@AliTubelog Yeah, well, I think most people have the wrong understanding of the idea. The possibilities suggested in quantum mechanics are quantum states, not alternate storylines. Of course, that isn't what TV shows are going to portray, because it would be really dull.
(Everett, the guy who wrote the original paper, was a student at Princeton University, not exactly a backwater school, and his thesis adviser was John Wheeler, one of the inventors of the hydrogen bomb aka fusion bomb. So yeah, this is credible physics that Data is talking about here.)
@mrthebillman nah it is known as The Everett Interpretation or the Many Worlds Interpretation. it is very much mainstream physics, although the preferred theory is the Copenhagen Interpretation. the scientific hoakum part is them sitting there as if there is gravity, yet the ship is not under thrust or spinning, their ability to go faster than the speed of light, etc. lol ;-)
@mrthebillman btw I should point out that I don't have a college degree at all, certainly not one in physics! but, I am familiar with both copenhagen and everett from various popularizations of quantum physics. :-)
@TheWhep only moronic Troi asks about quantum reality. The others just sit there politely, silently pandering her stupidity and wondering how such an imbecile like Troi was added to finest crew in Starfleet.
lol, eventually STNG became Data educating the rest of the bridge crew on everything they experienced. The Enterprise would have been long destroyed if not for Data. The dude carries the ship on his shoulders.
plus their most serious threat in this episode is that billions of enterprises start filling the space of the sector they're in and keep coming ... I am not shitting you
@gaptoofgranny It's from the episode Yesterday's Enterprise, I believe. The reason all the uniforms are updated is because this scene is from an Enterprise in another reality. It explains why Wesley is there and why Worf is wearing a commander uniform. On that ship, Picard never returned from his Borg abduction. So Riker is captain, worf is his CO
I love how they made clueless Troi be the one who asks "What are you on about" while the rest look on sagely. They really wanted a dumb bimbo who could help with exposition.
I love how they all just look at him like they basically know what he's getting at.
If I could guest star in this scene, I would be the guy staring in blank confusion while Data speaks, mouth gaping and drooling a bit...and when he finished, I would suddenly adopt a look of comprehension and say: "Magic. Got it."
When i make choice, there will be an infinite number of outcomes of that choice. Such as i go to work on day and take a left turn(shortcut) instead of straight. Going left gets me to work, but if i went straight i would of ended up in a crash. BUT even though i took a left turn and i'm at work, in some other reality, i'm either dead, in hospital or ext from going straight.Makes since to me, theres a earth where you and me dont exist, or the Germans won world war 1, so much unknown in da universe
I hate this kind of stuff so much. This and the thing about time being relative and linked to space, and a few other things, make me want to tear the universe apart. They make mathematical sense but your mind just screams that such is impossible. It seems as absurd as suggesting that black is white, in fact you could say that they have suggested that in a sense. If god is real he's a fucking asshole for this.
Data's explanation contradicts itself. He says quantum realities split up in a continuing process but he also mentions a quantum signature that is unchangeable and always remains the same. But if the latter piece of information is, quantum realities cannot "pop up" but must have been there since the Big Bang or their signatures would be the same or have changed due to a particular event.
@HerrWagnerfreund or... lets just say the Big Bang never really happened and the universe is a space that exists in multiple parallel dimensions? Just say that it never split up it just existed. it existed and always remains the same.
You might not have understood me. Data says every parallel dimension ("Quantum reality") has its own unchangeable signature. That means that all those parallel dimensions are equally old and don't "pop up" from each other. The graphic he uses in the episode, however, shows exactly this process: realities splitting up due to the process of decision-making. (Which is also the theory in real world as I've understood it.)
