How brave and true you are, standing up for human decency. I believe that people should refrain from visiting China until this stops, as all the time money is flooding in to China things will not alter.
How will not visiting China in any way help the Chinese people? Do you want to punish the Chinese government or the Chinese people? The American approach to foreign politics often centers around the cessation of relations with those we disapprove--as if maintaining a relationship with them will legitimize their actions. We think that isolating those we don't agree with will punish the other into realizing the need to conform to our ideology. It simply isn't as effective as diplomacy.

I do have one question however, why would they let him film all this?

It seems most Americans here are ignorant about Hu Jia's close ties with the CIA and the National Endowment for Democracy. In the USA, if a citizen conspires with a foreign intelligence agency trying to destabilize our government, we call it treason. Why should we expect China's government to react any differently.
The NED openly supports and funds the Chinese Democracy Movement as well as Reporters Without Borders. This isn't a secret, and all this information is publically available. Just do a little research. The western people that are being duped are the ones that unknowingly promote Western Imperialism and support the NED's efforts to destabilize the Chinese government. Make no mistake, the NED's intention isn't to bring democracy to China...it is to ensure that the USA remains the only superpower.
The information in the West often isn't much better. That is why you always have to personally verify any information, regardless of the source. Luckily, the National Endowment for Democracy openly admits its ties to groups like the Chinese Democracy Movement, Friends of Falun Gong, Reporters Without Borders, and almost all of the Tibetan "human rights" organizations. Most of this information is even included on the NED's own website. Of course the NED's site is blocked in China. So use a proxy.

