  • can anyone tell me what the lyrics say? please, i wanna know what the beautiful melody is saying.

  • @FilipinoZeroFighter Its a Welsh Lullaby....Sleep in peace tonight, sleep.

  • THIS IS ONE OF THE BEST SONGS IN WELSH!!!

  • This song was mixed best with the war time background in WWII Shanghai. Touching at time the people were being bullied by the brutal JIA. Thats an exception in 1000s of years for China to face a very strong Japan. Not any more any time.

  • @yingnam japan moved with the times, chinadidnt, we have woodblock prints of japanese sabre and pistol armed cavalry fighting chinese soldierswith red tasseled polearms that would have been indistinguishable in the ming dynasty

  • @elgostine

But Japan lost the war in Korea to Ming Dynasty, right? How much do you know about Sino Japan wars? Without the help of UK and USA, Japan would not have advanced so much so fast.

  • @yingnam yeah, in the 16th century, the japanese were outnumbered as well as outclassed in terms of technology by the ming chinese, in the 20th century, china had stagnated militarially. japan during the meiji restoration gained massive advances and upgrades to its military, breechloading and precussion cap rifles, rifled cannons plus others things

the opium war also showcased how far behind the chinese were

only now has china regained its historic place as the most opowerful army in asia.

  • @elgostine

Yeah. Actually China had got the technology in fire weaponry before the takeover of the Qing Dynasty. Qing composed of Manchaurians who were nomads excelling in horsemen fighting. They were conservative and did not open their mind to the world. This led to a big setback in military updating. Later the great empire was humuliated by just a task force from UK. Qing fought almost via a medieval level army force against the very advance fleet of UK. Qing did not even fight properly.

  • @elgostine

Its strange that Chinese love Kung Fu fighting rather than firearms battles. Even in most of the Chinese movies, they are obssessed about the old style fighting. Amid the modern updating in weaponry in China where we can see fast build up of planes, missiles, naval, tanks and so on, the liking is still stuck to the swords and fists fight. It simply tells that Chinese are deeply in love with art than science. In Chinese society, we seldom talk about the power of gatling guns, etc.

  • BATMAN!

  • The movie was brillant! This is a memory from years past !

  • I want this played at my funeral

  • EMOTIONAL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!x

  • I thought it was Korean, at first. XD

  • This was before Christian Bale yelled at people for being on set when he's doing a scene.... and instead yells at John Malkovich for shooting his friend.

  • I want this song to be played at my funeral :')

  • bale is damn good big up from morocco

  • Magnifique.

  • Je cherchais cette chanson depuis 12ans... Merci, milles mercis !

  • I love this movie with Christian Bale. great movie

  • you could make a really awesome steven spielberg tribute video with this song...

  • This song always makes my cry. It's so beautiful...

A friend of mine sang this at his grandfather's funeral; it was his last wish, since he sang it to him when he was a baby. My friend learned a lot from him (including Welsh; he's very proud of his origin and passes it on to his youngest brother.), and he said it was just the best he could do.

And it was so. damn. beautiful. Since then, and I just heard him rehearsing, I'm always crying when listening to this. And I love it.

  • Beautiful song, great movie.

  • did christian bale sing this or just mimed because it's so cute an angelic like voice!

  • @saazdudex He just mimed it, James Rainbird sang it

  • I am going to play this song, when I going to fly a plane by myself and that is my childhood dream is to fly.

  • this was one of my choir teachers favorite songs and it was her las year, so she had us sing this. By the end she was crying... so pretty...

  • Such a beautiful song, makes me cry!!

  • Beautiful.

  • Great singing great music

  • I love this song

    thanx

  • I remember watching this film when I was around 11, I was so drawn into the dramatic scenes, to that boy who matured so fast with the war, and this song - it made the experience even more overwhelming!

I'm so exciting to find this beautiful song and to feel the same feelings after so many years...

  • <3

  • I cry every time i hear this song. :(

  • Before you loose hope and faith in humanity, look to this amazing piece of art to guide you. Redemption is always possible.

  • My god. This song never fails to give me chills. Everything about it is poetic.

  • just like a singing angel's... preventing a idiotic radical's of belief's that's majority now are in rebelous situation's ;God's simply said that loved onto other's and other's will loved you. it' means honored your oneself that's not to much hard for us to do...just help other's and other's will help us... God is the greateast

  • 2 people still didnt find the way home...

