@afsound Round about the same time in Ireland there was a band called the Bogey Boys or something similar - Dave Fanning used to play them on the radio, perhaps that's what you are thinking of, he'd often play both bands on the same show.
This was from their first studio demo session, in April 1978, after they won the Harp Lager St. Patrick's Day talent contest. The other songs from this session were Trevor (which evolved into the b-side Touch), Inside Out, and Jack in a Box.
Ah i recognise Jack in the Box, and Touch is a gooder, believe it was included on the 11 O'Clock Tick Tock 45. This talent contest you mentioned, was that the one they recieved a smal recording contract where they did the U2 3 EP?
It was actually even before the EP. CBS gave them the funding to go into the studio to produce some demo tracks, and these were it. They had two more studio demo sessions between this one in April of '78 and one in June of '79, and it was in that June '79 session they recorded U2-3.
Excellents débuts pour U2 ,thanks

They started out as The Hype and changed it to U2. They never went by any other names.

@bfall66 Actually, they were originally named Feedback. Then they changed it to The Hype, then to U2. :]

No first they were Feedback. Then The Hype. Once Edge's brother left the band, they changed their name to U2.
