  • This was Phase 1 of the British-led NATO exercise "Operation Give the Germans a Sense of Humour".

Yet they keep on watching it year after year- and other Europeans followed their lead. Why?

  • I've read that though this is a british production - its never been shown on british tv... I mean wtf? THIS IS HILARIOUS! I watch this every new years eve, since swedish tv (and lots of other countires) actually show this on december 31st every year...

  • Tbh I dont think it would have been very successful in the UK, British sense of humour as a whole is abit different to this, this is a very slapstick act and as a whole British comedys are far more witty in my opinion (not meant nasty) =P I personally didnt laugh once at this =S

  • @LeiaAlexis yeah, but I guess since I grew up watching this, I must've laughed everytime he tripped or something (kid humor) and when he gets more drunk, I still think is hilarious.. lol

  • @McFlyLover92 lol well thats fair enough :) I was bought up watching all the old British comedys like Only Fools and Horses, Some Mothers Do ave 'em and Man about the House etc so I think theyre awesome! :) This for me is abit repetitive (the tripping over the Tiger bored me after the 2nd time he tripped) if that makes sense but for many people they find it funny :)

  • @LeiaAlexis completely agree

  • so sick ! :D

  • Seems really strange that despite being forty and living in Britain all my life - I and everyone I know has never seen this clip.

  • @Jongo71 The Economist (Jan 2012) said this is something Germans watch but is forgotten in the UK. So I searched and watched here. It seems ordinary, unremarkable humour. But that makes it more fascinating that it has so many German and Nordic fans. Do they enjoy the British stereotypical mistress-servant culture? Would it be funny if they re-did the sketch in their own culture in their languages?

  • CO ROKU I ZAWSZE WESOLE SWEDEN KALINKA

  • God - to watch him get so drunk so quickly - it's too close to the bone for me!

  • I came to see this video, because of the BBC article on their news website. The sketch is not too bad and it does have its funny moments, especially when the butler was trying to serve the drink and instead just throws it onto the glass, which was quite funny, especially the way he did it. I guess its one of those things, that an English comedy sketch becomes popular in northern Europe, but not in the UK itself. But overall it wasn't too bad, it wouldn't make you laugh loud, but u would giggle

  • OMG THIS IS SO FUNNY!! I LOVE IT!! :'-))

  • I love it

  • i kind of missed the funny part sorry, but was fascinated by the tradition aspect. It's interesting that the most well known version of the german sketch is a version with british actors, although clearly the humour is germanic (ie absurd repetition) So i guess it's confusing for a person like mr angloscot that this sketch is taking the p__ out of (as well as inspired by)Brits.however it s clearly germanic cabaret from the 30's , with british actors. now apologize to those kind teutonic people.

  • @izaakimagery1978 So, you kind of missed the funny part? The whole thing is funny, you prick. It is not a German sketch. It is merely popular in Germany and elsewhere in Northern Europe. You embrace ignorance when you assume that all Teutonic people are kind. They are not all kind and neither are we. Your ludicrous remark shows you up to be an arsehole.

  • Comment removed

  • @angloscot42 no it doesnt. it just shows you like to swear and find any reason to do so. I don't so i will leave you alone with your friends.

  • @izaakimagery1978 Pathetic. Run along now, ignoramus. Well done for admitting that you got your facts totally wrong. Treat yourself to a lollipop.

  • @izaakimagery1978 I think Freddie Frinton wouldn't be pleased to call his sketch a Germanic cabaret. This sketch was his invention and he toured with May Warden (the old lady) on different stages before German TV discovered them. Before this TV production Frinton never visited Germany because of his war experiences in WW2 in Germany.

  • @tubi333 You are right, i thought i was a twenties german thing, but it's british. Best check facts before I write anything on the internets. ;)

  • i watch it every year on new years eve, which is my birthday, too, with my family, and this is the first time i watch it alone&on youtube... happy new year, everyone.

  • @Blaubommel Happy Birthday!

  • halhlailraolala

  • Ich lach jedesmal!

Ich liebe es, an Silvester komtm es in der Schweiz.

    Thanks for upload

    Danke fürs Hochladen

  • Gotta love dinner for one!

  • Has been, and is still broadcast EVERY year at Christmas, on German Television. H.

  • "The same procedure as last year Ms Sophie? The same procedure as every year James"

  • thanks for uploading, i'm abroad this semester and otherwise couldn't watch this with my friends this new year's eve! :D

  • I used to watch this ... but why?

  • Happy new Years. ;))) Smiley.

  • thumbs up if you are norwegian and watch this every year :)

  • Why do i hate norwegians that are allowed to post on the internet?