I don't understand what make you western people or people living in the west makes you feel you know more about China than the Chinese. Why don't you ask why this guy receives such treatment. He deserves it. There are thousands of alternative ways to express your view and you can do it freely in China, he chose to be in that sensational way. Perhaps that will cater to the needs in the west, but no one feels sympathetic about him here in China.
you're a piece of shit. freedom is not to have people follow and harass you. in free countries the would be police arrested.we do not have to worry about what the government thinks. the chinese government is so corrupt and evil.sounds like you enjoy evil things. we in the west are getting sick of buying shit from china ,putting our people out of work and supporting that evil government.we cannot compete with sweat shops.we don't take shit from our leaders. fuck you and the commies and the ssp
yeah but how much shit have people been able to change because of the freedoms we enjoy. the change is not always immediate but it happens eventually. the only thing evil needs to succeed is for good men to stand by and do nothing.change most start somewhere even if it is a comment. thank god for internet and you tube. nothing is perfect and politicians do not run governments out of the kindness of their hearts.
He believed in what is right and what is wrong. That is all to it. I know the chinese government are very strick, because my dad is from their, but hey hopefully they will overcome the catastrophy give it time to heal.
'All that is required for evil to triumph is for men of goodwill to remain silent' - Edmund Burke
Hu Jia is a man of goodwill, and he did not remain silent !!!
People like Hu Jia are the reasons why there were progresses in human kinds' history. Let us and future generations, who are the benefactors of these progresses, not forget people like Hu Jia.
I know Hu Jia, having met him on several occasions in the late 90's when he was strictly working on environmental and animal issues. Hi is indeed a hero, but some of us who know him wonder at his methods. I believe he made a terrible strategic mistake when he made officials loose face with an unfortunate incident he orchestrated at an AIDS event in a village where most of the children had lost their parents because of AIDS tainted blood. I greatly admire this brave man, but his methods backfire
Yes, he did something. He got himself imprisoned while his wife and new baby struggle on without him now. I'm not criticizing his goals and ideals, but in China, one must work hard to change things without being so radical you get arrested or thrown out! It is a fine line. People who have never worked on sensitive issues in China don't know. How effective will he be now, out of action for 3 years! And with a wife and young child to care for. He is ill and may die in prison. What good is that?
slipspirit:"He got himself imprisoned while his wife and new baby struggle on without him"
My father got himself imprisoned while his wife and a her baby struggled
But there were many thousands of people like him imprisoned. But there were more in this struggle-10 million members-in smaller country than China,38 million.Nobody believed that freedom is going to happen soon, but people were trying to do SOMETHING. What is the name name of the country?
Strange because it looks like she has to appeal to help from abroad to protect her from her own nation's police? So I guess if it were you you'd just put up with it then.
strange because it showed that that was a strategy rather than an act of spontaneity. well, you would say "so what? we need to use strategy to fight against injustice". i guess i prefer to see a person who does sth because he wants to do that rather than to show he is doing that. if i were her, i may not be able to come up with the idea of shooting my own brave act which is designed.
Throwing people in jail or house arrest for speaking their mind "isn't so bad"? There are no perfect countries... however there are better countries. Governments should fear the wrath of the people, not the other way around.
hope you knew that in china there is a third of the word population...it isn't so easy to controll such a huge population...there are worse countries than china, but you now are all making such a fuss just because of the olimpic games
hope you knew that in china there is a third of the word population...it isn't so easy to controll such a huge population...there are worse countries than china, but you now are all making such a fuss just because of the olimpic games
@homunich I appreciate their efforts toward increased transparency in general, even if it their efforts are out-of-nowhere and after-the-fact, but given their apparent inability to back up their accusations with concrete fact, I think that until they can provide more than unqualified outbursts, they should post their comments elsewhere. For anyone who has paid attention to Hu Jia's situation, clearly his sources of funding, if any (remember, he was abducted for 6 weeks in early 2006 and has...
...spent most of the time since then in various forms of imprisonment), were at no point an issue the Chinese government took interest in, as best evidenced by Chinese state and non-Chinese commercial media coverage of the court proceedings. If the support Hu Jia provided for AIDS orphans is such a problem for these guys, they should just make a video response and tell us all about it.
And there is no department so called--Dept of State Security of the Bureau of Public of Security.
How can he get a department and a car without working?
And the department heads walking around in front of his window to think about the trouble they got.....what the hell a joke.
This can only cheat the ones oversea never lived in China and never met the police in China. Holy shit! They just earn money for this---google NED you will see him
1. She did go to university, so it's not unimaginable that she can write a few words in English.
2. You've either made a spelling mistake or you're referring to terms that aren't used in this documentary, because of course China has both a state security department AND a bureau of public security.
3. I don't understand what point you're trying to make.
4. Google NED, and then what?
If this is some sort of smear attempt, at least try not to base it on lies and distortions.
@fakkktome: It's typical for dictatorships to make foreigners or minorities responsible for serious problems of a society. For Hitler, it was the jews. For Stalin the Americans and for China, it's just the whole western world. As if we had nothing better to do than insulting you without any reason. Why can't you just admit that THERE ARE human rights violations by the Chinese government? Of course, you should love and defent your mother country and the people. But still, keep your eyes open!
Government and officials r corrupted but Maybe people r sleeping??? hey wakeup chinese people u dont need to know about human right if its too complicated for u n ur not used to with it..but atleast know dat the government is a civil servant who serves not bully u..Dont blame on West and his holiness the Dalai lama rememeber WHEN UR ONE FINGER IS POINTING SOMEONE..UR OTHER 3 FINGERS R ALWAYS POINTING AT U!!SO TRY TO CHANGE THE GOVERNMENT..DIS IS THE RIGHT ANSWER TO THE WEST..IF U HATE DEM!!
Please share these videos about Hu Jia with your friends. The Chinese people are beautiful, but many in the government are thugs who have been corrupted by power. These officials do not grant people basic human rights. Hu Jia is now in prison, separated from his wife and baby, for having a conscience and peacefully expressing an opinion.
Mention him in blogs. If you are traveling to China for the Olympics, bring pictures of Hu Jia. Ask your government to continue to plead for his release.
My heart aches. This brave man and woman are truly heroic. There needs to be moral outrage by many, especially those with the clout to change the fate of Hu Jia, sentenced to years in prison today! Let's give a shout.
Shame on the Government and on whoever is behind "Great Firewall" which prevents the rest of the world to see what actually happens in PRC. Freedom of speech and... thought(!) is the only way out :)
As despicable as the act is, making a phone call to a terrorist is not or should not be a crime.
You can't charge someone with talking about murdering someone. You shouldn't be able to arrest someone for talking about committing an act of terrorism.
Words are not a crime. Intent is not a crime. It's the act itself.
And frankly, if you're in this country, and someone's listening to your phone conversations, they'd better have a damn warrant.

