@termogard So unless you want Russia to be seen as untrustworthy, Imperialists, and backstabbers, i think it's in their best interest to hand over the Isles- at the very least the border agreed upon in 1855, as Russia also annexed the Japanese half of Sakhalin, another violation of treaty.

@termogard Medvedev called for the chain to be reinforced "in order to ensure the security of the islands as an integral part of Russia". You don't do this under peacetime conditions unless you perceive a threat, considering the only threat to the Islands are Japan's territorial claims, thats pretty much the smoking gun to say Russia deployed reinforcements in response to a perceived threat from Japan.

Medvedev did not say about " a threat from Japan". ;-) We are closest neihbours (by comparison to the USA) and there are no reasons for Russia to be afraid of Japan. ;-)

@termogard So in order to protect Russia from the US, they...reinforce a disputed Island on Japan's doorstep? You truly can't belive such rubbish, a defence against the US would be to fortify the arctic circle to intercept ICBMs, not fortify a small fishing village with conventional artillery. It was done to make a political point, a point that had to be made because Russia perceived a threat from Japan's claims to the islands.

@XxxSakura101 Generally speaking, you think in a right direction ;-) Russia reinforces counter-ICBMs measures as well as military equipment located on Kuril isles. Say, as countermeasures for routs of US submarines. ;-) Once again : Russia aren't afraid of Japanese JSDF . Even nowadays, Russian bombers accomplish routine flyovers a mainland of Japan, above international waters. Having such a small territory filled by nuclear powerplants, any attempt to attack Russia would be suicide for Japan.

@termogard The sad part is the entire situation could be defused if Russia would give Japan back it's 1855 borders, while Japan allows Russia to have ownership of the Northern chain and the part of Sakhalin above the 50' parallel. This would effectively eliminate Japan's main complaint, while allowing Russia to keep most of its conquests.

@termogard It was acually an anti-war/pacifist demonstration. Japan has a very large pacifist population who are opposed to any sort of military and demands a very strict interpretation to article 9. Under their interpretation, Article 9 states that Japan can not have a military at all, and hosting it'sally's bases in their view makes them susceptible to an outside attack. The US base(s) are just one of several stops for the group that frequents such action.

@termogard As i've stated before, US and Japanese relations are at an all-time high, however your refusal to accept those statistics, and instead carder to smaller groups that represent a minority paints a picture of denial about you. I think you just want someone to blame all of your problems on the US and paint them as the 'bad guy' so you don't have to admit your own faults.

If you personally think that USA is "a best ally of all times" for Japan, this is only your personal opinion as a citizen of the USA. As for "own faults" , Russians fought japanese army in 1945, not innocent people of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Can you see a difference between combatants and civilians? No?

@termogard The Soviets attacked Japan under it's own set-set terms, and violated its half of the Yalta treaty that ensured adherence to the non-colonized Japanese territory and free elections in Eastern Europe. Further, under what internationally recognized agreement does a nation have the right to carve up another's lands? The Soviets attacked Japan after the Emperor had agreed to sign a ceasefire, and appeared on the radio and told his men to stop fighting. It was a Soviet landgrab.

Another point: communism in essence does not leave much room to improve or to rapidly grow an economy. Capitalism rewards independence and innovation and causes an economy to grow fast with everyone persuing their own goals and competing.
In communist systems people are not adequately rewarded for hard work or inspired to add to the market; they're stuck working where the government decides they can, and they have few opportunities to change.

As for the Russo-Japanese war, Russia would have won it, without being pushed out, had Nicholas II and his entourage paid attention to the received intelligence information. At the end of December 1903 the Russian General Staff knew that Japan had prepared for a military conflict; the Staff accurately predicted the date of the war and proposed plans to prepare a campaign against their Far Eastern neighbour. However, neither plan was completed - a big mistake of the Russian government.
