Why is so hard to get a hang drum?

As far as the original makers go (felix and Sabina) they are only able to make 2 a day, these are all hand tunes and is very labour intensive, normally they make 2 a day over a 3-4 month period and spend the rest of the year r&d, however this year they have decided to take a year out for a breather , so with the popularity of the instrument being so high you can understand that only a few can be made, you cant rush perfection! :)

There are only two people who make Hanghang, the inventors Felix Rohner and Sabina Schärer. They have a little workshop in Berne where every Hang in existence was made. Since 2006 the Hang Makers do not ship instruments directly nor do they sell them through any retailers. To obtain a Hang prospective customers must send a letter to request an invitation to the workshop in Berne.

You have to write to the makers in Switzerland. They will put you on  a waiting list. The drums cost $1500 each and are not mass produced but made to order. You should be able to get the address just by googling buy hang drum if you're feeling rich and patient!!!!!

Jimi, most of your information is correct, but as for color, it comes as a standard black and bronze due to the oxidising process, and yes music knowlege is for everyone, hence the reason Sabina and Felix have publicly desplayed the methods, and metals used to create this instrument, but just like Einstein, no-one has managed to replicate their skills, but people are trying.

and as far as number of notes and tones, they stopped that about 2-3 years ago now, as far as i understand i had one of the last custom tunings before they changed the metals and a standard tuning of D. Only 2 are made each day for only a couple of months and most of the money that is made goes back into research and development, so as far as people thinking they are rich is quite a myth.

They are happy for people to replicate the hang as they know they will have no shortage of orders, . these guys are geniuses when it comes to metal tuning! and have shared their knowlege freely, you just have to look and find it, which in this day and age is a rare thing especially with something as awesome as this to share their knowlege openly! People have tried to replicate the hang through laser and machine without success.

Tuning is primarily done with sand tuning. Sand is placed around the tuning spots and a hammer is used to tune the note into required frequency, every frequency resinates the sand into its own unique shape, so to speak.

In other words they sit there all day with ear guards watching a monitor and the sand hammering each note into tune.Imagine how psychologicaly testing that is, to sit there all day just tapping watching a frequency monitor. They love you guys and want you to have the best and not something that is alsmost there!

So maybe you can now understand a little why there are so few hang out there and so few produced. Pure love and dedicatiion go into each and every UNIQUE instument, every Hang is like a thumb print,

as much as they go on there own techniques they also use artistic freedom to add a little of there own creation to each hang. They could easily charge 5,000 euros for this instument and still have orders for years to come but want something that is still in reach of most peple to get,

So far there is no other way to get it.

When you arrive in that village in (Sw),you order the features of your hang(color,tuning,number of notes&harmonies) and wait at least for one day at their residence(kind of motel)!!!

Very good question!!! Veeeery unfortunately it is very difficult to get a hang drum. As i know, you have to go to Berna,Svizzera and visit the constructor's place. But you can go only after sending a letter with the request! If they reply to you, they will give you an appointment and you can go only in that date. Ah..it costs about 1000€ I'm not joking! It's very expensive damn! :(
