  • the man who would be flesh? I think i am missinterperateing it... Arbeit macht is like a title for the next in line for the thrown... does anyone know what it's supposed to mean?

  • @ktcal8 Arbeit macht frei was the sentence which was to read at the gates of many concentration camps in germany in the third reich. it means "work makes (you) free". in this case, carcass' title for the song is a pun and it would be translated as "work makes flesh"

  • @ktcal8 "Arbeit Macht Frei" was the inscription above the gates of Auschwitz. It was a cruel lie meaning "work makes you free." Carcass warped the saying into meaning "work makes flesh." Glad to help ya bro! :D

  • work makes meat, lol

  • My favorite song on Heartwork

  • one of the most creative role by Ken in this song besides in corporal jigsore and pedigree butch..neway that just my opinion..

  • @MrGoth75 it was actually Bill steer who came up with the drum beat for corporal, but i agree Ken Owen was a genius when he was behind the kit, such a shame what the guy went through

  • @Feraswondervahnn -yes, its true..bill is the man behind this..

  • Yep... This is HIPPIE METAL!

  • seems like every band needs to make a german-titled song :D

  • DEATH METAL SUCKS

  • @metalmosher451

    just like ur mom (:

  • @peopleispoep ppl on youtube have no life so shut ur face

  • @metalmosher451

how the fuck am i supposed to shut my face?

  • @metalmosher451 ye u have no life. thats right.

  • @metalmosher451 at first this is not death metal fucker, and second YOU SUCKS, Satan wait for u fucker, DIE

  • @metalmosher451 says metallica's bitch

  • @metalmosher451 that's because you are a fag

death metal is a man's hobby

    get lost and a life

  • this song, rot n' roll, and heartwork are the best songs on the album.

  • german song name english lyrics ..... that´s not ordinary ..... but cool ^^

  • arbeit macht frei ist der orginalname und stand über dan kontzentrationslager kurz KZ

  • Heartwork is one of the few melodic death metal albums that doens't suck

because it is Death Metal with some melodic elements not overmelodic garbage like In Flames

  • Wasnt this on the gate to Aushchwitz death camp?

  • @phantomsfire980 almost.

  • Great Heavy rock album this, still like it to this very day.

  • shut up dick hole u piss me off

  • GRAVE TO THE GRIND!!

  • arbeit macht fleisch...lolz

i always loved carcass their sense of humour & sarcasm (or should i say carcasm?)

..keep on rotting in a free world

  • @tjeerdsma01: carcasm...fuk yeah

  • Best pun.

  • @tjeerdsma01 great comment

    keep on rotting.....

  • @tjeerdsma01

+3 internets for the "carcasm" bit.

  • arbeit macht fleisch? sidn die bekloppt oder wat

  • The guitar work as always with carcass, exceptional, the drums not loud enough, still a good track to listen to EXTREMELY loudly while driving.........

    \\m//

  • lol blöder wortwitz. könnte von rammstein sein der titel. aber ihr könnts ja eh net lesen xD

  • After playing guitar for nearly two years and playing mostly Slayer and Metallica trying to learn incarnated solvent abuse and heartwork has come as a bit of a shock, these guys are metal gods and truly technically skilled instrumentalists :)

  • Hahaha, are you mad?! Owen outclassed by his bandmates? Oh sure, as if this album could´ve been any better with another drummer. Just remember, a band is what it is, with it's flaws too and that is why we get masterpieces such as this one.

  • Ken was a pioneering drummer, first amongst a handful to master the blast beat.

An influence on many modern drummers.

  • I don't want to argue against a word-for-word quote: "Ken was a pioneering drummer, first amongst a handful to master the blast beat." from a WIkipedia article about Ken Owen that begins with an "unsourced or poorly-sourced article" warning.

I'll just stand by my opinion that Owen was out-classed by his bandmates.

Wikipedia is a cool site. Lots of really neat stuff on there. That said, I think (and I may be aging myself here), it's better to form one's own opinion regarding music and art.

  • @JayGun76 Dont forget mick harris from napalm death

  • @grandtheftautocj Or Mike Smith from Suffocation.

  • @chronicoscillator Yeah he is great too.

  • I thought the drumming (and the vocals) were a bit off in Heartwork, they're much better in Necroticism.

  • At your suggestion, I'm going to check out that album. Thanks.

Phenomenal duo guitar work from this band, judging by what I've heard so far (Heartwork).

  • Well, true, now he isn't since he had cranial hemorrhage, and his brain was damaged. But his innovative style was a real shock back in the 80's

  • nice! I just discovered this band and I have to say that this is good metal. I like to listen to all kinds of different metal genres

  • yea. i just discovered them too. there pretty sweet.haha

u should listen to cryptopsy and suffocation.

  • The title of this song is probably a reference's to the Factory farming...."The ausschwitz" for animals.

Most of the members are vegans.

  • it's incredible how stupid, ignorant fucks can turn EVERYTHING german into something nazi -.-'

YES it is a pun on "arbeit macht frei", the "motto" of Auschwitz, a sign over the entrance gate to Auschwitz 1 even says so (been there!)

NO that doesn't make this song nor the band nazi!

  • no fuck, fleisch means flesh !

Arbeit macht fleisch could be translated as work makes flesh it s parody on that slogan they are not nazis !!

  • Macht also means Might or Force

  • work will set you free

    source: migrant German teacher

  • Arbeit = work

    Macht = Will/can/makes

    Fleisch = Flesh

  • Do a Google Image-search for Arbeit Macht Frei ;)

"Arbeit Macht Frei" was written on the gates of concentration camps back on WWII. It was supposed to be inspirational for the people lead there, so that they think that working hard will set them free.

