  • well, perhaps I'm confusing them with the 17th Reg Co. B "Westchester Chasseurs". The numbering & renumbering can get complex.

  • @albanybeardguy Actually its a yes and a no question. The 17th New York Volunteer Infantry Regiment, existed from 1861 to 1863, and was mustered out in New York City in May of 1863. It was then one of several regiments attempting to re-organize as Veteran Volunteers, after the draft riots new recruits became difficult to obtain and as a result the 9th, 11th, 17th, and 38th Veteran Volunteer Regiments were all merged together and designated as the 17th NY Veteran Volunteer Infantry Regiment

  • Weren't the 17th NY troops Chasseurs, not Zouaves?

  • @albanybeardguy No sir, that would be the 14th Brooklyn, the 17th Veterans were a Zouave regiment in dress and style, they adopted the Hawkins Zouaves (old 9th New York Volunteers) pattern uniform, several other regiments adopted that same pattern as well, including the 35th New Jersey and 164th New York. When they marched in the grand review in Washinton D.C in 1865 several folks noted how they appeared and acted almost exactly like the old 9th.

  • was that the civil war? cause thats what it looks like :D

  • FOR DIXIE VIVE LA ZOUAVES

  • @CJL1194 What? The Zouaves where soldiers from NY city, brave volounteers.

  • My great uncle was a Zouave who gave his life for his country in the battle of Jonesboro, Ga., on September 1, 1864. The 17th New York Veteran Volunteers were a rag tag bunch from all walks of life, many of whom had served honorably and simply wanted to re-enlist.

  • @pedrock1952 Was he a Confederate or a Unionist Zouave?

  • @

  • I've never quite gotten what Zouaves are. I heard something about that they were ex-cons, something else tells me that its just Veteran Soldiers who reenlist?

  • They were originally just reigments who wore uniforms in imitation of dashing French North African units. But they tended to accquire a reputation as units of men with a lust for flair and tenacity in battle.

  • ZOUAVES! ZOUAVES!

  • Zouaves Zouaves they theu are easily found. Zouaves Zouaves they are big clowns!

  • I'm in this recruiting video.

  • Fact: the zouaves wore like 2 pounds more of wool then the average yankee soldier

Iv faught with Birneys Zouaves and the Red Legged Devils of the 14th Brookly, 5th NY 69th PA
