Back in the day, they used to show all kinds of kids shows, cartoons in the afternoon and OLD movies at night, and on weekends.Creature Double Feature, Movie for a Sunday Afternoon, etc. That all went away in the late 80's when local programming requirements were cut back, and infomercials were more profitable(such as all of much of Saturday) and, movie rental fees went into the stratosphere, even for the old ones.
I SO miss WLVI. Banana Splits, Monkees, Creature Double Feature, the classic cartoons, 8 O'Clock Movie, etc. All those old commercials from the Boston-area places (NE Aquarium, ITT Tech, Museum of Science). Nowadays it's all generic cable crap. Give me the old independent stations back any day, please!!!
OMG The Palace! lol By the time I got to high school it was the Bahama Beach Club--what a dive! It was truly the epitome of a cheesy under 21 "dance party"
Two of the best stations ever. WLVI and WSBK Boston. What I wouldn't do to go back in time and tape weeks of those broadcast. Sadly even the stations themselves didn't save many of the footage.
"L-V-I! Is paa-art of lii-iving!"... Wow, I had those jingles ringing in my head all the time as a kid! It's sad to see how homogenized Boston has become with the rest of the United States - you can barely find candlepin bowling alleys within city limits nowadays, let alone broadcasts that aren't nationally syndicated. Leave me my Kid Tips, Movie Loft, and local hosts!
This was a decade before Uma Pemmaraju first appeared on Fox News Channel (she left FNC in 1999 but returned in 2003). I know that Uma later worked at WBZ before first joining FNC.
Anybody From my generation[generation x]who grew up in new england in the 80's remembers all the great old cartoons 56 and 38 used to show.its hard to believe that they dont really have saturday mornings cartoons anymore.I remember their used to be cartoons on in the morning before school and after school.Mighty Mouse,The Jetsons,The Flintstones,Tom and Jerry, etc. Its too bad todays childrens programming makes no sense.
@wyattjameson amen, to that even basc television had something good on in the mornings and afternoons and especially on saturday mornings, I grew up in a town without cable but even then there was more interesting shows on. now if you want to see anything really good you have to pay the extra money to get cable or sat that is if you don't have a computer connected to the web.
Damn! I can't believe I stumbled upon this by accident, I remember some of these commercials. Channel 56 was the best channel when I was a kid. Thanks for posting this!
I remember when cable companies actually gave access to most of the UHF stations in New England. I remember watching WSBK 38 and WLVI 56 for the first half of my life. We lost those channels sometime in the mid 90s.
Do you live in Rhode Island. Thats where I live and thats what happened around here. I actualy used to unplug my cable box sometimes just so i could watch the 3 stooges on the weekends on 38
I lived in Providence then. It's all we had. 64 really wasn't around, but for a brief time , and then eventually got by FOX :( It's good seeing this clip, 56 was the best at the time. No cable . 38 also ruled. There are no independant channels to choose from. It's all cable or sattilite now.
These commercials bring back alot of memories. I remember I used to have my mother call me into the house at 4:00 to watch Transformers on 56 and then GI Joe at 4:30. I remember the Monkeys were on too, I just forget what time. Maybe after the Brady Bunch?
yea they used to have Casper, Mighty Mouse and many more cartoons even Yogi Bear once upon a time. That was when i loved watching that channel. I remember these commorcials too, that was much later. I was born in 1971. So for cartoons we had 25, 56, and 38. Nowadays they are Fox, the CW , and MYTV. I miss the indenpendant channels now.
no....a few years for this they were known as the kids' choice. "Here in Boston , The Kids Choice is...Channel 56..." that was the tag. I miss those years
well it was before 1986. try maybe late 70's to early 80's. 1986 it was crap by then and shortly after that independent channels were no longer independent.
i'm 30 i wasn't around then, but where i'm from we have at least 7 inde's local government, education, public accesss. so i hate to disagree with yet another perosn but thier are still some around, and of-course 56 is now CW, at least PBS still has some thunger
I wish you were. 56 was a much better channel. It's now CW or whatever. In the Providence Boston area now its all the same structure now. Back then it was much better. 38 is now MyTV 25 is now FOX, and even 64 is FOX and channel 12 sister channel. Digital TV coming in the picture gives more choice which I'm Happy that Retro channel has lots of shows i remember, just not the cartoons.
that is the chick that went on to fox news

I remember growing up in my youth. This was one of my favorite channels back before Cartoon Network was first concieved.
I used to wake up, go to school and watch 56 every day. Nowadays, 56 is still something to watch with CW4Kids, but I sure miss the old days.

Oh God, they ran this commercial for the MadBash at the Palace EVERY DAY FOR A YEAR.
I think they were still running it after it actually happened.