  • @Parodiaz I'm from Norway :3

  • @Parodiaz Why does Norwegian people hate people like you on the internet?

  • yes we do, but also the old generation too... its been on norwegian tv since 1980 and now we just watched it again.... every 23 th of december :)

  • in norway this is named "grevinnen og håvmesteren" in english: the Countess and the server

  • @Runder28 Hovmesteren*

  • @Runder28 the butler and the countess :)

  • @Runder28 hovmesteren* stav riktig

  • yes..it is greta!!))

  • its one of the greatest sketches ever made. its a shame the generations of today dont apreceiate these kind of things. love it :) merry christmas, & a awsomw new year.

  • @cyb3rf3nix Hey! I think most teenagers in Norway watch this every year, 23th December. At least most i know.

  • @WEIRDNGEEKY Same in Denmark!

  • @TheRealDoubleH And Sweden! :)

  • @TheRealDoubleH

In Denmark its the other version

  • @cyb3rf3nix Yeah, the only things generations of these days appreciate is iPads, Justin Bieber haircuts, drugs and being 'cool'. It's full of that vermin at my university.

  • It is a great play -I can`t see it often enough! Greets from Freiburg!

  • das ist legende

wer das nicht mag der hat keinen humor

  • Thanks and Happy Christmas

  • just funny every year, again... same procedure as every year it is tradition :-)

  • Terranuss, you need more lessons on your English grammar. Your punctuation is also poor, as is your understanding, your sense of humour and the German world war record. However, your bratwurst is excellent, especially when grilled and topped with mustard, and your football is currently better than ours. Keep smiling and learn to appreciate the truth that this sketch is British. It may be difficult for you but try not be jealous. Is it because of the Eurozone crisis?

  • @angloscot42 You arrogant fuck.

  • It may only be an annual tradition to you, my Teutonic friends, but this comic sketch, its writer and its actors are all British. There is no German involved. Remember Benny Hill? Yes, that's right - he was another British actor and comedian who was, and still is, very popular in your country. It's a pity that you haven't mastered humour yourselves. However, please continue to enjoy our gift to you in the same way that you and your families have been doing for the last 48 years.

  • @angloscot42 of course you couldnt write that with your typical piece of arrogance, or was is just typical British irony ?....

  • @angloscot42 You are as boring as an old dusty spoon. Someone should go punch you right in the face for being such a pompous twat.

  • @0x28 Well, well, the fairy has finally come down off the Christmas tree. You try to talk 'tough' on your computer but you're not going to be doing any punching, are you, you cowardly ponce? Actually, I was defending this British sketch against German smugness and the German pretence that they owned and even created it. Go back to your boyfriend and have a good cry, you fucking drip.

  • @angloscot42 Hahaha I was just fucking around with you.

  • @angloscot42 Perhaps some day Britain will build a car worth driving.

  • @RManFlint Try an Aston Martin, or is it out of your budget?

  • @angloscot42 I've got a tractor. Maybe we can try to pull that pin out of your ass.

  • @angloscot42 Did you write this sketch? Did you perform it? Do you have any talent?

  • @oeokosko No, no and yes.

  • @angloscot42 Hey come a bit down of your germanophobia. This version here btw is the Swiss version which also spread to the Scandinavian countries. This sketch has become popular in more than dozen countries and is a firm part of New Year's eve. Without German and Swiss TV this brilliant sketch would be long forgotten today.

  • GREAT. I see Dinner for One every year :))

  • @SpiritualSuicides It's just turned into a custom in some countries, like Germany. Every New Year's it's screened in tv since 1972 and until 2 years ago I've watched it regulary too :) Watching it now to catch up.

  • @SpiritualSuicides Why not?

  • HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!!

  • Hahaha! always a classic for a New Year!

  • Best ever

  • This is not the original version , but the swiss version from the same year. Almost the same as the original, but different in many details...

  • @LarsiHelsinki he sketch was written byBritish author Lauri Wylie in the 1920'sIn 1962, German entertainer Peter Frankenfeld and director Heinz Dunkhase discovered Dinner for One in Blackpool.. It was first shown on German TV. But this clip featuring British comedians Freddie Frinton and May Warden s as close as you will get to the original 1920's theatre production. There were many versions recorded for all over the world, but the first TV show was in Germany

  • Ich glaub es geht schon wieder los!

  • Das ist einfach nur Kult zu Silvester :D

  • Ein Silvester ohne Dinner for one? Kann ich mir nicht vorstellen, das ist einfach Kult... Ich seh es mir jedes Jahr an. Tja, was soll ich sagen? The same producer as every year ;-)

  • Fucking every year, James

  • I just love it !! Without it a happy new year is impossible !!!

