It's called polydactyl its a dominant genetic trait that causes those with it to have 6 fingers. That means the recessive trait for humans is 5 fingers. In most cases the fingers are removed because they are deformed or placed wrong, however some kids can use them just fine and just have 6 fingers.

I want to say it's for the Fox TV show, Fringe. The Pattern is a large part of it, and there was a website (imaginetheimpossibilities . com) created that talks about sheep circles. Also, Fringe has its own "glyphs," one of which is a six-fingered hand. But, I can't see why they wouldn't mention Fringe, unless it was just cut off. This was around the time Fringe came out, and if you were watching Fox it's a good possibility.