  • In the movie, which city is Christian Bale in when the Japs come and fuck everything and everyone up?

  • @minlarererdum He is in Shanghai in the International Settlement.

  • @Verweiler Thanks mate. I just bought the movie. What a masterpiece!

  • Empire of the Sun.....really beautiful film~

  • I can't help but thinking of the end of the movie... and those eyes... <3

  • This is Welsh... sounds like Japanese!!

  • @Blackknight13100 it sounded more mandarin or cantonese to me ;o and even some parts korean xD like..dur o gwen cheen ...lol

  • I saw the movie more than 20 years ago and I still remember it. I was searching it today because I want my daughter to see it

  • No, Christian Bale is lip-syncing in the movie. The real vocal talent was James Rainbird. If you like the movie you should read the book it was adapted from - Empire of the Sun by J.G. Ballard, it's one of the most powerful novels of the last 50 years.

  • is Christian Bale actually singing it?

  • Makes you want to sit and listen all day and forget about the things you need to forget

  • it's becoming one of my favorite films of all-time, simply beautiful

  • stunning movie, words cant describe how much i enjoyed it

  • at first in the movie i thought it was japanese...

  • @MultiAnn05 Welsh, I believe

  • @TheUsagiB0y thanks :)

  • what a great song

  • Searched for this song since 1987 when I was a young man. Thanks.

  • @Kaizaro123 i too. :)

  • If i could visualize a choir of angels singing, in heaven, this would be it. Arguably the finest rendition, made!

  • Truly the voices of angels!

  • this and katherine jenkins are the best versions ive heard of this amazing welsh song

  • hard nipples in 0,2 seconds...as hard as steel...

  • I CANT thank you ENOUGH for uploading this track!! It has been one of the most elusive ones since I joined YT!!

What an INCREDIBLE choral masterpiece!! I've heard SO many versions of Suo Gan, but THIS ONE is...in my humble opinion, the BEST!!!

    TIMELESS and WONDERFUL!!

    You have my deepest gratitude!!

  • Beautiful song, beautiful movie.

War is nothing but the capturing of a persons soul, their very being.

  • As this is one of my favourite films ever, I've made a drum and bass remix / tribute to it on my channel smokeylee1986. Nothing will ever beat this version of it though. Amazing song, amazing film. Whoever hasn't seen this masterpiece needs to go out and buy the DVD, and soundtrack....oh and my remix if it ever gets popular haha

  • @smokeylee1986 - How can you make a remix of something that's already perfect? Adding bass? Are you nuts?

  • @corner559 It's called having a bit of fun, lots of people make remixes of all sorts of stuff, I'm not trying to better this wonderful piece of music in any way, noone could, I'm merely remixing it for drum and bass fans. No I'm not nuts thankyou very much, I'd say creative if anything.

  • @smokeylee1986 No, you're nuts. Period.

  • @corner559 Well...not really. I'm sure people would probably agree there is nothing nuts about remixing music or films for fun. I'm not trying to better this wonderful piece of music in any way.

  • no matter who you are, that song will remaind you about childhood...without understanding words.....

  • coś pięknego ta piosenka jest po prostu przecudowna

  • This song is so beautiful !! When I heard this, I just want to cry ...

  • this song reminds of when i was scattered from all my brothers and still am today, and i still think of about them...........

  • @silcent14 I wish you peace in the heart and a knowledge and comfort that you will find them, in this life of the next. :-)

  • So pretty...I've heard this somewhere before..I just wish I could remember where....the tune is so enchanting...

  • @computerwiz10 Sleep my baby, at my breast, ’Tis a mother’s arms round you. Make yourself a snug, warm nest. Feel my love forever new. Harm will not meet you in sleep, Hurt will always pass you by. Child beloved, always you’ll keep, In sleep gentle, mother’s breast nigh. Sleep in peace tonight, sleep, O sleep gently, what a sight. A smile I see in slumber deep, What visions make your face bright? Are the angels above smiling, At you in your peaceful rest?

  • An brilliant movie and Christian Bale was truly a brilliant actor!

  • @douglaspotterpress absolutely! His performance in this just blew me away...been a fan ever since.