the whole drama was planned by either TW separatists or some western China haters...'prison in freedom city' just sounds lame to me. China has a great progress on human rights. go there and see it yourself.
I don't ever want it to be legal for my government the chance to spy on me.
I am not worried that this administration will watch me. I am worried that three administrations from now, that some nut will fins an excuse to expand what is already happening now.
One of the prices of freedom is never giving up your civil rights, never putting up with a secretive government.
Because if we're going to be fascists, we might as well do it right.
I want you tried for all your immoral thoughts. I want to imprison you for the things you dream. Your intentions are enough to incriminate you. Your beliefs offend me and I want you removed from society.
How dare you willingly give up one small bit of freedom. Do you want your children and grandchildren to live in a world like this? It never happens all at once.
I'm afraid there's actually very little that any American president (or other foreign leader) can actually do to influence the behaviour of the Chinese government without resorting to sanctions. I am not advocating sanctions against the Chinese government, but I would like it if more people followed the example of Prince Charles and had as little to do with the government and its propaganda as is possible. Doing business is China is a seperate issue.
Friendly note to users like DalaiWu, you're not commenting into a vacuum here. If you want to talk racism or make groundless accusations, get your own space and leave the url here. Problem solved? No, Hu Jia is about to do a whole bunch of years in prison for blogging and without even being given access to a lawyer, and Zeng Jinyan and her daughter just spent Chinese New Year's eve trapped at home, guilty of nothing and cut off from the world.
Esp. stay away with Color Revolution groups, and some of foreign human right groups that Chinese government regards as hostile forces. Also like any group who promotes ethnic separation movements. An interesting thing--Jet Li is a Dalai Lama follower on religious ground, so he and many of others have no problem to attend Dalai Lama's session for religion. But if you involved in Tibet independence movement, that will be a different story. Continue.
At least Central Government is understand that NGOs, human right and green activists, are good for the country 1) by increasing people's participation in the political process; 2)by overseeing local official corruption; 3)by creating a social structure that help disadvantages groups. But only those activists are working toward to benefit the country and not subvert the country. One crucial element--keep your group independent out of foreign association that being regard as political. Continue.
I can put few words here too. If you have any issues, you need to blame Chinese intellecutrals. At mid of 1980s. Deng Xiaoping asked them to identify most critical issue of China if he wants a successful economic reform policy. The end report is stability. The past 250 years, China experienced big chaos every three years. Without stability, no thing can be built on. After 1989, and especially Russia's experience, Chinese--both people and government may be a little bit too sensitive on this. More
And in case you hadn't noticed, Zhao Ziyang spent the rest of his life after the Tiananmen square massacre under house arrest. This is how the CCP looks after those who are keen on political reform.

