@aceofspades02 yeah, I'm old school too, but you can turn off all the effects or not as you please, and with the new versions of Gnome and KDE you're not getting old school anything. E17 has been far faster than anything else on my computer and I haven't had any stability issues at all. Try it out with Bodhi Linux and don't turn on the compositing module. Speed is always a positive thing in my book.

Yes, e is great, lightweight. But it's also buggy. I like this WM, but it's not for somebody, who needs realy stable environment. It's good for testers;)
Great video, good music. I took a hiatus from Linux when Ubuntu was starting to get big. This was mostly because I game and develop on Windows. I still think Visual Studio is the most kickass piece of IDE software available. I still yearn for the freedom of linux customization and e, though ;)
The most fun I've had watching a desktop presentation! Would you kindly let us all know the specs of your computer? Memory, CPU, Graphics Card. Thank you and have a great week!
as far as i know development of enlightenment takes a lot of time because source code is carefully put together and checked because the creators of enlightenment are trying to keep it as lightweight as possible and that is truly amazing
@jarblewarble version 1.01 was released in May, so yeah it's been released. As far as finished? Linux isn't like Windows or Mac. The window managers don't go through version numbers often, unless there is a major change. Different distributions have different upgrade systems, some are called rolling release where packages are updated as you go like arch and debian and some are version locked like ubuntu
This has been flagged as spam show
effects on the icons look ridiculous, and are slow. The very same interface has a bunch of ugly problems with shadows and rendering speed.

outstanding features.. but they always make me wonder the same question. 'what for?'
honestly. I'm still adept to oldschool looks. fortunately, Gnome, Kde, and other allow me to do that.

I'd deactivate that shining animation every time you select something... I'm sure it'd drive me nuts after a few hours' work

I actually find E17 to be faster on my netbook than xfce.

I'm sick of gnome and am getting sick of KDE. I'm going to find a live CD distro of with enlightenment and see how it works out for me.

Enlightenment is fantastic, in 3-4 years will decome the best de for linux, an stable release are expected for christmas 2009

It was either Debian or Ubuntu back then.
But that doesn't really matter.
If there is no package available for your distro there is some automatic compiling script (easy_e17) that installs everything you need.

what distro is this im thinking of running this on a opensuse vm to see if i like it

I used Enlightenment back in 1997 and it was great back then... but now is a piece of art!

is this as mature and stable as gnome?

The only downside (according to me) is that the exploring utility (browse your files) is a bit too slim.
Else i love E17, it is fast and good looking (When you get rid of that ugly default theme) and it is easy to love.

thank you very much :)
It's made on a Laptop (Centrino, 1,6 GHz, onboard-Intel-gfs, 512 MB RAM).
Take in mind that it's recorded with a nested X-Server, which is the reason for the tearing-effect while moving the windows, i guess.

oh and my laptop runs 1400x1050 fyi.
(this comment-tree should be before the one in your reply. thanks to some 500-char-limit, i had to split it)

oh, and one nice thing to note (sorry, for this spam):
The whole desktop takes less RAM then the firefox you see runing there. Unbelievable but true.

So it runs better/faster in real usage.
Hell, it's even faster then Xfce, and comparable to a standard(that is, ugly and without additional stuff) fluxbox-desktop.
FlashBuster3000 4 years ago
There's only one problem with your theory:
Xfce is MADE for speed, Enlightenment is made to make your friends go "wow."
Oh well, I guess as long as it boots faster than KDE, it's good ;)
KuwabaraAgain 2 years ago
What makes you think e17 is only made for others to go "wow"?
E17 is made for speed and small footprint, even for embedded devices and it still looks nice :)
Version 1.0 will be finished this year, afaik.
