FEELINGS the band is trying to convey with the harmonies in the last two thirds of the song. The lyrics will then seem anything but awful.

People need to stop complaining about there needs to be an extra verse. It's called breaking the traditional song structure. You know, it's being different? Something which needs to be done as every song is basically the same these days.
Quite good, but not superlative. The sound is fresh, but the second part needed some lyrics, it's repetitive. Eddie Vedder sings on last three seconds :)
When I really sat down, paid attention to the lyrics and what was going on in the song.. honestly all I can say is this is another REM song that's just too beautiful for words.
When I really sit down and pay attention to what these guys are able to do with their music, the beauty of it all just makes me cry.
REM is the only band that's been able to do this to me time after time.
Been a fan since 1991. This is the greatest band ever! Consistently outstanding and incredible albums. This song makes me cry it's so beautiful. My only complaint is that Michael doesn't give Mikey more songs to sing. Mike has a wonderful voice and it needs to be heard as lead vocalist on more than 3 songs. Mike is so underrated as a vocalist and a musician it's not even funny. I was 10 feet from Mike on stage at an UP concert and I nearly died he is such a beautiful man.
Listen, these guys do not care about commercial success at all. They are just doing what they love to do and doing it in a mature beautiful way. They do not need money or critical acclaim. The only reason you see all the promotions for the new album is the intrest held by the record label.
I agree with the apples and oranges reply. Do I think "It Happened Today" is as amazing as "Fall on Me"? No. I mentioned the harmonies being great, though that doesn't mean it ranks with R.E.M.'s greatest songs. My opinion is the lyrics on "It Happened Today" are OK, but nothing great. But the harmonies, which last for the majority of the song, are awesome. Rather than just have a few more lines and then hear "hip hip hooray," the harmonies kick the song into a much higher gear.
wow, this reminds me so much of murmur/reckoning era REM. never thought they'd make anything that sounded like that again. i'm so happy with this song.
R.E.M. seems so lost? I disagree! The harmonies on this song are among the best R.E.M. have ever done! I wouldn't change a thing! "It Happened Today" and "Discoverer" are supremely confident songs by a great band. The variety of styles on the songs I heard on the Collapse into Now trailer reminds me of New Adventures in Hi-Fi, one of my favorite albums! March can't get here fast enough!
@IberoLuc You're comparing apples and oranges. The mood conveyed by this song isn't meant to be anything like any of the songs you named. It's meant to convey (non-lyrically) the sense of joy and release after suffering a non-descript hardship, or helping someone else through such a difficulty. It's trying only to capture this positive feeling and it does so quite well. Why should it be compared to songs that are much different? Compare it with Shiny, Happy People and it fares quite well.
@theyself Let's see what @Michelle50415 thinks... it could be interesting seeing that apples and oranges are all fruits, they serve the same purpose (refresh)... so I think, apples and oranges are not so different. REM could never make songs so different, because, as far as everyone here says, "you always recognize them".
The reason I think people says new songs are great, is called blindness of the fan... in a few years you may see what I'm talking about.
@IberoLuc My point about "apples and oranges" is that this song is trying to convey an emotion which is more akin to Shiny, Happy People than to the songs you identified, and it does it almost entirely through the voices and not the lyrics, which makes it much more interesting than Shiny. I'm saying this not as a fan but as someone considering the two songs objectively.
It may also be that in a few years you will see what I'm talking about.
@IberoLuc I understand you cannot love every song. Actually I do. Well, I love almost every song. But you're not me. And I disagree with Mike. I think every album of R.E.M. is completely different, but with the same base. The way Mike and Peter play is the same.
Well, I hope you'll like the new album - I already do :)
ok, so after 1:24 just moans and noises but no lyrics? What the hell is this? Are we being given an unfinished demo video? Some one needs to tell Mike, Peter, and Michael that they don't have to rush albums. Maybe if Bill came back....
@rem2525 I understand what you mean, and I was a little disappointed in the lyrics the first time I heard it. But the harmonies on this song are extraordinary. Even though the first minute and a half is good, the vocals in the last couple of minutes really transform the song -- and make it great, in my opinion.
@stevenewman100 I used to think it sacrilege to speak ill of anything done by REM, but as I/they get older, I'm starting to wonder if perhaps REM isn't the infallible force I thought they were when I was a tween. (During the Doccument/Green years) However, I will say that Michael Stipe can sing anything *(even the back of gospel albums) and I'm on board.
I hope they can do better on Collapse into now, but as far as I have heard, I will be disappointed. The reasons?, it seems beautiful, it seems lovely, but we have heard all of these before. We need a new REM, like the one we heard on Accelerate. So, my best wishes for the rest of the album... because I expect better.

