Herzog Zwei is potentially the best online multiplayer game ever.

The CPU's OCD is not always all-consuming; there have been some occasions when the CPU would attack one of my sub-bases many times with no success, but then turned his attention to another of my bases. The CPU AI sometimes pulls off surprises and gets the upper hand.

Hmm... I've never watched this review before. HERZOG ZWEI is actually one of my brother's favourite games (he's BearsInGames on Youtube). The only RTS game I played on Genesis back in the day was DUNE, though.

It's very easy to beat the computer in Herzog Zwei. What you need to do is take over a neutral base (or an enemy base) and start building AA missiles. If you have enough units, they'll destroy the enemy mech. And the computer, in a fit of stubbornness, builds a new unit and then flies right back, only to be destroyed again. While this is going down, you can send troops to other bases and send a couple tank convoys to take down his HQ. Pretty fun. Bring this back, Sega!

You do not start with less bases on the hardest difficulty. The only difference is the presence of canons around enemy's main base and your ship runs out of gas quickly.

I played this quite a few times against my brother back in the Mega Drive era which for the time was a real buzz as there just simply weren't many real time competitive games. It was truly a ground breaking title which looked nerdy... cos it was! LOL

A PC type title for a console that made PC owners back then jealous.

@Elquelosabetodo95 You can download the ROM for use on an emulator like GENS. Try romhustler. An Emulator is a program for your PC that allows it to read console games. It's normally one console=one emulator. I have a few Emulators on my PC.

I used to play it head to head, put a big piece of cardboard down the centre of the TV (so we couldn't see the other player's strategies) and would take breaks for food, beverage and bathroom.

Nice review, but just gotta say, it's not a mysterious race of blue aliens that you battle as said in the description. If you read the manual, its the opposing forces of a civil war. You control one faction, they (the cpu or player) control the other. The title basically says this because Herzog is a title equivilant to an english duke, and zwei is two. You are the 2nd duke of the war.

Good to see others with an appreciation for this classic game though, props.

the resuplydrone cannot get lost this way and almost instantly resuplies the SAMs you only need one of these near an enemy subbase to take it Possibly substituting one of the SAMS with a tower unit (the one that does both SAM and tank dammage). the problem with this tactic is that many feel this breaks the game (though only against the A.I.)

No it isn't... your units have to do all the work for you... speaking of which you should've just used the Boats (albeit expensive) to attack the base... the opponent will basically just fly around aimlessly and helplessly as their outta range for the guns (Artillery Boats anyone?).

The refueling units are actually useful. You need to put down 4 or more missle launchers with orders not to move in a cirlce , and then put the refueler inside. The refueler can't get lost as he is stuck inside and every time he bumps a unit trying to get out he refuels it. The enemy can't kill a missile unit quick enough before he dies and then the unit is fixed by the repairer

zwei is pronounced "tsfy". Not knowing anything else about this game I'm assuming that zwei means it's the second herzog game. Thanks to IGN's retro podcast for pointing this game out to me. lol...can you say shout-out? These old games rock man.

At 0:52 Mark speaks it out almost correctly, and that the game title is literally "Duke II" is mentioned in the first part of review. He even tried a number of times to pronounce it as correctly as possible but gave up, so have mercy please. :D And it's not like it's intended to be pronounced correctly, since the game is not german but japanese anyway.

this is a game that I'd see on the shelf of every place I went to buy a new megadrive game from when I ran out of games to play..

it was one of those games, like lemmings on the super nes, and any madden football game, that had an instant 'avoid-me' appeal

i'd have to be very desperate for a game to play to go out and buy any of the games i mention above... and yes i did buy lemmings, at the time the snes releases were so far apart and i was going mad with cravings for a new game

I remember playing a skirmish mode in the 1998game Future Cop that seemed like it borrowed alot from this game. I remember thinking that that skirmish mode was alot of fun, so this should proabably be great.
