I've read that though this is a british production - its never been shown on british tv... I mean wtf? THIS IS HILARIOUS! I watch this every new years eve, since swedish tv (and lots of other countires) actually show this on december 31st every year...
Tbh I dont think it would have been very successful in the UK, British sense of humour as a whole is abit different to this, this is a very slapstick act and as a whole British comedys are far more witty in my opinion (not meant nasty) =P I personally didnt laugh once at this =S
@LeiaAlexis yeah, but I guess since I grew up watching this, I must've laughed everytime he tripped or something (kid humor) and when he gets more drunk, I still think is hilarious.. lol
@McFlyLover92 lol well thats fair enough :) I was bought up watching all the old British comedys like Only Fools and Horses, Some Mothers Do ave 'em and Man about the House etc so I think theyre awesome! :) This for me is abit repetitive (the tripping over the Tiger bored me after the 2nd time he tripped) if that makes sense but for many people they find it funny :)
@Jongo71 The Economist (Jan 2012) said this is something Germans watch but is forgotten in the UK. So I searched and watched here. It seems ordinary, unremarkable humour. But that makes it more fascinating that it has so many German and Nordic fans. Do they enjoy the British stereotypical mistress-servant culture? Would it be funny if they re-did the sketch in their own culture in their languages?
I came to see this video, because of the BBC article on their news website. The sketch is not too bad and it does have its funny moments, especially when the butler was trying to serve the drink and instead just throws it onto the glass, which was quite funny, especially the way he did it. I guess its one of those things, that an English comedy sketch becomes popular in northern Europe, but not in the UK itself. But overall it wasn't too bad, it wouldn't make you laugh loud, but u would giggle
i kind of missed the funny part sorry, but was fascinated by the tradition aspect. It's interesting that the most well known version of the german sketch is a version with british actors, although clearly the humour is germanic (ie absurd repetition) So i guess it's confusing for a person like mr angloscot that this sketch is taking the p__ out of (as well as inspired by)Brits.however it s clearly germanic cabaret from the 30's , with british actors. now apologize to those kind teutonic people.
@izaakimagery1978 So, you kind of missed the funny part? The whole thing is funny, you prick. It is not a German sketch. It is merely popular in Germany and elsewhere in Northern Europe. You embrace ignorance when you assume that all Teutonic people are kind. They are not all kind and neither are we. Your ludicrous remark shows you up to be an arsehole.
@izaakimagery1978 I think Freddie Frinton wouldn't be pleased to call his sketch a Germanic cabaret. This sketch was his invention and he toured with May Warden (the old lady) on different stages before German TV discovered them. Before this TV production Frinton never visited Germany because of his war experiences in WW2 in Germany.
i watch it every year on new years eve, which is my birthday, too, with my family, and this is the first time i watch it alone&on youtube... happy new year, everyone.
its one of the greatest sketches ever made. its a shame the generations of today dont apreceiate these kind of things. love it :) merry christmas, & a awsomw new year.
@cyb3rf3nix Yeah, the only things generations of these days appreciate is iPads, Justin Bieber haircuts, drugs and being 'cool'. It's full of that vermin at my university.
Terranuss, you need more lessons on your English grammar. Your punctuation is also poor, as is your understanding, your sense of humour and the German world war record. However, your bratwurst is excellent, especially when grilled and topped with mustard, and your football is currently better than ours. Keep smiling and learn to appreciate the truth that this sketch is British. It may be difficult for you but try not be jealous. Is it because of the Eurozone crisis?
It may only be an annual tradition to you, my Teutonic friends, but this comic sketch, its writer and its actors are all British. There is no German involved. Remember Benny Hill? Yes, that's right - he was another British actor and comedian who was, and still is, very popular in your country. It's a pity that you haven't mastered humour yourselves. However, please continue to enjoy our gift to you in the same way that you and your families have been doing for the last 48 years.
@0x28 Well, well, the fairy has finally come down off the Christmas tree. You try to talk 'tough' on your computer but you're not going to be doing any punching, are you, you cowardly ponce? Actually, I was defending this British sketch against German smugness and the German pretence that they owned and even created it. Go back to your boyfriend and have a good cry, you fucking drip.
