Perhaps you should watch Mario at the London Palladium and note the position of the microphone. He also sang live at the Royal Albert Hall WITHOUT a microphone, and Dame Joan Sutherland and her husband were present, both were amazed at his voice.
Serch for Jussi Bjorling and listen to his version of Mattinata.
Bjorlings performance makes my point very clear of who truly is an opera-singer and who isn´t. In case you aren´t convinced, listen also to Bjorlings "Salut demeure ..." Recorded live television, no chanse for retakes.
No Tebaldi for me. If I wanted to hear a freight train I'd go down to the train station. But I will say I did like the rendition with Bjorling and his wife. I can see you're Swedish and it's understandable that you would like a Swedish tenor. It's also understandable that I'd prefer an Italian-American tenor like Lanza.
I understand your argument, but you also understand, that technique is what made him the legend that he is. To say there's no beauty in his voice is quite a statement. I cannot think of a tenor that had at his diposal more beautiful colors, or control of those colors than bjorling. Certainly not Lanza!
You people don't understand that Lanza and Bjorling were not tenors that should be compared. Bjorling was an Opera tenor and Lanza was a tenor who sang in the pictures, but could also sing opera damn well. There were things that Lanza could sing that Bjorling could not and vice-versa. I personally don't like Bjorling's accent in Italian singing, but he was a great tenor...
...No matter which way you put it I'd pick Lanza over Bjorling any day. I don't care how far he got in his opera career, he brought opera to more people (including me) through his movies than he would have singing in the opera.
@maxhansendk i would only offer that "mattinata" is not an operatic aria but a popular song. so, how can you use it to measure who is a "true" opera singer? bjorling simply does not know how to perform this song, which makes mario lanza the superior "popular" singer. lanza also was capable of performing opera as well as anyone else. why do we keep denying that even 50 years after his death? we have given that "crown" to bocelli (don't try to deny it). we just cannot admit we were wrong.
If you think this clip was enhanced then your either really retarded OR you just dont like the fact that Lanza had REAL talent and started with Hollywood instead of JUST bing an Opera singer. Face it, he had both THE voice and charisma. Jelousy, jelousy...
There are many (much more educated opera conneseurs) than me who simply regard mario lanza in the same categori as andrea bocelli.
Small voice-electronic wizardry = succes.
Im not questing his talent. He has a huge talent. He never developed that talent though...He belongs in the same category as Andrea Bocelli! Nice voice, pity it has to be amplified with several microfones...
Maxhansendk, first your grammar is horrible. Second, the best singers in the world are fans of Lanza. All of the 3 Tenors grew up listening to him and were inspired by him. Maria Callas said after he died: "My biggest regret is not to have had the opportunity to sing with the greatest tenor voice I've ever heard." Elvis Presley was a fan of his. When asked if he had a powerful voice, soprano Elaine Malbin (who recorded with him) said she was surprised at how powerful it really was...
.. If he did not have a powerful voice in the first place its obvious both RCA Victor and MGM would not have been interested in him at all. You can clearly tell by listening to live recordings of his that the voice is not amplified at all. I could only imagine how distorted an amplified record would have been back then with the primitive recording technology, and Lanza's first recordings are clearly not distorted...
From what I can tell, maxhansendk, you are someone who thinks you know what you're talking about and you don't. I suggest not commenting anymore because clearly you know nothing and nobody agrees with you.

English is not my native language, so there will inevitly be some incorrect spelling and perhaps even mistakes with grammar...
I think I can make myself understood though, and that´s what counts - or!?
Mario Lanza is very low rated by a majority of opera-experts. He belongs in the same category as Bocelli.
You are of course entitled to like Lanza as well as people like many other poor singers like Madonna or Bruce Springsteen.

Maxhansendk - You are clearly saying those stupid things just to aggravate. Why don't you just stop. Quit making yourself look so foolish.

Bjorling? A good tenor, but too much technique, no beauty in his voice, not dramatic at all and bad pronunciation for Italian singing. Forget it.

Try too listen to this instead Bondobondo if you want drama:
search for Bjorling Tebaldi O soave fanciulla
Tebaldi and Bjorling are at the height of their vocal powers.

Eh, someone ever heard of Hollywood? ;-)
They make movies with sound, (lol) and of course have sound engineers and technical equipment to enchance vocal performance.
I guess you didn´t know that, uh?
