@collasal45 Yes, it is. Especially for people who are just starting out a let's play, who aren't comfortable talking to themselves, it's a good idea to do dual commentary with a friend. I didn't the first time I tried a let's play, and I felt a bit uninteresting (hence why I'm here). With yourself, you don't exactly know what to talk about, and it's difficult to be funny on your own. With a friend, it's a good change. Also you can do co-op and that's a whole lot better. I've done co-op before.
this is a great how to for making minecraft videos and i would love to be able to use that information (my laptop isn't great with minecraft haha). I liked, favorite, already subbed, and shared, not something i do often i would like to see another maybe if you ever find more tips to give :)
Brutally honest advice from one of the few successful "commoner's" minecrafter. BwBOO didn't hook me from the redstone creations (etho got that covered) or architecture (docm's territory) but rather from the conversational pace. I remember watching the first episode of Legendary Failures and thinking to myself "what a couple of jerks. they're playing minecraft exactly the same way that I do." Keep up the great work!
Excellent episode, B00; Thanks for picking apart your first ep to highlight the common mistakes that LPers make when starting off.
It's a good thing that you made so many in your first ep; If it was perfect, this video would have been pretty dull. :D
I only recently started my first MC LP, but despite not having the benefit of accessing this info, I think I did ok (apart from some umming and ahhing - At least I had the sense to skip the wood collection and make the video fairly short)
@GamerzCrafting shyness, like any fear, goes away with practice of facing it. If it's very hard to make any progress at all, just take small steps, do something that you are afraid to do or at least try to do it. If you happen to chicken out, then you have time to reflect on it and then next time you face it you're more likely to have an easier time doing it. The key is simply to keep on trying.
One type of video I would like to see is a LP that the guy uses notations to poke fun at himself. Bdoubleo does this a bit and those are SO FUNNY. Even if the LPer is not that great, in fact that even can make the video more hilarious. I think a person who doesn't take himself so seriously makes others like them even more. That is what makes Bdoubleo so great.
the thing is, there could be The best commentator starting a minecraft lets play as there begining videos, but since there is sooo many minecraft videos out there it might be overlooked.... :/
I think the best advice Young Bdubs could have got would be: make one to throw it away. It sounds harsh, but in what creative venture is your first attempt worthwhile? LPs have it pretty easy compared to, say, painters.
Doing a complete throw-away episode would work out technical kinks (like the render settings). More importantly, a frank assessment of the result would have shown you at least some of the problems. No-one’s first session is great, so why not start on the second?
One thing you didn’t mention is that your game sounds were way too loud. When I was unfamiliar with your voice, it was a real problem. Highlighting your own recorded voice is probably quite unpleasant to start with, but it’s part of the territory.
I liked the building-to-code thing. You could probably have got some mileage from building blatantly unrealistic things and talking about code-compliant details as if the whole thing was legit, but it’s a bit late now. :-)
If you want some exposure to your channel stop over to my letsplayvids website and send me a message. I have a featured let's play every few days and have previously featured Bdub and Guude.
It was as excruciating to watch that 'first episode' bit as it was the first time around. xP For a first episode, though, would it be best to just try to be funny, or introduce yourself, or what? How do begin the process of letting people get to know you?

I love ya, dude, but you say "Right off the bat" I don't know how many times. When I first watched this vid, (and I was one of your first subs) it drove me batty. hoho. :-)
I think a lot of people have forgotten how to have fun when making an LP. Most people try too much to impress people, and it comes off really odd. But having pure fun with a game and letting it show is much more enjoyable to watch (imo). :)
You should've also talked more about staying in the same place for too long. I actually really disliked your first, what, 30-40 videos? I remember it was basically just you caving/gathering resources non-stop until you built the Home Depot (which is where your series really started to pick up, in my opinion).
@yayimahuman They aren't in the description, they're in the related videos column. And the reason they're there, is because of the tags in the description match the title of those videos.

