OMG I clicked in this just to see a different end to the 2007 version! and look what a bad taste has this one!! indeed seemed like a bad vampire porn movie! and mr Tilney... no comparison to the 2007.
by the way... Catherine looks like one of those crazy eyed dolls you throw into the closet at night. :P
That was kinda sexy: It had Mr Tilney entering bouncing on a horse, the fog, the whispering voices, ugly toad eyed Catherine and an ugly little child.
@hyacinthdibley I don't like the tone of this Mr. Tilney. A disgrace? She made a mistake but it isn't something that would disgrace woman kind. I watched the version with JJ Fields first. This is a shadow of that one. This one is painful in comparison. I can't find my book but does he really say, "disgrace?" A disgrace in those times would a girl getting pregnant before marriage but hardly a condemnation of all of woman kind for her innocent error. I don't like this Mr. Tilney.
@Songsmirth Yes. I think he did say 'disgrace'. I think we will both agree that this Tilney dude is a complete 'something'hole. He better watch his tongue or else, lol.
Anyway, I prefer Fields' better. I watched it first and it's a lot better in my opinion.
-the guy looks better
-the guy is better mannered
-the guy does not give 'creepy' looks.
Need i go on?
I'm glad the second was the better one because it would have been quite a disgrace if this version came out second.
@hyacinthdibley I do understand your reaction to this, but I do think the writers through the use of 'disgrace' are meant in reference to Catherine being frank and open, whichwould be frowned upon as indiscrete or impolite in that period where it was more acceptable for women to be coy and reserved. Her frankness is why she is an attractive character.
Except for the hair and costumes, which I always felt had a late seventies look to it (and not very authentic to Jane Austen era), I liked this version of Northanger Abbey better than the newer version. All the characters of this version are very vivid in my mind whereas I've already forgotten most of the supporting cast and most of what Mr. Tilney & Catherine said in the new version. In this older version, they had many discussions b/n Tilney & Catherine that were very interesting to follow.
I don't get how this is considered in any way to be like porn as a recall from the new version a particular bedroom scene was very much a suggestion of porn.
Well.. sorry but I dont have the same opinion.. I love this scene and this adaptation is way better than the 2007's movie. When I saw this BBC serie I went straigth to the book store and bougth the book!
In the 2007 adaptation the performances of the actors are terrible and not credible. And I think that we cant forget how many years this has...its a long way to 2010... Nevertheless the BBc serie captures perfectly the gothic essence of the book, compare to the 2007 film... Love it!
Yes, this version seems very cheezy to us now, but it's just a culture shock between the 1980s and 2000s...lol After I saw the new version, I loved it so much that I started reading the book. This movie would not have made me want to read it :)
Actually Peter Firth did fine, considering the awful music, the ugly actress, the stupid gothic scenes (that I have to fast forward because it makes me cringe). BUT, would Henry Tilney really kiss Catherine without officially asking her to marry him (in that time period)? Isn't that a bit scandalous?
This is just ridiculous. Northanger Abbey's supposed to be a satire of gothic novels, not a gothic novel itself. The music's terrible, the acting's sub-par, and this kiss is just scary. Look at her nostrils!
The most bazaar adaptation ever filmed of the Jane Austin novel! This could only have been produced during the 1980's. It's possible the producers were attempting a new contemporary 1980's twist (using the female lead, who IS very masculine looking; as transgender or gay character) which is absolutely hilarious! The dry ice rising as the two make-out with the "studio music" in the background - seems more like an early music video. Public taste does change but Jane Austin is ageless
Not a fan of this adaptation. The music is very strange (totally unfitting for a Jane Austen story), the acting is sub-par, and the actors weren't even all that good-looking. Is it me or does Catherine almost look like a man? Her profile and all are very masculine. If I didn't know she was a female and only saw therface, I could definitely mistake her for a man.
This adaptation is absolutely hilarious! Oh the 80s...That being said, I think the woman playing Catherine does a fair job, all things considered. I think it's the editing and music that really puts me off, but still, it's worth a watch. And a part of me approves of the gothic ending to this version as it fits the cheesiness of the whole thing.
Oh my goodness. If anyone were to come across this clip not knowing what it was they would think it was a 1980's music video instead of a Jane Austen classic.
I have to say that this is the most ridiculous version of ANY Jan Austen film that I have ever seen. The acting is poor, the characters are very strange looking and the music is just dumb. Plus some of the scenes in this movie ugh!! Newer version of this movie is millions of times better!
@xXxRANDOMxxAMANDAxXx hahahaha so true! I nearly pissed myself, I was laughing so hard... and then the kid comes in. What a terrible porno it would have been: they are both so hideous!
LOL I love this movie...its just crazy enough to meet my idea of a good movie! LOL! I really want to see the new one as well :-) I finished the book a few days ago
I definitely preffer JJ Field and Felicity Jones this doesnt look innocent at all they look like if they have been interrupeted when they were about to have sex by that kid I think the new version is sooooooooooo much better
miss morland dont be afraid i promise not to suppress you with too much supression blah blah blah....since you left the white bushes died....ok when i read the book it was sweet but i guess the actor who acts a part certainally do matter
oh SHIT MY STOMACH HURTS....LAUGHING TOO MUCH. i thought this was a horror movie too. and what the heck why she looks like that and the music oh god be ridden of all the bad directer who cant properly elicit a great book...weep weep
O my god I have to agree this was really creepy & disturbing. She looks STONED & its yuck the way she opens her eyes & stares at him when he is kissing her! The music was SOOOOO inappropriate. TERRIBLE

"I promise not to oppress you with too much remorse and too much passion. But, since you left us, the white rose bushes died with grief." Now, romantic, emotionally charged line like that, coupled with the 80's-esuqe music would have me swooning right there. Who on earth got paid to do this Austen butcher job...?!

An innitial reaction to this can be to think it's over the top and even laughable. But we can appreciate it more on a few other considerations:
-the adaptation is focused on Catherines naiveity,
-her time spent in her head with fantasies and scenes from romance horror novels she's read,
-her artless frankness.
This all collides at the peak of the 80s where ambient music was at it's most vulgar, emotions, hair and shoulder pads least censered.
