As a former professional LEGO model builder (worked for the company) I can tell you that the "hammer" actually has a rubber end - essential for constructing the large display models. The plates have to fit together perfectly, no cracks, otherwise it's not stable. If you had to put thousands of these things together every day, I assure you, you wouldn't be relying on your fingers to do it!