@angloscot42 Hey come a bit down of your germanophobia. This version here btw is the Swiss version which also spread to the Scandinavian countries. This sketch has become popular in more than dozen countries and is a firm part of New Year's eve. Without German and Swiss TV this brilliant sketch would be long forgotten today.
dude i watched this at school when german kids visited dude i was crackin the fuck up when he aimed and shoot the wine across the table i was dyin tooo funny
First heard about this show from my Danish friends while spending New Year hols with them in Denmark over ten years ago. They were very surprised that I didn't know anything about the programme and made sure I watched it there. Lovely to see again, thanks for uploading.
@SpiritualSuicides It's just turned into a custom in some countries, like Germany. Every New Year's it's screened in tv since 1972 and until 2 years ago I've watched it regulary too :) Watching it now to catch up.
@LarsiHelsinki he sketch was written byBritish author Lauri Wylie in the 1920'sIn 1962, German entertainer Peter Frankenfeld and director Heinz Dunkhase discovered Dinner for One in Blackpool.. It was first shown on German TV. But this clip featuring British comedians Freddie Frinton and May Warden s as close as you will get to the original 1920's theatre production. There were many versions recorded for all over the world, but the first TV show was in Germany
Ein Silvester ohne Dinner for one? Kann ich mir nicht vorstellen, das ist einfach Kult... Ich seh es mir jedes Jahr an. Tja, was soll ich sagen? The same producer as every year ;-)
ich finds nach ein paar jahren ein bischen langweilig weil man es schon auswendig mitsprechen kann aber immer noch lustig vorallem wenn er sich wunder wieso er gestolpert ist
Actually, it's not the original version, it's the swiss version, which was broadcasted the same year as this. But the original is a bit longer and there are more proper sets and more jokes.
But in fact, Freddie Frinton was changing this sketch ever and ever.
@mpcoo50 That makes me wonder, out of curiousity, were Mr.james actually drinking any liquor under this shoot? At any rate, he does well to stay in character ^^
@mpcoo50 I haven't seen this for years and years. But it came up in conversation with a friend in Vienna who tells me it is played on Austrian TV every year at Christmas time. Without fail. I had to look it up to see what he was talking about.
@mpcoo50 Your Grandad was awesome! This wee sketch is a must on hogmanay in Germany...has been for 40-odd years..there was a national outcry when they wouldn't televise it one year...dinner for one and Sylvester....synonymous in Germany!
We can discuss which of the both variations is the "original". Well, the other recording is much better known to the germans, cause it repeats every new years eve since more than 30 years or more in the NDR a german programme. This one isn't bad or something, it's just different ... but the same procedure!!! Cheerioo ...
After reading some stuff about this on IMDB, let me see if I've got this straight: Some people say that this is NOT the original version, because the original was made in Germany. But apparently the Germans hired British actors to do the skit on German TV, and it was agreed that they'd do it in English. So I'm guessing this really is the original. (Also, apparently the original skit IS English, & was performed on stage long before the TV version.)
@TroyOi OK, sorry, now I see that this is indeed NOT the original. But it does feature the same cast as the original. Again, please set me straight if I'm incorrect in that.
@TroyOi I think so... I saw this for the first time when I was visiting family in Berlin and what you have written makes sense because this has always been in English.
@TroyOi Not quite. In fact there are two original versions, one produced by German TV and one produced by Swiss TV in the same year. Roughly said, the German version is the one with an introduction speaker and a white tablecloth, the Swiss version has no introduction speaker and no tablecloth. The actors, the texts, the procedures are the same in both versions. These are the earliest TV adaptions. Every following screenplay, theater, sketch etc. has been derived from this sketch.
Whilst in South Africa, come every New Year's eve, SABC used to broadcast this clip without fail. It was a N Y tradition, Then I had a friend from Germany who mentioned this and said that it was their tradition, and I watched it with my husband who never saw it before, and of all places, we watched it in Saudi Arabia. Since then I wanted a copy, but never got it, so I searched for it on YT, and this is now my and my husband's tradition, going to be anyways!! I love it, love it, !!! cHEERS!
This was Phase 1 of the British-led NATO exercise "Operation Give the Germans a Sense of Humour".
Yet they keep on watching it year after year- and other Europeans followed their lead. Why?

Please help this ignorant Yank: Am I right??

I love it, love it, !!! cHEERS!
