He was so close, his car hit downed wires! What if they had been live? Was this guy a trained storm chaser? It sure doesn't seem like it! I still contend he put his kid in harms way! They could have watched in one spot further away. That tornado originally went over us in Morris, Ill. about 3pm that day. We didn't get hit but it went south of us and hit Wilmington, Monee, Odell, Manhatten, Franklin Park, Frankfort and several other towns as it veered course and went ne all the way to Indiana!
Whatever! This kid had the time of his life and will never, ever forget this experience. His dad was not putting him in harms way and had their safety in mind the entire time. I get so tired of people trying to parent other people's children. We live in a PC world and I am so tired of it. These are probably the same people that think that every kid deserves a trophy just for participating. Guess what, there are winners and losers in life and children need to learn that. This dad is a winner!
Incredible footage but I think you put yourself and your son in harms way and were way to close to it and you two could have ended up dead, like the people in Joplin, Mo. You even hit a power line and were dodging debris! That's too close!
I think I may have seen that on the news way back when. Great footage. Glad you guys are ok...that must have been the best father/son time. Amazing. I would love to go storm chasing.
Yeah I remember my dad driving me and my brothers to see the aftermath of the F5 Jarrell, tx tornado, but I definitely wish he took me tornado viewing. Maybe not an f5 on account of the sheer terror I would have had as a little kid but yeah this is awesome, what an opportunity
Im obsesssed with tornadoes, and i live here! I was at a dance recital when this happened, so i didnt get to see it..blehh. Well theres supposed to be severe weather tonight sooo im keeping my fingers crossed (;
On the one hand I can't believe you took your kid out tornado-chasing . . . . . . but on the other hand, I'm totally jealous! I was nine years old when I first got interested in tornadoes. I would have been so stoked! I think you got a little too close for comfort at the end (those power lines looked dangerous), but you both seem to know your stuff and stayed mostly safe. Hope everybody in that car and the houses was okay.
yes have to agree, wish my dad woulda taken me on something like this hehe. as it was, i was 5 and i got to go with my dad to photograph the aftermath of the 1967 oak lawn tornado...not the same tho! Excellent video, i was chasing this storm but was a little too late getting out there from oak forest so i never got a nice view of it.
Great video. I live in Illinois and have always been fascinated and terrified by twisters. I like vids like this because when non professionals record it, you can really experience the moment and the shock of it. Your son did a great job filming this too.
mokenaman1 you shouldnt be ashamed thats some good footage and commentry by you and your son gave me a good feelimg of what its like chasing a tornado!

I'm sorry if you know where you are in a storm as you seemed to know, great video. But the hitting the power line thing and the casual oh look peoples lives are being destroyed joy make, well, you suck.
Very nice footage, not sure I'd chase with my family... but your life, not mine. I am intersted, was there any loss of life in this tornado, besides trees? As for the person in EMS of some sort, I to have been there too, you can't lump everyone into the same boat....
I remember getting off work and going in the house with my 6 pack looking over the deck and seeing the tornado. depchiefwest the people in that area are so used to it you would go insane. i miss that area.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
I can not believe you took your innocent child in this environment. He is a child and looks to learn right and wrong from someone like your self. Instead you act like a child your self and put both of your lives at danger. I have been in the emergency services my whole life and deal with horrible situations caused by ignorant people as your self. You should be ashamed.
Chill out. The guy sounded like he had had some experience with this sort of thing, knowing where to drive and how far to stay back from the microbursts that cause a lot of the real damage. If he weren't, he probably would've did what the rest of us would've done: record from the deck, and then run like hell toward the basement once it would get a little too close for comfort.
I kinna have to agree with this, yall were too close, even though it was moving away from you, but then again they can always change direction. Great captures though, I hope no one was hurt?
What a way to spend a Tuesday afternoon. I can't believe you RISKED YOUR KIDS LIVES driving past fallen power lines while chasing a tornado. What was going through your head..........unbelievable.
I live a mile south of Manhattan, and while I saw this, I was in the pool. lol. Didn't even care about getting out either. This was very cool, and I would've filmed this if I had a camera. Watching this is like living it all over again. Thanks for the footage!
