@xiNPuRiTi I'm not suprised by what you say, in my day only a decade or so before, we sung the hymn "I vow to thee my country" from which this is also taken, not this which is a rugby world cup song. I dont want to harp on about politics but I have to say that this is a good illustration of the countries decline in pride fed through the school curriculum, although the world in union is itself very pleasant.
Americans won't appreciate this because according to them a 'World Cup' is only played amongst themselves. They're also not into Rugby, the second most popular sport on earth.
@Jaymoization Hardly! Preaching peace is appropriate, as is preaching unity, if by that you mean love & brotherhood. (As opposed to world government, which some say this song promotes; I don't think it does.) But I would be horrified if my clergyman suggested mankind, broken as it is, can achieve any real peace without God's help. Peace & justice & brotherhood are noble ends, things worth striving for; but by the teachings of my church, we can never expect to achieve them by our own efforts.
@Jaymoization I love this song. In the context of a (secular) film, and in the context of a (secular) international sports movement, I find it appropriate, inspiring & uplifting. But in no way is it a hymn; it does not recognize God (the way, for instance, the song "Let There Be Peace On Earth," which expresses very similar sentiments, does recognize God). It does not belong IMO in a church service. Some Christians in this thread made a blanket condemnation of the song; I take a middle road.
@marysueeasteregg haha to be honest i think the only reason they sing it is because it is a nice piece of music. i dont think you should read so much into it that you are horrified it is associated with christianity. i'm a christian too but i don't believe that we cannot achieve peace without God, we created war, therefore we can achieve peace.
We sang this today the school I work at in our One World Concert and it made me feel proud to be human! We had spent two hours celebrating many cultures stretching across the globe and it made me think that whoever was on the stage was amzing and equal. We had Masai warriors, Somali dancers, Bhangra, and mnay others and I was so proud.

The last person to come onto the international scene who readily advocated "World Union" was Adolf Hitler. He too was a great advocate of using the innocence of youth to market his agendas.
One's understanding of faith greatly impacts one's understanding of such philosophies. As Corrie Ten Boom, so aptly said "Only in the Kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, will all men truly be as one" (The Hiding Place). The compromise of Absolute Truth is its prostitution.
And when he was demanded of the Pharisees, when the kingdom of God should come, he answered them and said, The kingdom of God cometh not with observation: Neither shall they say, Lo here! or, lo there! for, behold, the kingdom of God is within you (Luke 17.20-21).
@lordhoot1 "Give not that which is holy unto the dogs, neither cast ye your pearls before swine, lest they trample them under their feet, and turn again and rend you" (Matthew 7.6).
you my dear friend are an idiot. this is a song from the rugby world cup. Hitler was also a strong advocate of clothes and we all know how evil they are.
Non sequitur logic and name calling do not make the case for any position.
As a fully credentialled public school teacher, I provide vocal instruction to more than 200 students daily. I also direct the school choir. Having studied hymnology, I assure you that the history of the song is as I have noted.
I simply find the secularization of a Christian hymn to be very disrespectful to a large portion of the World's citizens. I am offended to see the sacred made profane.
Oh brother, people don't realize how dangerous this is. But it sounds so, sweet! We learn from history that we don't learn from history. I feel sorry for ya world. It's gonna be bad.
You are 100% correct bluevitriol - religion will do nothing for unity, harmony and most of all eternal life. These are only obtained through Jesus Christ.

A world of unity is not wrong if people come together through Jesus Christ. All other vehicles of unity are futile. Jesus said "I am the way, the truth and the life; no man cometh unto the Father but by me".
Think of people wanting to get into a stadium and only one gate is open. You are standing at the open gate and calling the other people to come to your gate. You don't hate them or despise them; you want to help them.
These words of Jesus were spoken in love and care for you.

I found this song touching in the context of the film Invictus, and its background
of international sport [rugby].
But a "song of praise"? Huh? Praise of what? Praise of humanism, and some admirable ideals. (Admirable, or dangerous, depending on just what you
mean by "union.") But no mention of God. An atheist could sing this song in
good conscience. I'd be horrified if we sang it at my church.

The song is to show that all countries are different, but unite for the common good of the game of Rugby, to play hard but fair