@HerrWagnerfreund ok yeah i havent watched any star trek episodes.. feel trollish now even though I am not, i have no clue of any episodes of star trek. yeah they don't split up or anything was what i was trying to say.
i just wounded up here because a website described "data" as an intp and i was like really? somewhat but not exactly.
@HerrWagnerfreund which actually means that, in a way, predestination does exist, because every possible outcome takes place somewhere in time and space.
Exactly. This, however, destroys the message the entire Star Trek universe had delivered so far: chose to be a good man. Star Trek actually supports free will, but this very episode supports predestination. Didn't the authors see this contradiction?
@HerrWagnerfreund in a way yes and no, it is true that if this modern real life theory is true that every action is in a way "predetermind" because every possibility takes place. However, nothing says that just because an alternate action takes place somewhere else that you should not and could not chose your own destiny in this universe. I personally LOVE the questions and thoughts this theory provides, and really ST in a way is about opening your mind to new ideas.
But that was ONE universe. You could have called it an "alternate timeline", for example, which is different from an "alternate reality". Alternate timelines do not contradict the idea of free will. Alternate realities do. I'm always astonished how many fans love the idea of parallel universes. Don't they see the negative impact those have?
@HerrWagnerfreund I'm with johnkerry7 on this one...just because all possibilities did happen on some level of reality doesn't change the fact that you made a decision, and will only observe the results of the decision you made. you don't care about all the other realities. :)
You did NOT make a decision. That's the point. Free-will needs free decision. Free decision, however, needs alternatives. What do I mean? You have a range of possibilities out of which you can chose one. And this one possibility you chose becomes reality. All the other possibilites you have not chosen do not become reality. Quantum physics states that ALL possibilities become reality. Therefore, choice doesn't really exist. You might not care about this but it is as it is.^^
@HerrWagnerfreund hmm I disagree. in any given quantum reality/world, you will only observe one choice, the one that you believed yourself to have made. in other quantum realities, you made other decisions, and that is a different you. So this doesn't really change free will.
@HerrWagnerfreund lol at this particular contradiction disturbing you, star trek is prob full of contradictions of physics and even its own plot. anyways you said that Quantum physics states that ALL possibilities become reality. but more scientists accept the other interpretation (copenhagen) according to wikipedia
Prepare to be geeked out!!! Quantum Reality is associated with the theory of cosality, where every action has an infinite number of reactions in different times, locations, dimensions, and realities.
In another universe me and Chuck Norris rode on a robot unicorn while we attacked and succesfully annihilated a mutant mixture of Justin Bieber, Rebecca Black, Edward Cullen, Lady gaga, Miley Cirus, the Jonas Brothers, and a dragon using an awesong power combo of double rainbows, dividing by zero, and falcon punches and were congradulated by Elvis, Abraham Lincoln, and Indiana Jones in the holodeck of the Starship Enterprise.
If we go back the moment where the universes was created, one thing that could happen was that only this universe was created, so if everything that can happens happen, then there exist no alternative universes. Problem solved.
@jkirkdorton Yeah, it all makes sense. Perhaps there is an exception to the exception because if no universe is created, nothing can happen and then nothing would be possible, which again makes it impossible that no universe was created.
@jonathanleon111 Or, that the universe was created just now with my message ready, or that the universe was never created because it always existed, or that only the most impossible happens, because a particle following a straight line through space and time is less probable by random chance than a random universe created with my message written, and writing this message in a normal universe is even more impossible, which is probably why it happens.
Not intending to be nitty-gritty.... but one would think that in the mid-to-late 24th century, any space-faring civilization would at least have brushed on the topic of quantum realities. I mean, we've had literature of it even in the 1960's I believe...
