Joinchoir is more than my screen name, it's my philosophy of life. We all know geeky kids grow up to be the leaders in the world, why not encourage them with music they can relate to and enjoy?

However, for geeky kids choir may be the only experience in their school lives where athletes, cheerleaders, and any other typically cool or popular kids will find them valuable and make them feel accepted. Choir is of valuable to socially well adjusted kids but for geeks it can be truly life changing. This was certainly my experience and is what got me into the profession.

@AndrewDangerously I diagree. It may be a problem with definition here. There are gamers that have it all going on socially. There are plenty of choir and theater "geeks" that have a social network of friends that is all inclusive. It has been my experience that there are often extremely bright kids that are less able to perceive the social cues others take for granted. These kids can feel less appreciated. Choir can give them a place of value and belonging. 100% respect

@jjl2357 In high school it is often the case that the freshman or beginning level choir includes students like that and we directors are glad to have them. We try to help them see the value of being a community where all are valued. Sometimes you have to put up with the same issues you have in beginning level classes in other subjects to make it through to the more mature and higher level performing groups. Auditioned choirs help nurture respect for ability. I enjoy teaching both levels.