"Arbeit Macht Fleisch" doesn't really mean anything, but it's Carcass so \m/

  • well it does kinda. work makes flesh. perhaps flesh stands for food. so arbeit macht fleisch => work so you get food.

  • frei does mean frei, feuer means fire. You are probably thinking of Rammstein's 'feuer frei', which means 'fire at will' (or literally 'fire freely'). Try learning German then you will know what you are talking about. It's fairly similar to English and is not terribly hard.

  • Not terribly hard? O_O

So why is a german author making books about the "Maze of german Grammar"? xD

I´m from germany and i can tell you... the spellings are easy but the grammar is hell....

  • You're probably right. I am now learning Japanese instead, and although they are moving very quickly (it is university), it is arguably easier than many, as the rules of gender, number etc. don't appply to Japanese (I think). The structures and rules I have looked at so far are pretty easy and straightforward.

  • Fleisch means meat or flesh by the way - it's a pun apparently. Perhaps someone should have pointed it out earlier to end this argument.

  • It's their subtle sense of humour.

  • frei means fire.

  • nvm it means free.

  • yes I'm from germany and it means free :)

  • sorry man, frei means free :)

  • guys seriously just shut the fuck up if u dont know shit about german... i dont know much about german but i can speak the language my self... at least i didnt complain about the name of the song ( which is correct) ....

  • idiot abyssmetal i am not a nazi and learn to think before you write smth.

@Shauntrethefirst it was just my mistake, I thought fleisch meant free.

    nvm

  • "Arbeit macht Frei" was the original Nazi slogan, from which we can deduce that Frei means 'Free'. :p

  • Nazi slogan? thought it would be from the ddr people.

    Very nice song

    hails from germany

  • i love this album!

  • This stupid Nazi didn´read the lyrics... hahahaha. Always the same...

  • doesn't this mean "work makes you free" ? to be honest this is a motto that fits also for capitalism in a way.

  • fleisch=flesh/meat

  • No!!!

    thats nonsense...

no german would ever say "arbeit macht fleisch" without to reference to this song..

sorry for my bad english ;)

  • to humbertox

fuck you, nazis are pissing me off

  • Comment removed

  • hahaha

  • go fuck yourself!

  • awesome!!!!!!!! hail carcass

  • arbeit macht frei

  • Aprende a escribir mocoso.

  • puto

  • The whole album is a MASTERPIECE!!! Hail CARCASS!!!

  • You said it.

  • Heartwork = Sickest guitar tone ever.

  • its a huge massive sound but personally i think it doesn't come out well with very slow long notes

  • the normal is ''Arbeit macht Frei'' which means work gives freedom which is written in the dahau nazi camp...

  • Yeah right, but it was used in many camps, Sachsenhausen, Auschwitz 1 and 2, neuengamme.....

  • Work makes/ Power (means both in german, depending on the capital) Flesh

    fuck you

  • work makes meat!!!

  • beeper313, thnx for the following info on the definition, but I will still ask my friend anyways, he's German.

  • Well, you can obviously tell the one who did write the lyrics is German, whic happarently means 'work makes meatless,' I don't know about that, I'll ask a friend of mine who is German, but the definition is from google translate.

  • German works similar to English in that where English uses -less, German has -loss, don't think it's meatless.

The name is most probably a reference to the "motto" of nazi concentration camps, which was "Arbeit Macht Frei", work makes free. "Arbeit Macht Fleisch" would then mean something like "work makes (lifeless) meat". Turning the living people that came into the lifeless meat.

  • In most cases, anyway, but this one might be the one to use "fleischloss" or something, like that it's just meat or flesh.

  • and judging on the lyrics of this song you would be right....what i get from the song is they are talking about a machine that takes in live flesh and bone and grinds it into (lifeless) meat.

  • Actually, Arbeit macht Fleisch means, work makes meat, but the song refers to the concentration camps in germany during WW2 In the part were the lyrics say "Arbeit macht Fleisch", the singer says "Arbeit macht frei" and the Nazis wrote "Arbeit macht frei"(-> work frees) over the camps gates(the jews imprisoned in those camps wore used to do slave work for the ss). Thats what its all about...

  • the titel ofthe song is written "Arbeit Macht Fleisch"

the first letter of each word is a capital letter

in german this means, that the three words are nouns

so in this case, "Macht" means "power"/"force"/"might" and not "makes"

  • No that isnt true...this is a headline and every word in a headline is written with a capital letter besides the lyrics is about the torture that happened to people in concentration camps...just watch in the related video list..."Mortal Coil"...mortal with a capital letter but its still an adjective...."Buried Dreams"...but still buried is an adjective....furthermore "Work Might Flesh" doesnt make any sense here....

  • That thing with the capital letters is an English invention. Germans write only nouns with capital letters, even in headlines.

  • I know, im german(you can notice from my english:)) , what i mean is, that the guy who pu the video online is pretty shure better in english than german and he wrote all words with capital letter because of the english headline rule and not because theyre all nouns

  • Okay, das ist einleuchtend ;D

  • 3:30 The best part of this track. Greatwork ... ehm ... Heartwork

  • Carcass are sick

  • lol allein für den titel kann man 5* geben^^

  • wa frà...stu piezz è pop massicc

  • yeah keep uploading in the free world

  • one of the best songs off heartwork!
