  • i love this!! pls. keep on posting!!

  • this was my very first thing i created in 3dsmax from the official tutorial from autodesk

  • Thank you so very much for the detailed instructions! =]

  • thanks

detailed instructions :) helped a lot

  • can u take the top of a regular cartoon image to create like the rounded top of the chess piece if ur creating one like this?

  • that depends on your cartoons images. If the side are more the less the same on every side then the lathe modifier is your option. When you want to create something like a cartoon head, then you proabaly wanna use spline cage modeling. See the tutorial about "Creating the knight".

  • ok thanks!

  • uhm.. when I open the chess image, then I don't get a blank screen as you have, but the top view port is covered with that image.. : /

  • make sure that you have the viewport selected where you want to have the image being displayed in.

  • tyvm mate :)

  • haha typical me i have the folder but no image :/

  • oh well i just used one off the internet

  • thanks alot for this mate.. i've been into Maya for the past year or 2, and took some classes on it, but now i've started at a school where they teach 3ds max instead... i was kinda sleeping in class on the first day where they showed us how to model this way (dunno, felt too good to pay attention to something as "simple" as a chessboard), but im aware now that max works in an entirely different way! This is just what i needed to catch up ;)

  • Glad that it helped you. Good luck with your training. If you know how to work with Maya, then Max shoudn't give you to much trouble.

  • well tbh i REALLY have alot of trouble adjusting :S Most ppl tell me that i should only worry about key bindings etc, but even when i find the tool i am looking for, it seems to work in an entirely different way. I've tried to find a "switching from maya to max" tutorial, but with no luck :S I'm not a pro at maya, but managed to make a few short animations, and used to be quite good at texturing, but in Max im stuck at scratch :S

  • I learned 3d max by going through all of the tutorials that came along with it. This video tutorial is based on one of them. I think one tutorial about the difference between max and maya isn't enough. You really need to start from the beginning and learn the possibilities.

  • okay thanks, i guess i just have to suck it up and start all over with max... who knows, i might even like it in time :)