... but then again how could one expect a mere ship's counselor to know about all that (she's the one who asked in the first place). But then again, everyone else in the room looked just as clueless! XD
@rkmugen I don't think they looked stupified because they didn't know the subject being discussed... They were just amazed at how much of a dumbass Troi can be.
sciency, I don't believe in this theory, moreover if I did believe it, it would not be our choices that change it, but the choices of neutrinos or other minor materials. It is not as if our choices are important. Our choices are based on things that happen inside us, like energy being moved, it is not as if we are important and out choices would make a difference. Great explanation though :)
I can imagine that one day I'm walking on the beach with my true love and i'm incredibly happy, but then I decide to take a gun out and shoot myself for the hell of it.
You are suggesting, that this has happened, despite the fact that it would have absolutely no logical cause? If we take a purely secular point of view then I am the simply the sum of my genetics and the events of my life, and thus very predictable, a constant. There's not going to be much variance in my choices.
@waldoman7 The logical cause could be that there was a trigger in your mind that prompted to shoot yourself, and it would be put down to a psychotic episode rising to the surface. We all have the potential to lose our minds, so in your described quantum reality, thats what happened and would be written into history. There are an almost infinite number of quantum realities, shooting yourself maybe a spur of the moment thing or your greatX100 mama was a nut, a different woman to in this reality.
@tubehows4life the fact that you've managed to concoct some way how that MIGHT happen(and I find it questionable anyway) is missing the point. I'm sure I can imagine some scenario for which you could not come up with an explanation.
@waldoman7 Woah easy there Mr. Skeptizmo, I wasnt expecting such a hostile response. What do you mean"concoct"? I offered a couple of possible explanations for your scenario, and there are a myriad more. If you can imagine a scenario I cant explain, maybe someone else can or that there are still many possible explanations. Why are you so defensive about this quantum reality concept? Are you religious?
A very fine and noble reason for studying this subject matter further...WE MUST ALL OF US FIND A WAY INTO THAT PARTICULAR REALITY...SERIOUSLY THAT KID IS LIKE THE WESLEY CRUSHER OF REAL LIFE
You know, I've heard of this theory before, just from watching the Science channel...It seems to me every single person in Starfleet 300 years in the future should be at least familiar with the brief description given by Data.
@sebastian2508 I'm not saying they shouldn't. But to use all the main characters as surrogates for the audience is sloppy writing, and makes all the other main characters look dumb, genius. Usually, that's Riker's job: "Time travel..." "...and there's nothing we can do to stop them" "charming woman."
I hate how almost all descriptions of such theories depend on the concept of "our choices" making the differences between them. Human conscious choice is no more influential over the state of reality than the random movement of gas particles or the fluctuations in gravity from a galaxy billions of miles away. Any source of chaos is an influence on the state of an event.
@AZTEKZ true in a way. But I myslef would have never looked this up if I dated the last guy i liked or truly any person because then i would not have a major crush on Data and want to hear every word he says! LOL but i do not feel that every prossably happens somewhere else. Just choose and can't go back but can change futher events through change in path you are going in life.
theory cant be true. if all possibilities that can happen do happen then there had to be an event in at least one of the other infinite universes that destroyed all the other universes. we shouldn,t be here. checkmate
this theory is poopy..... so youre saying out of all the crazy ass realitys and things that we could have been having, we just happen to have this one? this sucks.... we're all gonna DIE
Actually this is a real theory. It has many supporters. Problem is it contradicts pre-existing theories including the theory of relativity. Still for me it's too early to tell if it i truth or a complete and utter failure.
I could be taller then four foot in a different reality or I could be a guy or I could be the sexiest girl in the world hahahaha!!!!