@davidf2805 I hope David the whole album sounds better... but the "medley" we can hear on youtube is not so great. I mean, compare it with the Dublin "not a show" songs and they sounded so much better. Thats my reference for saying I maybe disappointed. But I hope not :)
@IberoLuc Can't you hear? This IS R.E.M. They're still as unique and brilliant as they were. R.E.M. changes, like everyone does in the world, but the sound will never dissappear.
@Annatheprincezz REM means so much for me, but also I cannot celebrate all they put out... I mean, part of loving one group is a chance to be critic, not saying "I love everything". That's why I celebrate a lot Accelerate because they decided to do something more direct, not a "return to Automatic for the people" as Mike said "Collapse into now" sounds like. REM is good, is bad... and that's why we love them. They have alternatives for the alternates.
@IberoLuc He didn't say Collapse Into Now sounds like Automatic. He only compared the diversity of the songs on Collapse with the diversity of songs on Automatic. You can hear from these clips that Collapse sounds nothing like Automatic.
I hope they can do better on Collapse into now, but as far as I have heard, I will be disappointed. The reasons?, it seems beautiful, it seems lovely, but we have heard all of these before.
Such an amazing band. I love this song.

Mike Mills sounds amazing on this one.

Michelle50415 1 year ago
wow, this reminds me so much of murmur/reckoning era REM. never thought they'd make anything that sounded like that again. i'm so happy with this song.
thetrain3000 1 year ago
R.E.M. seems so lost?
Michelle50415 1 year ago 2
@Michelle50415 Do you think that "It happened today" is among "Shaking through", "Fall on me" or "Half a world away"?
IberoLuc 1 year ago 2
@IberoLuc You're comparing apples and oranges. The mood conveyed by this song isn't meant to be anything like any of the songs you named. It's meant to convey (non-lyrically) the sense of joy and release after suffering a non-descript hardship, or helping someone else through such a difficulty. It's trying only to capture this positive feeling and it does so quite well. Why should it be compared to songs that are much different? Compare it with Shiny, Happy People and it fares quite well.
theyself 1 year ago
@theyself Let's see what @Michelle50415 thinks... it could be interesting seeing that apples and oranges are all fruits, they serve the same purpose (refresh)... so I think, apples and oranges are not so different. REM could never make songs so different, because, as far as everyone here says, "you always recognize them".
The reason I think people says new songs are great, is called blindness of the fan... in a few years you may see what I'm talking about.
IberoLuc 1 year ago
@IberoLuc My point about "apples and oranges" is that this song is trying to convey an emotion which is more akin to Shiny, Happy People than to the songs you identified, and it does it almost entirely through the voices and not the lyrics, which makes it much more interesting than Shiny. I'm saying this not as a fan but as someone considering the two songs objectively.
It may also be that in a few years you will see what I'm talking about.

where`s eddie vedder in the song
HORACERO 1 year ago
@HORACERO He's doing the lower harmonies and the last solo voice at the end of the song is him.

Where`s Eddie Vedder in the song?
HORACERO 1 year ago
@IberoLuc I understand you cannot love every song. Actually I do. Well, I love almost every song. But you're not me. And I disagree with Mike. I think every album of R.E.M. is completely different, but with the same base. The way Mike and Peter play is the same.
Well, I hope you'll like the new album - I already do :)
Annatheprincezz 1 year ago
ok, so after 1:24 just moans and noises but no lyrics? What the hell is this? Are we being given an unfinished demo video? Some one needs to tell Mike, Peter, and Michael that they don't have to rush albums. Maybe if Bill came back....
rem2525 1 year ago
@rem2525 I understand what you mean, and I was a little disappointed in the lyrics the first time I heard it. But the harmonies on this song are extraordinary. Even though the first minute and a half is good, the vocals in the last couple of minutes really transform the song -- and make it great, in my opinion.
stevenewman100 1 year ago
@stevenewman100 I used to think it sacrilege to speak ill of anything done by REM, but as I/they get older, I'm starting to wonder if perhaps REM isn't the infallible force I thought they were when I was a tween. (During the Doccument/Green years) However, I will say that Michael Stipe can sing anything *(even the back of gospel albums) and I'm on board.
* Voice of Harold is one of my all-time fav's
rem2525 1 year ago
@rem2525 I totally agree... REM seems so lost, and I don't want that Reveal moment again where nothing really happens

IberoLuc 1 year ago
@IberoLuc Can't you hear? This IS R.E.M. They're still as unique and brilliant as they were. R.E.M. changes, like everyone does in the world, but the sound will never dissappear.
Annatheprincezz 1 year ago 3
@Annatheprincezz REM means so much for me, but also I cannot celebrate all they put out... I mean, part of loving one group is a chance to be critic, not saying "I love everything". That's why I celebrate a lot Accelerate because they decided to do something more direct, not a "return to Automatic for the people" as Mike said "Collapse into now" sounds like. REM is good, is bad... and that's why we love them. They have alternatives for the alternates.
IberoLuc 1 year ago
@IberoLuc He didn't say Collapse Into Now sounds like Automatic. He only compared the diversity of the songs on Collapse with the diversity of songs on Automatic. You can hear from these clips that Collapse sounds nothing like Automatic.
