My respect for this musicians/percussionist, Phil Collins an absolute musician, he worked his drum set firely with Genesis, and created with Peter Gabriel one of the best progressive rock bands and albums in the world. He destroyed his drum set with the super jazz-fusion band Brank X, Composer and singer, great albums as soloist. He surely can die in peace..and Chester Thompson well, the fact that que worked his drum set with Frank fuckin Zappa is speechless, this is a seriously drum jam¡

@TedHirdes I saw a special not long ago where he and other musicians were duplicating the old Motown sound. Not the same as a tour, but a wonderful television performance. At least Phil hasn't totally "ended" his singing career.

He might not tour anymore or produce any new albums, but he'll never ever stop singing and drumming, with all the injuries he has. It's too big of a part of him. Really... to compare musicians is so obtuse and ignorant. Each plays the way each plays. Phil Collins is an amazingly remarkable drummer (plus a complete musician... he sings plays many instruments, writes, composes, produces).

Comparing him with Chester (another incredible drummer) is like comparing a Ferrari with a Lamborghini. C'mon people... really!

@dezzy584 That's Chester Thompson. He did play with Genesis when Phil would come out front for vocals duty. But Chester also played with Frank Zappa in the early '70s. Chester's quite a bit better than ol' Phil, but they're both pretty good drummers.

Phil Collins music is like that old book that you loved to read when you were young(er) and you go back and pick it back up and it's just as much fun now as it was then. It was years before I realized or found out that Phil was a world class drummer. Some people get blown away by guitar riffs, others by sax or piano, for me it's the drums. I'll take the drum solo in In a gada da vida or any drum solo that's got life in it like this over any pop song du jour any day of the week.

I will always admire Phil for one thing: his humility. Being one of the best drummers in the world (and no one will deny this) he accepted that someone else could play most of the drum part for Genesis. Of course, He choose an exceptionnal drummer (Chester Thomspon) to do it but that must have been a very hard step to take.