  • happi new year miss sofie,

  • Der lacher jedes Jahr Silvester wieder.

  • Since 1976 this sketch was shown on Swedish TV every year on New Year eve except for 2004 ( because of tsunami in Thailand).

Happy New Year again! (the same procedure as every year :) )

  • Wonderful! Thanks for posting this! I live in the States but grew up in Germany - we watched it every year on New Year's Eve around 6PM on TV....

  • ich finds nach ein paar jahren ein bischen langweilig weil man es schon auswendig mitsprechen kann aber immer noch lustig vorallem wenn er sich wunder wieso er gestolpert ist

  • I can't wait until the day before Christmas to see this on TV.. =D

It can't be Christmas without it. =)

  • Actually, it's not the original version, it's the swiss version, which was broadcasted the same year as this. But the original is a bit longer and there are more proper sets and more jokes.

But in fact, Freddie Frinton was changing this sketch ever and ever.

  • warum ist das kult ??

  • @FwkPolska

  • Brings back some good memorys!

  • its a pity it doesnt come on tv anymore :(

  • I´m 35 Years now, that means that I watched this show for the last 35 Years every new years eve

  • he walks drunk form the alcohol last year

  • Same procedure as every year James........ We watch this every year! So good!!!!!!! LOL

  • Ist das nicht die Version der Schweizer?

  • This it my Grandfother.....I love this...Thanks for posting it....I miss him a lot...

  • @mpcoo50 it is not!

  • @mpcoo50 That makes me wonder, out of curiousity, were Mr.james actually drinking any liquor under this shoot? At any rate, he does well to stay in character ^^

  • @mpcoo50 I haven't seen this for years and years. But it came up in conversation with a friend in Vienna who tells me it is played on Austrian TV every year at Christmas time. Without fail. I had to look it up to see what he was talking about.

  • @leveyy its played on every channel in germany on the 31 of december

  • @mpcoo50

  • @mpcoo50 Really?! He's your grandfather!? That's awesome! :) I'm sorry that he passed away, but he makes every New Year wondrously funny. :)

  • @mpcoo50 Your Grandad was awesome! This wee sketch is a must on hogmanay in Germany...has been for 40-odd years..there was a national outcry when they wouldn't televise it one year...dinner for one and Sylvester....synonymous in Germany!

  • @mpcoo50

  • @mpcoo50 Really?

  • ich schaus eig nur an silvester aber es is einfach lol

  • seen it several times, and every time, i laugh my ass of xD

  • es gibt auch eine neue überarbeitete version in farbe aber die is iwi nicht so gut wie das original^^

  • After reading some stuff about this on IMDB, let me see if I've got this straight: Some people say that this is NOT the original version, because the original was made in Germany. But apparently the Germans hired British actors to do the skit on German TV, and it was agreed that they'd do it in English. So I'm guessing this really is the original. (Also, apparently the original skit IS English, & was performed on stage long before the TV version.)

Please help this ignorant Yank: Am I right??

  • @TroyOi OK, sorry, now I see that this is indeed NOT the original. But it does feature the same cast as the original. Again, please set me straight if I'm incorrect in that.

  • @TroyOi there are even other seats xD

  • @TroyOi I think so... I saw this for the first time when I was visiting family in Berlin and what you have written makes sense because this has always been in English.

  • @TroyOi Not quite. In fact there are two original versions, one produced by German TV and one produced by Swiss TV in the same year. Roughly said, the German version is the one with an introduction speaker and a white tablecloth, the Swiss version has no introduction speaker and no tablecloth. The actors, the texts, the procedures are the same in both versions. These are the earliest TV adaptions. Every following screenplay, theater, sketch etc. has been derived from this sketch.

  • das haben wir früher IMMER an sylvester geschaut...ich LIEBE es! "The same procedure as every year, james!"

  • Just Love This :O)

  • Das original is einfach toll!!!

  • I remember having seen this sketch on TV when I was a kid. But this time I understand the end.

  • what is the food he gets at 8:22

  • fruits

  • @SAMurai00X 'fruits'

  • Whilst in South Africa, come every New Year's eve, SABC used to broadcast this clip without fail. It was a N Y tradition, Then I had a friend from Germany who mentioned this and said that it was their tradition, and I watched it with my husband who never saw it before, and of all places, we watched it in Saudi Arabia. Since then I wanted a copy, but never got it, so I searched for it on YT, and this is now my and my husband's tradition, going to be anyways!! I love it, love it, !!! cHEERS!

  • You uploaded it just a few weeks ago.! :- )
