Also yes it was like a predesessor to the walmart superstores. You could buy a shirt, develope pics, get a bike and a gallon of milk all at the same place

Smitty's was not the the "Walmart predecessor" it's now Fry's Marketplace...minus the restaurant. We lived near the one on 35th & Bethany, I think I was a teen when it went out of business. :(

@tkmaz according to clyde smith's book, smitty's was indeed the first superstore of it's kind. it opened in scottsdale in '62, attracting grocers from around the u.s. to take a look at it

@ultrakool There were small departments for toys or clothing - somewhat like Fry's Marketplace is now but Walmart is sort of the scourge of the nation these days & Smitty's always had a down home feel...something Walmart lost once ol' Walton passed on. We knew the barber inside Smitty's, the butcher, I once lost $5 on my way and the manager let me fill an I.O.U as a 10 year old child...I can't see Walmart doing that. Or really, ANY store. But it was a different time.

I loved the Smitty's Pizza. The Smitty's restaurant also kicked much ass.

amen to that....the one at 35th & Bethany wasnt half bad but the one at Peoria was better...its amazing I was like 7-8 when those Smitty's shut down yet I rememeber lol

@biglove1973 hey, that was the one we shopped at. i still live in the area. i was going to run a small article on smitty's in my magazine, in the future. one of my friends built the original parking lot for that store.
