One thing that works well for me when I want to stretch my natural roots is the gel from the aloe vera plant. I take the gel from the aloe plant and coat my hair from roots to tip with it. I notice that my roots were smoother, softer, and the natural curl extended. I think it is a safe and healthy way plus the aloe gel promotes growth.
I too get a lot of shrinkage, and I've been natural over four years. My hair is really long, but appears shoulder length most times. My advice to anyone who wants to avoid shrinkage, is to avoid water except when necessary. From looking at your videos, it seems as though you like to use water while styling (like for your twists). In my case, I only style with dry hair. I use oils and things like that on my hair to twist, but I never twist on wet hair, if I plan on wearing it out the next day.
I have 50% shrinkage i love it its funny my friends make a game of playing with my curls and watching them spring back cause my hair curly touches the back of my neck in the back when in reality its several inches below my collar bone embrace the cirls their really cute!
@facookie13 My friends do the same thing! I'll be sitting in church and people will randomly (well..people I know lol) tug on a curl and then watch it spring back..in school....once a friend actually put a penny in my hair and it disappeared! Lol
you should have a blog page, you and your hair are amazing. i have started looking after my hair after seeing you and longhairdontcare.3 years time i want to be around your length and fullness
Hey I recently accepted my natural hair, but i notice it got really damage from weaving it to often. Now I just leave it loose. I was wondering, is it bad to use conditioner in your hair everyday? Well actually it's 50% water and 50% coconut oil conditioner. Also my hair is very thin, what product would you advice is the best to make it thicker and stronger
I have a lot of shrinkage. My hair shrinks to my ears but straightened it goes down to my armpits....ugh. Lol. But I don't wear my hair "down". So it doesn't really matter does it? :) I just want a really big bun and I want to be able to one long braid and two long braids. :D
Your hair is long as ever and that's why they can't see the shrinkage. Now cut it off, attach it to a weft, and send it to me. lol jk Your hair is cute.
I think it would be great if you could do a video showing your shrinkage on dry unstyled and product-free hair. That way we could also see your natural texture since a lot of us are soooo curious about it :-)
i like to keep my natural curl pattern, so after wash/condition/leave in i put it in a loose bun on the top of my head, as close to my forehead as it can go. and then let that dry 75% and then a pineapple ponytail, and i get some length!
Hi i found you through curly nikki and i was amazed..lol all that beautiful hair..this isnt related to the video at all..but i immediately liked your spirit and attitude..this will sound silly but many women with long hair are very mean about not sharing or helping others..i appreciate you being so forthcoming. i tend to have very dry hair and i do get alot of popping and single strand knots and just knotting in general. any tips? ive thought about keeping it straight due to this..
What's your hair type? I can rock a braid out, but only if my hair is really moisturized or if it isn't, for a short period of time. Once the moisture is gone from my hair it dries and shrinks. I want to try the methods you mentioned on wet hair and let it dry BEFORE I take it down. Wish me luck! :)
you probably also dont have alot of shrinkage because you have so much hair to weigh it down..I learned that from Terri LaFlesh..she has curly hair down her back and it LOOKs wavy up until the ends because all the hair weighs it down, but if it were really short it would be little shrunken curls lol :)
I ABSOLUTELY LOVE your Vids and your channel!!!! You really tackle a lot of issues and answer questions other natural channels fail to address. Thanks for that! You are Beautiful and my hair inspiration. Thanks for sharing :<)
I have about 75% shrinkage and I love it! Like somebody else said, you keep 'em guessing concerning your hair length. My hair is almost APL, but when I wash it and leave it to its own devices, it's at my ears!
HELP my hair is 4months post relex and I'm having bad breakage ...I my hair was 2 the middle of my back ( bra strap length) now its about 5in above that my hair type is 4a 4b what am I doing wrong please HELP
