Lol, that's so lame! Marlee is not representing herself, she's portraying a character who may be an oral. Not every Deaf people are signing, some of them are oral, so Marlee will perform orally to suit the story. Sometimes we see people like Jackie Chan speaking English.. I don't see people getting mad because he's not speaking Chinese.

@Cali990carver...if you read my notes again carefully, I said whats wrong with living in both worlds. Yes, there are separate worlds for the deaf and hearing but anyone is free to spend his/her time in either world. Im deaf too but my family is hearing and I pretty much spent most of my life in the hearing world; my choice. I went to school for the deaf but it was during weekdays at daytime only and the rest was in the hearing world. Hope it helps clearing the waters.

Did it ever occur to you that Marlee had her speech therapy in her youth and couldnt help it if she was skilled in it? In Additional, I think Martlin Marlee is a great role model in both side of world. She show the hearing world what Deaf are capable of... and of course she shows the diversity of many different life style in deaf world. I am proud of her. None of us will have gotten this far without her. Because of her, I became Realtor because she proved the hearing world that deaf CAN do anything but hear... it includes SPEAK. I can SPEAK to bring the balance in both world. Thank you Martlin Marlee.

Ahem, this is nonsense. I am deaf myself, there is nothing wrong with individual to make the choice between deaf and hearing world. I am standing in the middle because I was raised by a blind mother who required me to speak with my voice so she can acknowledge what I need to communicate about but she speak in sign language in exchange. I work in hearing world and of course I had to read the lips to keep up with the people as much as I can. Interpreter isn't always available. So, ...She's good.

Get over yourself. When you blame others like Marlee, you are only disempowering yourself. She has nothing to do with what bothers you. She has the right to live her life, and she certainly has never abandoned ASL. Leave Marlee alone. She is pressured to please both the hearing and the deaf world now that she is famous. I don't understand what the big problem with Marlee speaking and not signing is. I'm a big fan of hers and I think she's breaking down walls between the hearing and the deaf. Plus, I've only seen her in maybe two things where she doesn't sign, and that's nothing compared to her immense amount of work.

It's good to voice your opinion, I concur that there should be more representation of ASL in movies and less talking, but be careful you don't tread into Crab Theory waters (watch Jon Lenois' Video: "I Love Crab Theory!").

I researched compare between well know stars and Marlee Matlin and I realized she is more like personality and reality in TV rather than in movies and TV movies. I forgot someting more to comment. She even accepted Oscar award for her part in Children of Lesser God. That title is insulting to us. Hearies are children of higher god? They're jokers. Most of them can't dream in color. They have lower spatial skills and lower peripherial visions. Don't even know beautiful sign language. Workers perform worse in noisy environment as researchers showed. Lot of money have spend on building noisy barrier walls, etc. Are they better than us?

I think the title is supposed to be satirical or sarcastic. Her character in Children of a Lesser God felt that most hearing people thought that way. The film was making the point that thinking that way is ignorant and ridiculous.

All the hearing people I know dream in color, and a lot of us are doing our best to learn beautiful sign language. It's all about education.

I have no problem with deafies who can lipread or speak as long as they cherish ASL. But, I agree with you that I, like you, have problem with any actor/actress in TV or movies to say they can lipread or speak, because it can lead hearies thinking that oral schools do good for deaf children. Oral schools are endangering to our language, culture, identity, and esteem. It's not about jealousy. I can lipread and speak, but refuse to do so. We've been oppressed since infamous 1880 Milan Conference.

I came across this vlog and I do agree with you. Marlee Matlin has put down the Deaf people by "speaking and lipreading" for years after her famous Children of Lesser God. One thing doesn't make sense to me... WHY she drags around her highly paid interpeter around while she does the "Speaking and Lipreading" thing? She is using "Pity me, I'm deaf but I can talk and lipread" tag on herself to advance her snooty ass up the ladder! I relate with ya on this!
