  • @nathcarter @tofunder Thank you so much for your posts. I was confused by the video but now I understand better owing to your explanations. Thanks! :)

  • This video makes reminds me of Colin Buchanan singing 1 Cor 6:19-20

    "'Look, Lord. See my shells.'

Shells schmells! It’s what you do for God that counts.

    Don’t waste your life!

That’s what this verse is all about..."

  • This may sound childish, but this video makes me afraid of life, that its earthly in my hands and that i might bulls it up, ahh i hope i am really Christian and am not just deceiving myself.

  • @SuperOlivess I often ask myself the same question. Good trees bear good fruit but so far I haven't seen any in my life... It makes me fret a lot.

    God bless!

  • If we trust in God he will look after us and provide our basic needs. Whatever extra we accumulate is designed to give us temporary happiness and security. I don't think there is anything wrong in having nice things but just don't let it be the focus of your life. Chasing these things can only distract us from the real reason we are alive: to live a good life according to God, to love God, love our fellow man and obey God's basic laws.

  • God blesses us when we do his work, but to expect our wants and desires to be met by God for doing so is not biblical. God will meet your needs through his blessing. I feel our wants and desire is to find joy in God by being content in and serving God. And content in his ultimate gift of salvation through Jesus Christ. God gives us stuff to be able to glorify him with it. (So, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God. 1 Corinthians 10:31)

  • @wildcatjon2000 I may have miss-read your meaning at first. I think God promises to fulfill my deepest desires - but He also plans to change them - to tear me away from cheap desires and temporary amusements, and implant a deep love for the only thing that can really satisfy - God Himself.

  • The point of the video is to spend your time seeking God over and above a nice house, car, early retirement, etc. The American Dream, as with the Australian Dream, or pretty much any dream of most people in the Western Civilization, is to seek comfort. If you know anything of what Piper preaches about, you would know he says our goal should be to seek joy in God, and this joy, rest, peace etc. far outweighs any comfort this "Dream" can offer. God DOES want us to have joy - joy in him!

  • Luke 12:19-21

It's a hard word, but not because it's harsh. But only because here in Sydney storing up riches is too close to our (and my) heart.

  • Think the point is to put all you wants and desires on the back burner and put your effort towards serving God. Along with desiring to be closer to God. The one thing we have to remember is this stuff doesn't belong to us anyways. It belongs to God. It is simply on loan to us. And if we are not serving God with what we have what are we doing it with it.

  • @wildcatjon2000 Should not our wants and desires be found in serving God?

  • What an utterly disgusting guilt trip. As if God doesn't want people to enjoy themselves, or to have hobbies, or retire whenever they want to.

  • @toenailclipping I don't know if it's so much a guilt trip as a reminder that whatever we accomplish in this life, whatever we gain by our Earthly endeavours... we can't take any of it with us. And we can't justify our salvation with our Earthly possessions. Yes, it's alright to have the dream. But Piper is saying don't make it your only dream. Don't make it your one goal. Because after your sweet ride and your awesome house in the suburbs and your retirement nest egg... what do you have?

  • @nathcarter I understand what you're saying. But who ever tries to make claims to the contrary? Who thinks the can "take it with them"? Who thinks their possessions can "justify our salvation"? To answer your question, if you have a sweet ride and an awesome house, what do you have? You have a sweet ride and an awesome house! LOL!

  • @toenailclipping I don't think anyone tries to make claims to the contrary, so much as they don't care enough to make any such claim. He's railing against religious apathy, against the concept of being so concerned with the world that you forget to tend to the soul. Yes, you have a sweet ride and an awesome house, but the point Piper is making is, that's all you'll ever have if you spend all your time being concerned with getting that.

  • @toenailclipping There is no reason to be guilty for those who are in Christ Jesus. If you believe the things you want are the things God wants you to have, then go ahead. The people described in the article do not care about the things of eternity. They are only worried about serving themselves and catering to their own desires. They have bought into the popular belief of many Americans that a nice house, car, etc are ultimate goals.

  • @tofunder Nor should anyone else feel guilty about any of the things mentioned in this video, whether they are "in Christ" or not.

How do you know anything about these people, other than the very few details mentioned? The speaker didn't even make the claims you do about them, that they don't care about the "things of eternity". How in the world would you know that?