@mylilsecert is your hair breaking from chemicals and heat or just just a lack of moisture ? always try to add a lot of moisture to restore the elasticity of your hair if that doesn't work then the hair is most likely damaged by keratin loss try the aphogee 2 step program you can read reviews at folica.com and follow the instructions very carefully it stopped my hair breakage ~ good luck !
I have SO much shrinkage lol, i blow my roots a little sometimes and I clip my hair up (using a claw) during the day which stretches it a lot without using heat or making marks from banding.
I'm sure there is even more shrinkage to your hair when it hasn't been stretched at all from a braidout or twistout too. Do you think that having longer hair gives your hair more weight, which helps with shrinkage?
Great video. Do you have problem with tangles when you wear your hair out like in this video? Do you find you have to do a lot of protective styling to maintain your length? Thanks.
I get about 35% shrinkage. Not much, but i actually LOVE my shrinkage because if my hair isn't blown out or stretched, it's like having short hair. I like the versatility of being able to have short curly hair and long hair when it's stretched. Maybe that's just me. :o) My hair is a little past my shoulders unstretched and midback length when stretched.
@ohglamour That's great! You really look at your shrinkage in a positive way! I think that's an important part of being natural...loving and excepting what you have and not wishing it was something different (even though most of us are guiltly of not doing so at some point in our journey). Good message!
@HairCrush If my hair was this long,I would have no problem with it being natural...but with it being short and kinky, when it dries, i don't care for it. To each his own.
Why should she have to prove that she is 4a/4b? She already took time to do hair videos and you want her just to do one to prove something to you. SMH
@KMO77ola I absolutely agree with you! Why are people hating on this lady? Anyone with good eyes can tell she has kinky hair! Her hair lies down better because of the length. Why don't people understand that? I think people need to be better educated about kinky and curly hair.
The way i stretch is either spraying my hair from a straightened state... w/ water or a curl reviver OR ill use GEL ... and shingle...so the 1st day ill have shrinkage but when i go to sleep i put my hair into a ponytail.. i dont brush it i just gather it up the way it is.. & sleep w/ a satin bonnet.. in the morning i dont put ANY more water. just oil for moisture. the pony lengthens my coils. just use an alcohol free gel that doesnt make ur hair hard. OH! & i use Shea Moisture under the gel =)
I don't people are accounting for genetics in your scenario chime. I don't know why it's so hard 2 believe ur 4a when your hair clearly has a kinky pattern not wavy. Its not that complicated I don't think but thanks for this vid! !
Your awesome! So positive! Love it! My hair is fine 3C and spirals and frizz... Hate it... Lol!! Super frizz! Everyone else loves it! I have to do roller set for stretching.;(
Hi! Honestly, I can't comprehend your hair texture! It's so beautiful and always appears wavy, yet you swear you're a 4a/4b. So, what's the deal? How've you reached your length with 4a/4b texture. Do you always keep your hair stretched. Most people who have 4a/4b textured tresses have to keep their hair in protective styles. But, you seem to always wear your hair down. So, please clarify, prove that you're a 4a/4b, Also, if you are, how have you retained length wearing your hair down? thanks
I think she is more of a coarse 3b. I think she is mistaking texture with curl/wave size. 4a/4b = extreme shrinkage because of a very tight curl pattern. Her hair looks thick, coarse, and wirey in texture but the actualy curl/wave pattern is very loose compared to a 4a/4b which is why she doesn't have extreme shrinkage. Either way her hair is to die for!!! :-)
@kahleentenshi when ur hair gets longer....its heavier so shrinkage is lessened. but u can tell her texture if u look closer...when i was natural before my curl changed from it being so long
@kahleentenshi I think she don't has to prove anything here! If you dont want to believe then just don't. I grew up in Africa so I've seen every kind of kinky hair types and believe me not everyone has 75% shrinkage! And not everyone with 4a/b has to wear protective styles to retain length. Also we can have the same hair type and our hair retains moisture diferently. Genetic also plays a role in how our hair acts.
@kahleentenshi A textured style is a protective style. Scrunching the ends with oils help. If she doesn't manipulate her textured style, that's just as protective as "bunning" which causes stress on areas of your head---which can lead to breakage. I wear my hair down 30% of the time, and it has not stopped my growth---actually, my hair grows faster because I take better care of it, and manipulate it less without the stress of bunning.