If you are going to take your children out and do this, I would suggest you get some education by going to spotter training class. You could have very easily gotten in some serious trouble the way you are approaching this. I filmed the same storm, but I was never as close as you were, and I was never on the North side of the storm. Good video, poor judgement on safety. Never drive through power lines....
awesome footage! but i would of stopped the minute i saw downed power lines, and would of stopped to see if anyone was in that damaged car..and i would NEVER endanger my kids like that.
thank you for going west of it and following. i see so many amateur videos where they go to the east and then try to outrun the thing when it comes toward them. i wonder how many of those videos we just never see. you know what you're doing.
i remember seeing the damage on 57 from this tornado. really good video.
Awesome job filming this. Next time be more careful of the down power lines. Thanks for posting, I was looking for this. The day before this storm, the weather was so wicked. I was at work the day before (Center Rd & Laraway) and knew something big would happen soon. Incredible job.
at the point they saw the damaged car, they should have looked to see if there was anyone IN the car and offered assistance. Chasing these are beyond cool, but there's a point where ya gotta turn off the camera and help people in need.
lmao that's the whole thing of something...def a great line...awesome camera work too dude..so cool you guys could share a experiance like that..just watch out for those power lines next time lol
amazing footage!!! i dont know how i havent seen this until now. What a beast for this part of the country. My footage was used on fox 32 as well. Awesome work guys.
Whoever shot the video for this... a small word of advice... hold the camera more steady. Awesome footage of the tornado, but there are a few shakes there that are challenging to the eyeballs.
i would agree your biggest danger is all the debris..your in perfect position on the tornado but a country road with little power lines would help...as a fellow chaser of the state i would have to say thats a beast tornado...pretty damn good footage
As a storm chaser, I want to say great video. Unlike some of these other comments, you were in seemingly very little if any danger at all. This tornado was 2 months past my 10th years anniversary of traveling the plains in search of these bad boys and low and behold one hits 17 miles so my south. Great video, way to stay calm, then only thing I would recommend NOT doing is driving near those downed wires, definitely don't want to be tangled up in that mess! Good job, stay safe.
surreal video... I do have to say your son(s) is pretty brave because if I was in the car, id probably be slapping my dad to get away... Glad you guys didn't get hit, amazing footage.
Now that was a day to remember, I got footage of the storm as it passed through Northwest Indiana. Imagine if it had gone through Chicago, that would have been one of the most destructive natural disasters in history.
Excellent video...bad judgement. Those things can come down right on you...is it worth your life or the life of your family? If you say yes, then i worry for you my friend. But other than that, the footage was really good.
theres a difference between a sense of adventure and being careless. I have been IN tornados, meaning house being ripped apart, namely the 1967 oak lawn tornado, and let me tell you, you do not want to "accidentally" get in the way of one. I suggest stay far away from them while taping..thats what zoom is for! That was your family in the car with you man! if something would have happened, you would have never forgiven yourself. (if you lived)
so totally true but as a parent...no way would i be putting my kid in that situation...nuh-uh.
those wall clouds are way too unpredictable for me to risk anyone but myself and that kind of curiousity isn't fear in my book but just plain wanting to see it and experience it. had they been planted in one spot watching that is one thing...to chase it? naw...no way with a kid even if they wanted it.
i always wonder when people are doing this do they realize that the rotation is over head and they are watching out in front and not watching over head or behind?
wow this will prob. change ur sons life into a storm chaser. witnessing something like this at a young age is something incredible. and great fotage by the way
WOW...amazing footage!! Your kids are super brave, if my dad had taken me out to chase tornadoes like that I most assuredly would have wet myself...lol. Some very interesting footage of one of the tornadoes from
Saturday's storm as it walks across the farmlands to the west of us in
Park Forest ...this is the one, I believe, that missed us to the south
merely ripping up a string of massive high voltage transmission towers
as it passed by causing power outages for some 30,000 homes, including
mine, for a day or more. It was a different tornado that stalked
through Richton Park, causing considerable damage, that missed us by a
mere few blocks.
