Just brilliant ,my favourite ,what energy ,what a voice ,and singing a beautiful song (mind you Im biased coming from over the pond ) I really dont think ive ever heard a voice so sweet and melodic . Where are all the todays singers that can compare ,now theres a challenge, thanks so very much for posting .
This is a great upbeat 1960s Jimmie Rodgers hit, somewhat reminiscent of Roger Miller's "England Swings Like A Pendulum Do" - a brisk, lively, cheerful song extolling the natural beauty of Great Britain's countryside - and, one of the few successful American salvos in the face of what came to be known musically as "The British Invasion." Jimmie Rodgers was an extraordinary talent, deserving of much greater recognition & artistic respect.
Thank you for posting! There were one or two versions of this version on YouTube before, but for some reason they were taken down. I was really annoyed because I couldn't download this version of it anywhere, but now it's back! :o) Thanks for sharing it with us!
@propertyofranger I think the other version might be Rolf Harris's which is more of a satire in the latter verses, and it is on here also, I came to England at the beginning of 1960 and this was the first song i heard, this version and a big hit at the time, very nostalgic
Hmm. No, the Rolf Harris one is extremely memorable. The versions I were thinking of were not satirical at all, but quite lovely. But yes, I agree - this is a lovely version :)
Splendid, I really feel like relaxing in a deckchair with one of those old fashioned sun guards with slight twists on my head, with a selection of Mr Kipling cakes. But first we should privatise buisnesses, kick out the wogs, abolish nu-labour and any other far-left loony party just so England can be the way it should be; respectful! *inhales air* ahhhhhhhhh, now I can adjust my Daily Telegraph with a slight two-handed flick and get back to dreaming of a lovely Britain - VOTE CONSERVATIVE!
What the hell. To paraphrase Queen Victoria "Close your eyes and think of robins". LOL Thanks for dropping by and watching and thanks for your comment. Take care.
@opo9JAMES actually, I think American robins and English robins are different. That last bird is what we in America call a robin. I've seen robins in English films and it's more of a small red-breasted blue bird to us.
My grandma use to sing me this song! Aww, so sweet! (I don't know about the girl at the end...:)

I think it's an American robin; a lot bigger than ours. Great to hear this song again though, it was a favourite of my Mums.

its a great song, and Jimmie is a beautiful singer but there is one huge flaw in this - THERE ARE NO FIREFLIES IN ENGLAND.

it is an American robin. something you wont see in an English country garden.

I believe the bird shown is what they call a Robin in the USA and is not related to the British Robin.
