I love Sassy, Ella , Peggy, Rosie and all the others who made MILLIONS in the vocal field, but Mavis...oh Mavis...almost on welfare in comparison, money-wise.
Gimee a damn break.....does it ever get any better than this....closest thing might be Etta in her prime.

the difference is, the father is a member of the group; not the manager. Also, they embraced their spirituality; the Jacksons were at odds with theirs.
Amen, amen , amen!! I absolutely love it when a singer truly feels their songs. . .makes for an awesome experience. Love Mavis' crescendo and the way she is spent afterward, 7:15-7:59
I so LOVE You Tube!!!!!!!!!!!! Thank you so much for sharing this footage. . .Nine minutes of greatness. . .[bowing with my arms doing that wave motion] We're not worthy. . .we're not worthy!
I have been wondering if anyone had captured this footage from Montreux 1981. Dana Goodman was the drummer on this gig. Thurman Morgan was the guitarist, Michael Logan-keyboardist, Larry Kimpel-Bassist
But to answer your question, according to Mavis (from a radio interview, about a year ago) all of the siblings are still alive and well, but unfortunately, Cleotha has Alzheimer's, and it's at the worse stage where her memory is pretty much gone.
I remember having the biggest crush on Mavis Staples as young kind. All of my friends were into Funkedelics, Bootsy albums and here I am, bringing along my Staple Singers albums. But today, Mavis is still making music...so there!
Introduced to their music by my youth pastor in the 70's. Always have had an impact on my life. Makes you want to do more and be more for Jesus.... PTL
I remember listening to Mavis sing "I'll take you there" in the late 60's and early 70's and her sound was magical and sensual, it made me feel up... I was 10 yrs old then and loved her style... she and her group is the "I GOT A DREAM", personified in all dimensions.
i had the pleasure of seeing mavis in concert in germany a little while ago and the beautiful vibes that she floated over us let me know angels are amongst us. i would have loved to have seen mavis and the great sam cooke sing together love and peace and many thanks for posting this wonderful lady j vincent edwards
this is what you call real music, if we can turn back the hands of time to when there was nothing but real artist out there, these 2000's singers are some crap... does anyone agree?
Congratulations on using one of the nastiest curse words in the English language while commenting on an ispirational song. I wonder what spirit moved you to write that? I doubt it was the Holy Spirit.

This afternoon, after hearing of Michael Jackson's death, I blamed it on his parents.
I blamed it on media moguls.
I blamed it on money.
Then I remembered Mavis. How she was taught to be wary of a 'fast' buck. (By her preacher father.)
This woman has ethics.
The Staples family has ethics. Morals.
And a godawfulotof talent.
What makes them different from the Jackson family?
Someone, please tell me.

The Staple Singers & Family stayed grounded and in love with each, their inspirations and their music. All the difference in this world.