  • @douglaspotterpress And still is he ! :)

  • one of my favourite songs :)

  • this song would be perfect if it were some 5 minutes longer

  • This song makes me want to cry...

  • Esta es la única canción que me hace llorar

  • A sad song and film makes you think about the passing of another era at this time.

  • love it

  • ...And the above translation leaves out a coupla lines!

  • Something like this: Do not fear the sound, its a breeze Brushing leaves against the door. Do not dread the murmuring seas, Lonely waves washing the shore. Sleep child mine, theres nothing here, While in slumber at my breast, Angels smiling, have no fear, Holy angels guard your rest. Sleep my baby, at my breast, Tis a mothers arms round you. Make yourself a snug, warm nest. Feel my love forever new. Harm will not meet you in sleep, Hurt will always pass you by.
  • Beautiful movie - i rarely cry at the movies but this one was a tear jerker!

  • Such a beautiful song I wish I could learn to sing it to my son.

  • Thank you very much! Enough said :)

  • This performance is so stunningly beautiful, if you remember nothing else of the film, you remember it.

And the film itself is brilliant.

  • I agree, this gives me chills. it's perfect.

  • i just watched this movie last night. loved the song even before i saw it. GO CHRISTIAN BALE!!!!! hes so adorable in this movie

  • OMG!! FINALLY!! SOMEONE HAD THE GUTS AND INTELLIGENCE TO UPLOAD THE BEST....BEST VERSION of "SUO GAN"!!! I am SO glad it is here!! I wish the volume was a little louder, but I am NOT complaining!!

THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU!!!!

  • For me Empire of the Sun is Spielberg's greatest film and Bale's greatest performance.

I adore this piece and I always find that I am cleansed after hearing it.

  • @roachy333 That is so true. My mom passed away 3 weeks ago today and at her funeral, we played this song, because she'd always liked it. It was perfect for my grief to hear it - so cleansing, so understanding and so peaceful & gentle. It was like cool water.

  • Gives me chills.

  • 1:00 my favorite part ;-D

  • I always thought this song was something to do with the japanese i didnt realise it was from my own country lol (wales)

  • @dslrpicture I thought so too, there is something Zen about it or something. It has a beautiful spiritual feel that almost transcends origin. But if I were Welsh, I'd be proud to claim it.

  • Beautifull :)

  • Esta pelicula es una maravilla.

    No puedes perdertela. 100% recomendable

  • The audio of this video is not very good, but that's ok. Good uploading, beautiful song.

  • I appreciate all the voices I hear in this song

  • I was kinda dissapointed when I found out that christian bale didn't sing in the movie. But all I can say is that Christian Bale is one dang good actor. :) Also this song gives you that feeling of a forgotten memory. How you want to go back when you had a pure innocence of a child. Before everything changes...

  • Thanks - I had forgotten all about this great movie

  • Imagine my embarrassment when I discovered that this was a Welsh lullabye....When I saw the movie, Empire of the Sun, I thought Christian Bale was singing in Chinese!....anyways, James Rainbirds version(which Christian Bale lip-synched) is still the definitive version of this beautiful song, imho....The movie remains one of my favourites, and Christian Bale has turned out to be one fine actor....

  • I was about the same age as the boy in this film, when I first saw it. Both the film, and this song have haunted me for years. So powerful for a lullabye. This film is definitely on my top 25 favorite films of all time...made quite an impression.

  • Respond to this video... This is by far, the finest rendition, i've come across. So soothing and the angelic voice of the choir, simply lifts your mind and heart towards heaven!

  • Respond to this video... This is by far, the finest rendition, i've come across. So soothing and the angelic voice of the choir, simply lifts your mind and heart towards heaven!

  • i like listening to this whilst looking at images of the nuclear bombing of Japan

  • Thanks SOOOOOOOOO much for uploading this! I've been looking for this particular song for a long time. :) And kindly change the title. It's Suo Gan [for better search results]. :D Again, thanks a lot!

  • beautiful...

  • my favorite film and song....

  • @gytheio I saw this movie once, when I was 15, and this song and the scene from the movie with the Japanese pilots leaving on their last mission made me cry. It is the one thing I remember clearly from the movie. Thanks for sharing this.
