Actually, Car & Track showed this race in one of their programs, which was later done by SpeedVision. It was the only time in the years that the program was done (at least in the episodes that SpeedVision did) that a death was mentioned in the program. Of course, in one of the last races that aired on the Car & Track show, Randy Owens was killed in the water tank explosion late in the 1975 Winston 500 at Talladega, but the death was never mentioned, only that "two people were injured".
I am so very sad after the Dan Wheldon crash, reminded me of the day I witnessed the Ronnie Duman crash as a kid. Have been a race fan all my life, so sad when tragedies like this happen. I was sitting in the bleachers just after the entrance to the south turn with my Mom and Dad for this race. The crash happened right in front of me. Very traumatic for a kid, I was 13 years old, that crash is ingrained in my memory forever. RIP Dan Wheldon and Ronnie Duman.