Every non-Chinese poster is a David Duke wannabe, and the descendant of an Opium War aggressor has not learned from history. Protecting our people from your racist attacks is both a gift and a curse. Most Chinese think that you people are cool with us. We need to interact more with people of color, so to really know what the West is about, especially the hypocrites here in the USA, who defend their racist garbage with freedom of speech. You are all disgusting human beings!
What part of what I wrote was racist? In what way is the fact that Britain had a war with China more than 150 years ago important? 你刚刚写的太没意思, 跟这片电影根本没有关系.
Really, one of the most depressing things about the expat community in China is the quickness with which so many seem to accept things in China as the natural state of affairs. It is amazing to meet people who (rightly in my opinion) disagree with the wanton disregard that he Bush and Blair governments have had towards human rights and then go around making excuses for the far greater wrongs inflicted by the Chinese government on its people.
I also find it incredible that any adult human being could write such a sentence as this: "At what point do people have the "right" to express their opinion?"
Please remember that the conditions in China are not as special as you seem to think. Once you accept that criticism can be silenced in China as it might impair economic growth then you are one step closer to accepting it in your own country.
@FOARP - This question was in response to an earlier post by DalaiWu who made the point that foreigners should not express their opinions about Chinese politics. I actually agree with you.
@Softrocker47 - Well, as a British man who spent six years living and working in China and who is fluent in Chinese I think what you have written is complete nonsense. There is nothing 'inevitable' about freedom, it can only be gained through struggle. It is also worth remembering that Communism is the cause of China's relative poverty compared to its neighbours. It is only in a totally criticism-free environment that allowed them to ruin China as they did.
@FOARP - Point taken. In America, you often hear the mantra, "Freedom is not free." (particularly from the Bush administration). It's possible that since I've grown up in a "free" society, I take it for granted. I assume many people have to struggle for their freedom. I guess this video is a good example.
People might already know this but this video has been blocked in China. I am in Beijing and was only able to see through a proxy.
What would happen if normal people living in China saw this? Would it threaten stability in China? Now that Chinese are experiencing a level of prosperity and stability not seen in most people's lifetimes, rocking the boat that keeps the country afloat (govt) might seem unnecessary.
That said, I sympathize with Hu Jia and Zeng Jinyan. You are both very courageous.
You have no business in Chinese affairs if you are not Chinese, especially if you are white or Japanese, for all the harm that you have done to China and Chinese people, whether that be inside or outside of China. That is racism. Just admit it and take off your hoods!
I am zhouzhzh. Thanks for replying my posters. However, I just found that I was blocked. And many of my posts were deleted. I will not be able to reply your comments any more. While I understand that Americans love to promote so-called "freedom of speech", you should also realize that it is just an American illusion. Everyone has incentives to ban the speech she does not like. There is no exception even in the U.S.
Join the culture, expect Chinese to respect you. Foreigners in China is rare. This is why people still treat "foreigners" as foreigners. U.S. has a huge foreign population and it has a mixed culture as well. After a few years, when foreigners are not foreign to Chinese people, things will change. Curious Chinese people should not be blamed for racism.
For example, do we not agree that American Indians, people from Iraq, and many others who were killed for no reason by American soldiers are unhappy with their treatment? Let Chinese to deal with their own business. Donot take you Americans as the most innocent people in the world.
On the contrary, all people must be interested in what happens in other countries. We learn about others and ourselves that way. Your arbitrary interdiction runs afoul of a long global history of cross-national writing and debate. I warmly invite you to pick our nits, too. Why do you think that would be offensive to us? We need nit-picking too, on occasion. I can direct you to some forums where you may do that, if you are not aware they exist.
But this is not an argument. You Chinese have an extremely narrow definition of what is Chinese. To you, Chinese is in appearance. One can be born in China, speak Chinese (like Pearl S. Buck) and will still never be Chinese. In a population with only ethnic, not racial, minorities, it is very easy and convenient to say multiracial societies are racist. And yet, because of your relative homogeneity, I, a foreigner, will never be treated with equality in China.
But someone who is born in China is not a guest. It is their homeland. And yet they are still not equal. This is not peculiar to China, it is a hallmark of Japanese society too, among others. I did not encounter a great understanding among Chinese of what racism is. although I did witness its practice. You continue to demonstrate this.
In any case, you assume that I am not Chinese simply by virtue of my residence outside of China. You have automatically relegated me to a Chinese guest, which I ought to be thankful for, and yet my country plays host to well over a million Chinese who are readily accepted as nationals and citizens. Who, then, is racist or imperial?
I think Cloudwulfe2 is following the conversation. Guests must be treated with respect. If a guest expresses an opinion, you do not bark them down. It is ridiculously rude to do so.
However the "guest" term is irrelevant to this debate. DalaiWu is trying to apply arbitrary boundaries to us.
The way the Chinese suppress their people is truly disgusting. This video proves it in spades. And consider, too, what the government of red China are doing to Tibet!
is this the country that will hold the Olympics Games? Don't go to China...they don't deserve it...why does the U.S and the Europeans countries allow this...free all political prisoners!!!
I've been trying to learn Mandarin out of curiosity, and was even considering visiting China, but the more I learn about China (pollution, lame politics, oppressive laws, etc.), the less interested I become. It seems like a sad place to go.
The best way to learn about China is to go experience it with an open mind, without expectations. To truly connect, language skills are a must (as they are in any culture). Good luck!
How can we raise more awareness of this, so that the presidential candidates are pressured to make their stands on this and to future incidents like this?

