One night at the Grand Ole Opry, there was a huge storm. Word came that many streets were closed and people were advised to stay were they were until the water went down. Marty stayed and sang for hours to entertain them until they were told it was safe to go.
I will save her yet he cried Bess at least shall know I tried And for her sake he halted In the shadow of a hill From a limb a twig he broke, And he dipped his pen of oak In the warm blood that was spurting From the wound above his heart "Arouse before too late The Apache warriors lay in wait Goodbye, Bess, God bless you darling," And he felt the cold chills start.
My mother used to sing this song, among many others, to us kids. There was one verse that is not included in this one. Lower and lower sank the sun He drew rein at rocky run Here those men met death my Chappo And he started on again So will those we go to warn And the coming of the morn If I fail God help my Bessie And he gave his horse the rein. @enjoythewildUSA Close your eyes and the West appears through Marty's songs. Always my favorite and major influence in my singing. I got to see Marty in concert just before he passed. What a performer! He was the ultimate showman. God bless him.
Greetings from the Beautiful Caribbean TARQUIN Ismiled at the Quest how long youve been a Mrty fan From the time we heard Shackles N Chains we knew that this was someone special the BEST SINGER And Story teller of All time LORD WE THANK YOU FOR Marty ROBBINS
Whether it was because he was a man of the west himself, there was no doubt that Marty had a special feel for the western songs he sang. Many other singers tried, but nobody came close to the way he could put these songs across or indeed write them like he did.
tarquin45, I have to wonder if you were always a Marty Robbins fan or may have discovered him after his death. Either way, you have brought back many memories for me.
This amazing man was my Elvis. I cried at his passing, and I mourn him still. Thank you.
The melody for this is the same as Private Wilson White that Marty also does. Both great songs.