What render settings do you use in Sony Vegas? As in, what format/codec do you render with, what bitrate, etc. I feel like that would be mega helpful to most people.
I love giving constructive criticism to new Lets Plays and stuff, and its really great when someone with experience gives their own advice. Now I can try to relay some of this stuff along with my own opinions and sound a little less like an ass.
Can you do something like how you render your vids? I think I'm doing something wrong, I tried uploading a video of Cobalt, no editing, nothing but the vid and my commentary. As I put it to upload, it said that it would take something like 336 minutes, over 5 hours! I keep hearing the word rendering, so I'm wondering if there is another step before you upload a video. Please help me, I really want to start a series but 5 hours is way too long!
@PixelGamerZ33 rendering is what you do when you edit a vid. when you upload to here it will take ages and the time of how long changes all the time too
@PixelGamerZ33 rendering is what you do when you edit a vid. when you upload to here it will take ages and the time of how long changes all the time too
5) Make a note of things to say before you start, a few stories etc can help things flow nicely and avoid quiet spells. 6) Learn to edit well. Remove boring parts with no commentary. Tight editing can trim the length of a video down to the best parts. Think more of quality than quantity when editing. And finally the best audio tip I was given - turn the mic recording volume down from 100% to maybe 95%, this removes a lot of the "hiss" and sibilancy from too high a volume.
Some great advice BOO, respect for using one of your own videos & pointing out some flaws. Stuff I learnt quickly making my LP this last year 1) Have a plan for your episode no matter how big or small your goals are. 2) Always sound upbeat & positive, avoid "um's" and "ah's". 3) Be active on other channels the same way you expect others to be active on yours. Like, support, comment. 4) Don't spam other YouTuber's but get yourself out there. A nod or mention from a big channel helps wonders :-)
Just to be totally honest, based on your first episode, I wouldn't have predicted that you would have become as big as you are now on youtube. But it's nice to see that it all works out in the end!
I love this video, why? Because B double O is being extremely humble and honest with his viewers. I might go back and watch all of B double O's "Building with" series.
love it bdub, not planning on making an lp but i can imagine this would be great tips. from rewatching all of your old episodes your quality has always been one of the best, even with a crappy computer and not much knowledge of the game. bravo good sir. (:
The thing that got me watching was that you were going to bulid to code, your the only guy who i have watched every video of and now you tell me your stuff isn't legit?
I have no desire to make videos, but I still found this REALLY interesting. Part of my job is to teach, and I would kill to be able to hear some of my first lectures to learn from them, and how far I have come and recognize flaws I still have. I envy you for that, but I really liked how you shared that experience with others and turned it into a great teaching guide, that made this very interesting to me. Very well done, Bdub.
I haven't started but I have a cheap microphone that works, I have a really crap computer and I am not thinking about starting until I get a computer that can at least run far without lag.
I went back and watched 13.5 and liked it just for you doing this and i plan on going back to watch from episode 1 (i was a late subber) wel done bdub well done
@CampbellCrafts Not necessarily. If you have a good Mac like an i7 or Xeon Mac and you can run almost any game on the market then making Minecraft videos is easy! QuickTime for Mac comes with free Recording software and its great quality for the file size. If you have shitty PC that you have to play on low render settings upgrading is needed.
@DJparsons89 You have to have a great channel going first to get the shoutouts. In frustation, it's easy to overlook what you could improve, but all you have to do is do research and stick to it, try to improve, try to make it more like you want it to be. Speaking off my own view only, I'll say that minecraft LP'ing is a taken market. You have to come up with something really special to catch my attention. OOGE is the whole package for me. Sorry.
@Muskar2 Well ya of course you need to have a good channel to get a shout out! but i'm just saying right now some ppl are big because they got shout outs. Not because of what they do! Like Etho for example i heard of him because he built sick traps.
@DJparsons89 Shout outs fall under the category "promotion", and that can be achieved in many other ways than shout-outs. If you really want people to see what you did, you should just spend every waking hour on getting them to see what you did. Obviously that's very over-ambitious, but you get the point. Anyway, I agree with MrAntice and Avidya on this as well. Even though it may sound hard to accomplish, it's what there is to it, and it'll get easier eventually.
Also, it's nice to finally get an answer to some of the questions we all have. I have asked questions to other people before and it's like I'm the candle in the wind sometimes, getting ignored is never fun, especially when you are frustrated that something isn't working correctly, Thanks again for taking the time, this is why BdoubleO remains my favorite LPer he takes the time to help others and actually responds to comments.
It was this eppisode that got me into watching you, and I've seen everything except for around 46-50 cause I wasn't a big caving fan. It got me to watch guude, etho, beef, baj, Coe, and more
@BdoubleO100 I know you said that you use Fraps software and that you have a few extra edits and steps involved to make your videos. Try using Bandicams software, it's only 39$ and it doesn't record a black screen or reversed colors (Fraps did that to mine), or ay of the other bullcrap extra steps you need to do to make it better. I guarantee that you'll like Bandisoft's program better. :D
@gamezgamer perhaps skip the first 2 nights. It is always the same. Still record them, but don't commentate them and use them for a voice over extra that you can use when you have more people.
This is pretty informative. Looking in to starting a MC Let's Play, and these tips are important. Whole black screen and menu searching is a big no no from what I see in LPs, as well as not talking to fill in the low points. But always interacting and keeping focus on a goal often makes a great video, in my opinion.
I remember the early episodes of Building with BdoubleO. The show was called Building with BdoubleO, but he went through 40 episodes of dying in caves :D
07:48 you say that you have about 30 sec to a minute to get peoples attention wich i think is true but at the same time you say that you should get something cool build etc. but that would take a couple of episodes?
Sometimes, saving your file, closing Vegas and reopening it fixes the black screens. It might take a few times, but it should work. :3 Hope it helps, Bdubs. <3
Bdub this was really nice of you to do for all those inbox spammers and the people who felt bad spamming your inbox - they still had the same questions im sure :) thank you good man
This is nice and informative, but if I ever start up a lets play I'm just going to do it for fun, not going to worry about getting a big audience or whatever. That's the reason I started watching you, since you didn't seem to used to care about picking a "personality" or trying to impress people with your immensely intelligent jokes.

