I enjoy this the added tension isn't unbearable to me (no sound is really unbearable to me, i enjoy the way sounds tickle my ears) it adds more intrigue for me, it has an effect i cant find in consonant music (just as consonant music has an effect i can't find in dissonant music)
Also, a teacher's job is a objective i certainly hope you aren't imposing your unasked for opinion on your students teachers can be very influential on students and you could be closing doors now that would open tomorrow.
you do not regard dissonant harmony or long and dissonant melodies or themes as harmony melodies and themes ? I enjoy constanant harmonies as much as the next guy i do not reject old standards (mozart and haydn are great), however, i do believe that all information on a matter should be offered to students.
Do you consider the Petrushka chord good? Well this is comparible to that and normal people who listen to things instead of looking are usually smart enough to not like this.
Paul Hindemith was one of americas greatest modern composers and he was very anti-shoenberg as well as all the other revolutionaries of the 20th century. My point is while i'd live to lash out mr greifenhagen15 for not sharing my perspective he has every right to have an opinion and that doesnt make him and more or less of a knowledgeable musician.
"The Austrian-born composer Arnold Schoenberg is credited with the invention of this technique, although other composers (e.g., the American composer Charles Ives and the Austrian Josef Hauer) anticipated Schoenbergs invention by writing music that in a few respects was similar technically to his 12-tone music." ("12-tone music -- Britannica Online Encyclopedia.") you have 12 tone and serial music mixed up or maybe 12 tone and chromaticism.
this is absolutely terrible. I dont know why schoenberg wasted his life composing stuff like this. No one will ever respect him except for retards. His music is comparable to a cat being tortured. I feel sorry for the people who have to play this shit.
well kind sir, if no one ever attempted anything different and outside the norm, we'd still be beating on rocks with sticks and calling music...it may not be to your liking but at least respect his willingness to experiment
By you? Probably not... But people that really understand music and why atonal music has character and why it is good DO respect him and his music. If you do not study music or theory there is no real way for you to understand what makes atonal music respectable or worth listening to. Furthermore, I don't really understand the point of viewing a piece of atonal music just to criticize Shoenberg.
I'm actually a theory teacher at a conservatory with my ARCT. So I do study theory. Anyway, I judge on how good a piece is by how much it makes my ears hurt and that my friend is why this is awful.
And to answer your comment I listen to this so I can be more diverse with my compositions.
I really enjoy Shoenberg and was really excited when I learned about 12 tone music. This piece is no exception, it's wonderful...just like to know why it's called "Sex Machine".
I'm not sure I'd know what a sex machine was even if I fell over one, with James Brown being a possible exception were he still alive hehe. But this is an interesting piece musically.

You're all very good musicians, but as for the material, I'd like to see your talents applied to music with more vision. The experiment which Arnold Schoenberg started is rapidly drawing to a close, and the classical world is finally finding it's way back to the real roots of music, which are of course harmony and melody, and the full range of human emotions, including the positive ones. Composers such as Golijov, Yusupov, and Part are showing us the way back to the roots of this great tradition
the "roots of music" probably lie much more with rhythmic variation and have very little to do with harmony and melody, the former not being expanded on until the middle ages, the latter with the greeks as earliest recorded. also, beauty doesn't equal vision, and the "experiment" is still being taught in universities as early serialists conceived it. if you don't understand it, don't bash it.
Yes, as from the middle ages and the troubadours this great lyrical tradition began it's upward journey of ever more sophisticated expression. Let's hope that in the 21st century we don't see a descent back into the primitivism of tribal rhythms or even worse an inhuman style of maths as music, with little regard for what intuitively delights the human ear and nurtures the finer emotions.
Good stuff - but it doesn't have much to do with "Sex Machine", and it's more an imitation of Schoenberg's pre-serial work, at least to my ears. Still, I like it very much. Can I get a recording of it?

is this music about how ur shit go thru ur ass when taking a crap? shit I'm sorry dont understand a shit about it, and why do I have to make such an effort to understand such a crappy composer when Mozart is so breathtaking beautyful.
^^ u dont really sound like the person who likes anything but rap and R & B, how can you call mozart beautiful (spelt wrong) if you use such obscene laungage?
Wow. I liked it. Moew Webern like to me.Later schoenberg. Not dense almost flowery for expressionist music. Lanman -I will have to look into .i like this very much .
I thought that this sounded too freakin' tonal to be Shoenberg, so I checked it out, and it's actually a peice CALLED "Shoenberg Sex Machine" by Tony Lanman.
It's okay, not everybody can have a good taste in music :)

this song was not written by Arnold Shoenberg it was just titled "The Shoenberg sex machine" in honor of his invention of the 12 tone technique

Good music and art are rarely enjoyed by the simple minded. They can only scoff and beg for something commercial to listen to.

when you experiment, you should still use things that sound good. it sounds like he was inspired by dying things.

I dont think there is even a possibility of a remote fragment that even nears a chance that schoenbergs music will ever be respected.

It's interesting that you know enough to TEACH theory but can't respect Shoenberg... Don't ruin your students.
MinisterofScissors 2 years ago
Don't worry Schoenberg already did that for me! Anyway, I'm really sorry if you and I don't agree, but everyone has opinions.
greifenhagen15 2 years ago
I have one question. Do you like Brahms or Mozart?
P.S. thank you for the advice but I show it to my students anyway and if they like it they are free to listen to schoenberg anytime they want.
greifenhagen15 2 years ago
I have an appreciation for classical music and certainly a lot of respect for many composers including Brahms and Mozart.
I find 12 music, polytonality and the more contemporary experimentation to be more interesting, though.
Why do you ask?
MinisterofScissors 2 years ago
i was just wondering if you appreciated the roots of this.