when I went natural a few years ago, my aunt told me the same thing about braiding it up to pik out our fro. She told me it stretched it and for me, it looked better because it was more uniformly round.
search for caopara1 on youtube. she has two amazing tutorials on how naturals can stretch their hair straight... without heat. and haircrush, you got me to put down the blow dryer so thanks.
I am all too familiar with shrinkage and I totally agree that gels do not help to see length. At least that is true for me. Another informative vid. Thanks!
Weather has an impact on my shrinkage.(High humidity), I am trying different products, some lighter than the butters. This seems to be how my hair wants to react...I'm going with it. Maybe length will help my hangtime! Do you find your hair to have less shrinkage since it is so long?
Hey, I have a question about hair retention and end breakage. I've been completely natural for two months. I know my hair is growing, but i do not think it is retaining length because it is breaking. I usually only leave it out in twist outs and braid outs. Should I be doing protective styles? Did you do protective styles when you were growing it out?
@StuckOnMagicXD You can always get your hair braided. If you want to do it yourself you could wear your hair in a bun. French braid it into two braids. Twist your hair (almost as if you were doing a twist out) put it in a ponytail and tuck the ends. Or you could try some retro styles.
Wow, Chime, I had no idea about your hair texture. I have 4b hair. Idk if you always do twist-outs or braid-outs but I was thinking if you do, maybe your hair's just used to being stretched so it doesn't shrink as much. Idk. I've only been natural for a year so I only have a little over 5 inches of hair and I like to do medium sized twists with perm rods and I get a really cute, stretched curl when I take them out. Banding is awesome, but you can also do african hair threading and twist your
@hwiley09 hair with thread, pulling the hair and winding the thread around it tightly. You can search it here on YouTube (By you I mean whoever happens to read this comment, lol).
i prefer braiding instead of twisting..my hair is stretch out more with braidouts nd i get way too much shrinkage wit twists...not tht i mind anyhow =)
thank you for ur advice, i will try it,,! (: my shrinkage is bad,! my hair shrinks above my shoulders when my hair is at bra-strap length! but i will definitely try this technique (:
Just want to say "thank you" for addressing this (shrinkage). I was one of those people who were curious about whether or not you experienced shrinkage. :-)
I twist my hair after washing, let it air dry almost completely, and do one or two passes with the dryer to stretch it out (after adding a moisturizer).
my hair has 75% shrinkage. i always look like i have a twa when it's freshly washed, but it actually goes past my chin in some areas and past my collar bone in others.
@gozosa1980 The same here! I have about 75-80% shrinkage and my hair is past my collar bone. When it has been washed, it shrinks up to my ears and above LOL!
it's better to use a diffuser attachment instead of a comb if you want to keep the curl.

@IamWhatIam081 My hair used to be armpit length and i cut it to shoulder length.

@StuckOnMagicXD You can always get your hair braided. If you want to do it yourself you could wear your hair in a bun. French braid it into two braids. Twist your hair (almost as if you were doing a twist out) put it in a ponytail and tuck the ends. Or you could try some retro styles.

Can you do a vid on how you maintain your braidout?

Where do you get your graphic tees? They are soo cute!
C00kieBaGg 11 months ago
Does the banding technique cause a lot of stress on the hair since you have to start at the root? I'm afraid that will be a lot of tension
C00kieBaGg 11 months ago
i prefer braiding instead of twisting..my hair is stretch out more with braidouts nd i get way too much shrinkage wit twists...not tht i mind anyhow =)

Just want to say "thank you" for addressing this (shrinkage). I was one of those people who were curious about whether or not you experienced shrinkage. :-)

thanks for the har tips, i'm going to attempt streching my hair out by following the banding method. you and your hair are beautiful as always.
godsno1girl 11 months ago
I twist my hair after washing, let it air dry almost completely, and do one or two passes with the dryer to stretch it out (after adding a moisturizer).