Why is it that everyone thinks a GOOD microphone picks up the noise in the background? a GOOD microphone will only pick up the person talking to it and it will pick him up in great quality and great volume, I know this since I have bought a somewhat professional microhpone for about $150 dollars and then bought a external audio card for it and it works great... (really good quality and it doesn't pick up ANYTHING in the background...)
This is a genuinely quality video... thanks Bdub for sharing with us these invaluable words of wisdom. Hopefully I'll be able to make good use of this advice.
I switched from Sony Vegas to Premiere Pro because of the Black Screens. I'm almost using the same export settings from Sony Vegas so the render times are about the same. But with Premiere Pro i don't have to re-render my project again because of a black screen.
@DJparsons89 All you have to do to fix the black screen is restart Vegas. Also you will know when you are going to get a black screen because the Fraps Codec will crash. As a habit I have just learned to save and restart vegas before I render and no longer have any issues :)
@Avidyazen well said. The way I am making mine is to have a redstone, a survival, a let's build and a let's play custom maps playlist as well as other games. Hmm I have a lot of time on my hands.

Shoot. I'm never gonna get my wife to agree to spending money on promoting my vid's. guess I'l remain obscure then. ah well. at least my family watches them :p
I'm not an LP'er, but I am an avid watcher (Bdub, VintageBeef, PauseUnpause, Zisteau, Yogscast, TobyTurner) and I can tell you from a watchers view point that good audio is HUGELY important. I will stop watching if it sounds like you're constantly blowing in the Mic when you talk. I'm an earbud user, so things like that actually hurt my ears.
Also, I just love how genuinely nice BdoubleO seems. :)
@bartekbaree That statement makes no sense. People were saying this when I started in Oct 2010. Bdub started only a few months ago. If he would have listened to this advice we wouldn't have his great series to watch.
A more accurate statement is we don't need anymore copycat LPs. Do your own thing and do it well.
@bartekbaree I'd watch more minecraft LP'ers out there if there were more LP's that had a nice flow/quality to them. Bdubs is right in a lot of his self critique. the vid's has to have at least some polish on it. it does not have to be totaly unique. but it needs to flow naturally. stopping to check recipies and settings is a big nono. if a section is booring. fast forward it. and for goodness sake. don't make an entire 15 minute+ episode of nothing. always have a goal in mind for the episode.
@MrAntice I agree with you on that. I honestly think there is just too let's players many that.. don't have that thing to make a good minecraft lp. Now that we've seen about everything about minecraft and the game I have to say is getting easy, there probably will not be any more very big and successful lets plays of the original game.
The most important point in this vid: unless you have a very unique niche or gimmick in Minecraft, try another game for a first let's play. We've all seen the tree-punchin' first episodes thousands of times.
@BdoubleO100 Hey, can you look at mine? Nah, I'm jk :p I never once peddled my own videos at anyone lol. This is all great advice, I think my audio problems in my first 3 videos shot my LP right in the foot D: . Thanks for all the great advice man! We, your loyal viewers and aspiring LP'ers really appreciate you taking the time to help us out!

If you did a series of directors commentary on your old videos I'd watch them all. It's interesting watching your critique your old footage.

Thanks again BOO :-)

Some great advice BOO, respect for using one of your own videos & pointing out some flaws. Stuff I learnt quickly making my LP this last year 1) Have a plan for your episode no matter how big or small your goals are. 2) Always sound upbeat & positive, avoid "um's" and "ah's". 3) Be active on other channels the same way you expect others to be active on yours. Like, support, comment. 4) Don't spam other YouTuber's but get yourself out there. A nod or mention from a big channel helps wonders :-)
Biffa2001 1 month ago
WOW even 40 minutes of staring at a blank picture with you talking was better than that.