XD
rkmugen 1 year ago
@rkmugen I don't think they looked stupified because they didn't know the subject being discussed... They were just amazed at how much of a dumbass Troi can be.

@LordVader89 So say we all.

@rkmugen Feynman said to the effect that if you are not baffled by quantum theory you do not understand any of it.

So in an alternate reality, I bang Data...sweet
taraj123 1 year ago 2
sciency, I don't believe in this theory, moreover if I did believe it, it would not be our choices that change it, but the choices of neutrinos or other minor materials. It is not as if our choices are important. Our choices are based on things that happen inside us, like energy being moved, it is not as if we are important and out choices would make a difference. Great explanation though :)
Simgenx 1 year ago
@Simgenx
it's not even about changing anything.
in quantum phisics it's all about what COULD have happend,if we had done something different.
and if you can imagine it,it HAS happened.only in another reality.
and every decision we make, creates another alternate reality.
but everything we DID'NT do,also create it's own alternate reality.
so,take 7 bilion people making decisions every moment of every day.
and multiplie that by the same amount.
and than you stil are not even close to the number
marc0871 1 year ago
I can imagine that one day I'm walking on the beach with my true love and i'm incredibly happy, but then I decide to take a gun out and shoot myself for the hell of it.
You are suggesting, that this has happened, despite the fact that it would have absolutely no logical cause? If we take a purely secular point of view then I am the simply the sum of my genetics and the events of my life, and thus very predictable, a constant. There's not going to be much variance in my choices.
waldoman7 10 months ago
@waldoman7 The logical cause could be that there was a trigger in your mind that prompted to shoot yourself, and it would be put down to a psychotic episode rising to the surface. We all have the potential to lose our minds, so in your described quantum reality, thats what happened and would be written into history. There are an almost infinite number of quantum realities, shooting yourself maybe a spur of the moment thing or your greatX100 mama was a nut, a different woman to in this reality.
tubehows4life 9 months ago
@tubehows4life the fact that you've managed to concoct some way how that MIGHT happen(and I find it questionable anyway) is missing the point. I'm sure I can imagine some scenario for which you could not come up with an explanation.
waldoman7 9 months ago
@waldoman7 Woah easy there Mr. Skeptizmo, I wasnt expecting such a hostile response. What do you mean"concoct"? I offered a couple of possible explanations for your scenario, and there are a myriad more. If you can imagine a scenario I cant explain, maybe someone else can or that there are still many possible explanations. Why are you so defensive about this quantum reality concept? Are you religious?
tubehows4life 9 months ago
@tubehows4life
I don't see how you could possibly perceive the slighest bit of hostility in that.
waldoman7 9 months ago
@waldoman7 Ok then, no problem.

A very fine and noble reason for studying this subject matter further...WE MUST ALL OF US FIND A WAY INTO THAT PARTICULAR REALITY...SERIOUSLY THAT KID IS LIKE THE WESLEY CRUSHER OF REAL LIFE

You know, I've heard of this theory before, just from watching the Science channel...It seems to me every single person in Starfleet 300 years in the future should be at least familiar with the brief description given by Data.
mharbaugh 1 year ago 7
@mharbaugh this is a show, genius. they have to explain the theory to the audience who has no clue.
sebastian2508 1 year ago
@sebastian2508 I'm not saying they shouldn't. But to use all the main characters as surrogates for the audience is sloppy writing, and makes all the other main characters look dumb, genius. Usually, that's Riker's job: "Time travel..." "...and there's nothing we can do to stop them" "charming woman."
mharbaugh 1 year ago
LOL.. All of them looking at Data all clueless. Hahahaha..
Now picture this same scene but with Crusher and Troi nude with those stoic expressions on their faces as the scene progresses. LOL.
fanirama 1 year ago
I hate how almost all descriptions of such theories depend on the concept of "our choices" making the differences between them. Human conscious choice is no more influential over the state of reality than the random movement of gas particles or the fluctuations in gravity from a galaxy billions of miles away. Any source of chaos is an influence on the state of an event.
AZTEKZ 1 year ago
@AZTEKZ random fluctuations of gas particles would spawn new universes as well.
nbonaparte1 1 year ago
@AZTEKZ true in a way. But I myslef would have never looked this up if I dated the last guy i liked or truly any person because then i would not have a major crush on Data and want to hear every word he says! LOL but i do not feel that every prossably happens somewhere else. Just choose and can't go back but can change futher events through change in path you are going in life.
BethVidz 1 year ago
theory cant be true. if all possibilities that can happen do happen then there had to be an event in at least one of the other infinite universes that destroyed all the other universes. we shouldn,t be here. checkmate

quantum string theory
branfrog 2 years ago
Actually this is a real theory. It has many supporters. Problem is it contradicts pre-existing theories including the theory of relativity. Still for me it's too early to tell if it i truth or a complete and utter failure.
