  • that sax soli is a beast!!! love it <3

  • For musicians (arranger/composer mainly): Get Ray Right's book "Inside the Score" where he analises and explains with full detail 3 compositions by Thad (this is one of them), some by Sammy Nestico and three by Bob Brookmeyer. Bassist here is Jiri (later "George") Mraz. I think he is Hungarian. Jon Faddis is probably 1st trumpet. The original 1st time recording was in a studio, and did not have the initial improvised section.

  • I love the brass chorale section.

  • The lick at 3:14 in the piano solo is awesome!

  • can anyone describe the musical elements in this piece

  • @THE1kidGOODatMAG The first section efter the intro is a "chorale" and the main theme is kind of a blues turnaround. The harmonies is mainly very "thick" with almost no doubling in the brass. Typical Thad Jones...

  • I always wondered how to spell Pepper Adams in linear B!!

  • screw paintball, reinvigorate your skills for drums!

  • yeah well, paintball is huge in my life. tournaments and traveling around the country. its great. but my cousins the one thats got the talent for drums.

  • the Sax lick at 4:19 grooves so hard!!! My favorite part of this song. And who else thinks that the Trombone player at 3:40 looks like Paul from the Late show with Letterman?

  • yeah we're playing this song in our big band, its just like sex, its just fun to play :) im soloing , coz im 1st alto :))

  • Correct me if I'm wrong. Billy Harper, Ed Xiques, Jerry Dodgion, Ron Bridgewater and Pepper Adams - saxes?

  • Great bari sax solo by Pepper Adams.

  • Pepper Adams was one heck of a sax player. He played so good that he had the nickname the knife.Because when he got up to play,he would cut everybody down with his playing!

  • Jon Faddis on lead trumpet, right?

  • Yes, that's Faddis on lead.

  • It looks like something's coming out of thad's mouth at 0:42

  • I love the fact that a lot of great jazz performances on You Tube come from Japanese TV.

  • This band freakin RIPS

    Thank you for the upload.

  • young faddis playing lead

  • Holy crap. Hair?

The band is awesome too. Haha.

  • Best Big Band ever!

  • This is one of the classics in jazz composition. Every band should study and play it. It uses rock rhythm effectively, has great structure, the characteristic Thad voicings. It is versatile: here they opened it up for solos.

  • The trombones come in, not the trumpets

  • I like the way Thad gave Pepper a solo where the trumpets normaly come in.

  • Sir Roland Hanna!!!!