Just to be totally honest, based on your first episode, I wouldn't have predicted that you would have become as big as you are now on youtube. But it's nice to see that it all works out in the end!

ProTip: If you're trying to use a Mac to make a Let's Play, you should probably consider switching.
CampbellCrafts 1 month ago
@CampbellCrafts Not necessarily. If you have a good Mac like an i7 or Xeon Mac and you can run almost any game on the market then making Minecraft videos is easy! QuickTime for Mac comes with free Recording software and its great quality for the file size. If you have shitty PC that you have to play on low render settings upgrading is needed.

Seems like most of the ppl that get big get some sort of shout-out!
DJparsons89 1 month ago
@DJparsons89 You have to have a great channel going first to get the shoutouts. In frustation, it's easy to overlook what you could improve, but all you have to do is do research and stick to it, try to improve, try to make it more like you want it to be. Speaking off my own view only, I'll say that minecraft LP'ing is a taken market. You have to come up with something really special to catch my attention. OOGE is the whole package for me. Sorry.
Muskar2 1 month ago
@Muskar2 Well ya of course you need to have a good channel to get a shout out! but i'm just saying right now some ppl are big because they got shout outs. Not because of what they do! Like Etho for example i heard of him because he built sick traps.
DJparsons89 1 month ago
@DJparsons89 Shout outs fall under the category "promotion", and that can be achieved in many other ways than shout-outs. If you really want people to see what you did, you should just spend every waking hour on getting them to see what you did. Obviously that's very over-ambitious, but you get the point. Anyway, I agree with MrAntice and Avidya on this as well. Even though it may sound hard to accomplish, it's what there is to it, and it'll get easier eventually.
Muskar2 1 month ago
Also, it's nice to finally get an answer to some of the questions we all have. I have asked questions to other people before and it's like I'm the candle in the wind sometimes, getting ignored is never fun, especially when you are frustrated that something isn't working correctly, Thanks again for taking the time, this is why BdoubleO remains my favorite LPer he takes the time to help others and actually responds to comments.

elfenari123 1 month ago
@BdoubleO100 I know you said that you use Fraps software and that you have a few extra edits and steps involved to make your videos. Try using Bandicams software, it's only 39$ and it doesn't record a black screen or reversed colors (Fraps did that to mine), or ay of the other bullcrap extra steps you need to do to make it better. I guarantee that you'll like Bandisoft's program better. :D
azaraiahzee 1 month ago
@gamezgamer perhaps skip the first 2 nights. It is always the same. Still record them, but don't commentate them and use them for a voice over extra that you can use when you have more people.
pyrophiloffthapill 1 month ago
This is pretty informative. Looking in to starting a MC Let's Play, and these tips are important. Whole black screen and menu searching is a big no no from what I see in LPs, as well as not talking to fill in the low points. But always interacting and keeping focus on a goal often makes a great video, in my opinion.

I switched from Sony Vegas to Premiere Pro because of the Black Screens. I'm almost using the same export settings from Sony Vegas so the render times are about the same. But with Premiere Pro i don't have to re-render my project again because of a black screen.
DJparsons89 1 month ago
@DJparsons89 All you have to do to fix the black screen is restart Vegas. Also you will know when you are going to get a black screen because the Fraps Codec will crash. As a habit I have just learned to save and restart vegas before I render and no longer have any issues :)

bartekbaree 1 month ago
@bartekbaree That statement makes no sense. People were saying this when I started in Oct 2010. Bdub started only a few months ago. If he would have listened to this advice we wouldn't have his great series to watch.
A more accurate statement is we don't need anymore copycat LPs. Do your own thing and do it well.
AvidyaZen 1 month ago 3
@bartekbaree I'd watch more minecraft LP'ers out there if there were more LP's that had a nice flow/quality to them. Bdubs is right in a lot of his self critique. the vid's has to have at least some polish on it. it does not have to be totaly unique. but it needs to flow naturally. stopping to check recipies and settings is a big nono. if a section is booring. fast forward it. and for goodness sake. don't make an entire 15 minute+ episode of nothing. always have a goal in mind for the episode.
MrAntice 1 month ago 15
@MrAntice I agree with you on that. I honestly think there is just too let's players many that.. don't have that thing to make a good minecraft lp. Now that we've seen about everything about minecraft and the game I have to say is getting easy, there probably will not be any more very big and successful lets plays of the original game.