How will not visiting China in any way help the Chinese people? Do you want to punish the Chinese government or the Chinese people? The American approach to foreign politics often centers around the cessation of relations with those we disapprove--as if maintaining a relationship with them will legitimize their actions. We think that isolating those we don't agree with will punish the other into realizing the need to conform to our ideology. It simply isn't as effective as diplomacy.

It seems most Americans here are ignorant about Hu Jia's close ties with the CIA and the National Endowment for Democracy. In the USA, if a citizen conspires with a foreign intelligence agency trying to destabilize our government, we call it treason. Why should we expect China's government to react any differently.
SteveI72 3 years ago
How do you know??? If so, why dont the open court just make a fair judgement!?
Chinese people have been cheated for many years! Now, you want to dupe the western people.
Shame on u!
chengxin1988 3 years ago
The NED openly supports and funds the Chinese Democracy Movement as well as Reporters Without Borders. This isn't a secret, and all this information is publically available. Just do a little research. The western people that are being duped are the ones that unknowingly promote Western Imperialism and support the NED's efforts to destabilize the Chinese government. Make no mistake, the NED's intention isn't to bring democracy to China...it is to ensure that the USA remains the only superpower.
SteveI72 3 years ago

I greatly admire this brave man, but his methods backfire
slipspirit 3 years ago
So what his methods backfire.
At least he TRIED to do SOMETHING.
He is my hero anyway.
And look.So many people all over the world see his video.
renatasequoia 3 years ago
Yes, he did something. He got himself imprisoned while his wife and new baby struggle on without him now. I'm not criticizing his goals and ideals, but in China, one must work hard to change things without being so radical you get arrested or thrown out! It is a fine line. People who have never worked on sensitive issues in China don't know. How effective will he be now, out of action for 3 years! And with a wife and young child to care for. He is ill and may die in prison. What good is that?

As despicable as the act is, making a phone call to a terrorist is not or should not be a crime.
You can't charge someone with talking about murdering someone. You shouldn't be able to arrest someone for talking about committing an act of terrorism.
Words are not a crime. Intent is not a crime. It's the act itself.
And frankly, if you're in this country, and someone's listening to your phone conversations, they'd better have a damn warrant.

More

FOARP 4 years ago
I also find it incredible that any adult human being could write such a sentence as this: "At what point do people have the "right" to express their opinion?"
Please remember that the conditions in China are not as special as you seem to think. Once you accept that criticism can be silenced in China as it might impair economic growth then you are one step closer to accepting it in your own country.

@FOARP - This question was in response to an earlier post by DalaiWu who made the point that foreigners should not express their opinions about Chinese politics. I actually agree with you.
softrocker47 4 years ago
@Softrocker47 - Well, as a British man who spent six years living and working in China and who is fluent in Chinese I think what you have written is complete nonsense. There is nothing 'inevitable' about freedom, it can only be gained through struggle. It is also worth remembering that Communism is the cause of China's relative poverty compared to its neighbours. It is only in a totally criticism-free environment that allowed them to ruin China as they did.
FOARP 4 years ago
@FOARP - Point taken. In America, you often hear the mantra, "Freedom is not free." (particularly from the Bush administration). It's possible that since I've grown up in a "free" society, I take it for granted. I assume many people have to struggle for their freedom. I guess this video is a good example.
softrocker47 4 years ago
People might already know this but this video has been blocked in China. I am in Beijing and was only able to see through a proxy.
What would happen if normal people living in China saw this? Would it threaten stability in China? Now that Chinese are experiencing a level of prosperity and stability not seen in most people's lifetimes, rocking the boat that keeps the country afloat (govt) might seem unnecessary.
That said, I sympathize with Hu Jia and Zeng Jinyan. You are both very courageous.

But this is not an argument. You Chinese have an extremely narrow definition of what is Chinese. To you, Chinese is in appearance. One can be born in China, speak Chinese (like Pearl S. But someone who is born in China is not a guest. It is their homeland. And yet they are still not equal. This is not peculiar to China, it is a hallmark of Japanese society too, among others.
