the man who would be flesh? I think i am missinterperateing it... Arbeit macht is like a title for the next in line for the thrown... does anyone know what it's supposed to mean?
@ktcal8 Arbeit macht frei was the sentence which was to read at the gates of many concentration camps in germany in the third reich. it means "work makes (you) free". in this case, carcass' title for the song is a pun and it would be translated as "work makes flesh"
@ktcal8 "Arbeit Macht Frei" was the inscription above the gates of Auschwitz. It was a cruel lie meaning "work makes you free." Carcass warped the saying into meaning "work makes flesh." Glad to help ya bro! :D
Hey check out my new song! I'm a solo death/black metal artist and the new song is called Cancer Of The Earth! Any feedback at all is welcome! THANKS!
@MrGoth75 it was actually Bill steer who came up with the drum beat for corporal, but i agree Ken Owen was a genius when he was behind the kit, such a shame what the guy went through
The guitar work as always with carcass, exceptional, the drums not loud enough, still a good track to listen to EXTREMELY loudly while driving.........
After playing guitar for nearly two years and playing mostly Slayer and Metallica trying to learn incarnated solvent abuse and heartwork has come as a bit of a shock, these guys are metal gods and truly technically skilled instrumentalists :)
Hahaha, are you mad?! Owen outclassed by his bandmates? Oh sure, as if this album could´ve been any better with another drummer. Just remember, a band is what it is, with it's flaws too and that is why we get masterpieces such as this one.
I don't want to argue against a word-for-word quote: "Ken was a pioneering drummer, first amongst a handful to master the blast beat." from a WIkipedia article about Ken Owen that begins with an "unsourced or poorly-sourced article" warning.
I'll just stand by my opinion that Owen was out-classed by his bandmates.
Wikipedia is a cool site. Lots of really neat stuff on there. That said, I think (and I may be aging myself here), it's better to form one's own opinion regarding music and art.
Do a Google Image-search for Arbeit Macht Frei ;)
"Arbeit Macht Frei" was written on the gates of concentration camps back on WWII. It was supposed to be inspirational for the people lead there, so that they think that working hard will set them free.
"Arbeit Macht Fleisch" doesn't really mean anything, but it's Carcass so \m/
frei does mean frei, feuer means fire. You are probably thinking of Rammstein's 'feuer frei', which means 'fire at will' (or literally 'fire freely'). Try learning German then you will know what you are talking about. It's fairly similar to English and is not terribly hard.
You're probably right. I am now learning Japanese instead, and although they are moving very quickly (it is university), it is arguably easier than many, as the rules of gender, number etc. don't appply to Japanese (I think). The structures and rules I have looked at so far are pretty easy and straightforward.
guys seriously just shut the fuck up if u dont know shit about german... i dont know much about german but i can speak the language my self... at least i didnt complain about the name of the song ( which is correct) ....
Well, you can obviously tell the one who did write the lyrics is German, whic happarently means 'work makes meatless,' I don't know about that, I'll ask a friend of mine who is German, but the definition is from google translate.
German works similar to English in that where English uses -less, German has -loss, don't think it's meatless.
The name is most probably a reference to the "motto" of nazi concentration camps, which was "Arbeit Macht Frei", work makes free. "Arbeit Macht Fleisch" would then mean something like "work makes (lifeless) meat". Turning the living people that came into the lifeless meat.
and judging on the lyrics of this song you would be right....what i get from the song is they are talking about a machine that takes in live flesh and bone and grinds it into (lifeless) meat.
Actually, Arbeit macht Fleisch means, work makes meat, but the song refers to the concentration camps in germany during WW2 In the part were the lyrics say "Arbeit macht Fleisch", the singer says "Arbeit macht frei" and the Nazis wrote "Arbeit macht frei"(-> work frees) over the camps gates(the jews imprisoned in those camps wore used to do slave work for the ss). Thats what its all about...
No that isnt true...this is a headline and every word in a headline is written with a capital letter besides the lyrics is about the torture that happened to people in concentration camps...just watch in the related video list..."Mortal Coil"...mortal with a capital letter but its still an adjective...."Buried Dreams"...but still buried is an adjective....furthermore "Work Might Flesh" doesnt make any sense here....
I know, im german(you can notice from my english:)) , what i mean is, that the guy who pu the video online is pretty shure better in english than german and he wrote all words with capital letter because of the english headline rule and not because theyre all nouns

the titel ofthe song is written "Arbeit Macht Fleisch"
the first letter of each word is a capital letter
in german this means, that the three words are nouns
so in this case, "Macht" means "power"/"force"/"might" and not "makes"
