@broxboy86 the melodies are usually different for every station. They are usually famous short classical songs on an electronic keyboard sound, but some time they are just made up
At the 2:43, you can hear a part of historical melody - a nursery rhyme known as "Tetsudo Shoka(A song of Train; Tokaido Line from Tokyo to Kobe Version").
The song was made for the purpose of asudying about the geological features ando about the noted places of Tokaido Line.
Hey... I never realised these were played by the guard pressing a switch on the platform. And I've only been on the Yamanote line, so some new melodies here. Thanks for posting!
Such an excellent idea to have these jingles. They alert you to what station you are at (e.g. if the car is filled with people and you can't see, you can hear the familiar jingle and you know). Also, they tell you how much time you have until the train closes its doors.
"They alert you to what station you are at (e.g. if the car is filled with people and you can't see, you can hear the familiar jingle and you know)"
Ah, but only a few stations have their own unique melodies, and the trains themselves have announcements and some have LED displays to tell you what the next station will be. But they are indeed great!
Yamanote line. Yay! Going to Japan in April and then taking the Yamanote line to Harajuku station :3

I am japanese.
I'm sorry when wrong.
Shinagawa station is near Tokyostation and Haneda Airport.
The JR melody of Ebisu is said, "DAISAN NO OTOKO"(It`s mean Third party's man).
This tune was adopted because there is a company that makes the third category beer for near.
Thank you.
(1:13 Oh! It is a series of 209 from which it retired last year.)

FYI, there are CDs of JR station melodies available on Amazon Japan's website. I've bought a couple. They make great cell phone ringtones!

Can anybody tell me if there is a name to the chime that sounds at 1:08 - one that normally sounds before an announcement. Thanks.

So the box that the conductor presses is what causes the sounds to play? I thought they were on the trains themselves.

Japan's train system is far more advanced than ours. We love our cars too much
