and i saw your comment about hiphop..i feel the same about some bigger artists, but check out some northwest underground (theres some in my favorites). quite good :)
@rascally5 thanks man. i'll have a look at your page when i get a second. i do love hiphop but haven't heard any good stuff in a while. i prefer the older Detroit style. j dilla and s villa are my fav. tribe and de la soul etc. love all that stuff
@pennyshill im a big tribe fan too. but yeah man good stuffs out there you just have to search around a bit. if you happen to like any of the stuff on my page just drop me a line and ill give you some other artists you might be into
That is really cool. Got a 7D that can do 60fps, so I'm going to convert to 24fps in Cinema Tools, then slow that down into even slower with optical flow with Motion. Got to find some fast activity first. That is cool. So I see they are selling that song 'About Today' on your vid. Did you download it or have it already? I'd like to use that.
@onjoFilms haha thats funny i just got a 7D last week. AMAZING camera. 60p slow mo is great. check out beanpole productions in my friend list. He is my cousin and he's doing great stuff with the 7D... I actually bought the National Album. would recommend you do the same. Im not into downloading free music unless its hiphop or dance.. i feel the National deserves my $ where as 50 cent does not. Cheers mate ill keep an eye on your work.
@pennyshill I'm looking for a 7d on ebay (cause I'm cheap lol) and trying to find a good lens but no more than $500. I have no idea what lenses are good especially for recording HD. Could you help me out? Very nice video btw, love optical flow.
it was shot at 120fps.... when it says 1/4 time that is its real time playback speed.. the very first bit of footage is actually playing at 4 times the speed!!!... basically when shooting make sure your shutter speed is really high to avoid motion blur...import footage into your edit program then deinterlace it... export the footage and then import that into motion or shake.. apply optical flow... that's it. good luck
@pennyshill Ill be honest with you, I dont think enough people understand you need a good amount of frames per second to get good smooth motion. For instance my camera has 3 fps settings. 1: 24, 2: 30, 3: 60. Now obviously if I was interested in doing this witch I am. I would used 60 to gets more frames to analyze and create.
no it was more like 5 % at the slowest point. I'm not sure that 1/16 is right. a friend of mine said it was but i dont think it is haha. its really slow anyways :) i dont have the motion file anymore so can't check sorry. basically i pushed it to its limits for this test.
I have received many questions about problems with optical flow. The Main problem people are having is jumpy, blury interlaced slow motion. YOU MUST DE-INTERLACE VIDEO before importing into motion and applying optical flow. this should fix the problem 90% of the time. Also make sure your scratch disk is set up properly as optical flow creates huge amounts of data for small amounts of footage :)
No its all done in Motion before bringing it into FCP for music and edit. The de interlace in motion works better in my opinion. leave FCP for straight editing rather than effects. So import footage into Motion. De-interlace it then export it. then import it again into motion. hope this helps. send me a message for more details if you like.
The technology of Optical Flow in Motion actually came from shake i believe. so yes Shake can do this i'm pretty sure. I don't think after effects can but not 100%
well after effects has something similar, but its not as good (but don't take my word for it yet, I've never used the AE one). The only thing is, when you're using Optical Flow, you have to treat the footage like it's being shot on high-speed, i.e use a high enough shutter speed so that you get crisp-looking frames as opposed to softer, blended looking ones. I see professionals with 30+ thousand dollar cameras making the same mistake. It's really sad. but yeah.
That's exactly right. this one has a shutter of 200 i think so not too much blur. The reason i posted this was it was recorded in very low light (torch light shining up through the shot) and i was very impressed with motions ability to actually smooth everything out. its quite amazing when it works. and yes don't get me started on guys who have access to expensive equip/cameras that don't have a clue what there doing or have no artistic talent at all. sad indeed.
Ha ha I know, right? Another thing that annoys me (not as much but still) is people who use the wrong framerates. I mean really, tell me how much more could have been done wrong here: Rap music video (should be 24fps with a high shutter speed) at 30 fps with a shutter speed of like 1/30. Basically looks really blurry and smooth, the complete opposite of the desired effect. And, it was shot on a RED One. Hmph. Still waiting for that Scarlet to come out...
Yeah, you have to make sure you have your shutter speed up as high as possible, then, in post, de-interlace your video so you don't have those lines of resolution popping up. It really makes all the difference.
thankyou. i will have some more examples of optical flow up here soon. Ive got some footage of dirt bikes riding through water that looks even more amazing than this :)
this was never about smoking. its about the optical flow application in motion 3. The smoking shot was picked because of the complexity of the smoke and the fact that it would be hard to fake with animation. its a test basically. Also i don't smoke anymore :) And this wasn't an easy shot to photograph with this camera by the way. If it makes smoking appealing to you then you probably already smoke!
AppleShakeGuru has a tutorial. watch trampoline bikes remix on my other videos for a super slow motion example. all done with optical flow. no slow motion was recorded in camera
people keep asking about the song!!! its by "The National" and its called 'About today' .. please buy the album if you can you won't regret it. they are a great band and deserve your hard earned Ca$h :)

Hey man, awesome clip! The smoke looks beautiful in slow-mo. May I ask what frame-rate you were shooting at? Was it above 60fps?
And, if it's not too much bother, would you be able to tell me the full process you went through before implementing the optical flow in motion?

but it makes smoking look appealing... why would that be good footage?

I doesn't make it look more appealing to me. It's all in the eyes of the beholder but the song made it seem more sad than optimistic (to me).

Oh. The song was kinda neutral from my perspective.
