The Rolling Stones do a great live cover that's posted here on YouTube. Mick plays a vintage Gibson, Ronnie on steel, and Charlie giving it a Ray Price shuffle beat. Really awesome!
Anybody know who sings the lead on this version? Love the voice. This is my absolute favorite Bob Wills song, and the only one I dared to cover. As a kid I heard Gene Autry's version, and had to do some growing before I discovered Bob Wills. The name was unknown in Jersey then, and is now. before I got a computer, it was next to impossible to buy a decent old_ country CD.
@fractuss Yes it is just you. This is one of the people who started it all. What would you consider country music? Rascal Flatts? Waylon said it best. When you're in Texas Bob Wills is still the King.
just awesome!!! country love song, a great melody in the verses that takes of in the chorus then comes right back into the verse for more. just awesome!!! great post
A few years ago i drove down to texas to see a friend of mine who was visiting his elderly Aunt. I told him we were in the land where Bob Wills was still the king. He didn't know what i meant so i told him how popular Bob was in Texas years ago and I said your Aunt would know who i was talking about. He said he doubted it. So when we were all at breakfast i asked her if she liked Bob Wills and she said she had all his records and did we want to listen to one.. She has passed on bless her heart.
The song dates from a 1935 recording called "Spanish Two Step." Three years later the rearranged the song to change it and recorded as the San Antonio Rose, a fiddle instrumental. In 1940 the song was recorded again by the band, which was now featuring horsn and arrangements. This version had a vocal and was called The New San Antonio Rose.
So how would Bob Wills living in rural Texas have heard a French song...before 1935?
@radiobob805 During the settlement of Texas there were French, German, and some other nationalities that had towns. The Spanish didn't seem to care, until
Texans decided that they didn't want to be ruled by Mexico and to be told what to
do and to be taxed by a government they did not recognize. There were many songs from these different cultures being sung, and redone all over Texas. A
little history lesson I received from the people I lived with when I first came
The Texas War for Independence was as much about the Mexican government's prohibition on slavery as taxes. It's estimated that at the time of the War Texas had roughly 30,000 Anglos who owned 6,000 slaves. The Mexican government threatened to send troops to enforce the prohibition, and war was the result. Certainly there were other issues, including taxes, but keeping their slaves was an important one.
In the first verse it says."A moonlit path that only she would know." That's what he speaks of later when he says, "For that moolit path by the Alamo."
Thanks for posting the recording and the video backing & the lyrics.
One lyric correction: It's "moonlit pass," not "moonlit path." It's hard to hear the difference on the record, but Wills published the sheet music too. It's definitely "pass."
Bob Certainly di sing...on many records. His best I think was "My Confession."
His favorite song to perform was "Sittin On Top of The World."
He's a nice man. I met him on four occasions, including being present at the 1960 recording session that produced the second album featuring Bob and Tommy. Tommy Duncan was a hero to me. The core was Bob on Fiddle, Leon on steel, and tommy on Vocals.
My mistake! The Stones cover is Waylon Jennings song Bob Wills Is Still the King. Sorry! But it's still awesome!

@fractuss Back in OUR days this was "Country and Western". That is about as C & W as you get. the stuff today is "Country" not as good as this.

I have listened to multiple versions, including several by Bob Wills himself. It's Moonlit Path. Crosy says that, and he used the sheet music.
However Carl Smith says "moonlit pass"
Since tommy says Path, that's what it is...since Bob saw those lyrics on the screen, it must be correct.
A path beside the alamo makes much more sense, there's no pass there..

You can hear the grand ole opry in nashville Tennessee,
Its the home of country music on that some folks agree.
But when you cross that old red river hoss that just don't mean a thing,
Cause once you're down in Texas, Bob Wills is still the king.
