the really is no mood or manner of play which escaped mozart. there are so many musicians who have one style. when you hear it, you know who it is. for mozart, when you hear perfection, that's when you know it is the master.
well she was Stalin's favorite pianist. Its been said this recording was on Stalins record player the night he died
she was an extrodinary brave woman, many of the things she did could have gotten her killed but she was one of the few, or was she the only one who angered Stalin and got away with it.
@truecrypt you can find parallels to Hitler when thinking about Stalin and this recording of Yudina. Hitler admired the conductor Furtwaengler. The only thing different, Furtwaengler did not have the courage of a Yudina!!!!
Maria Yudina had very religious moments and this comes out very clearly in this interpretation. Its funny but what Stalin did like finally did make a lot of problems. Maria Yudina got a lot of troubles because of her religious opinions. The exagerated slow tempo here may come from that aspect....
Dear Maria! Mashenka Yudina... Thank you very much for this wonderful deep feelings. You help us to understand Mozart's genial music. Inimitably humane!
Yudina begins in one, very slow, tempo, but the conductor fails to hold on to it. It kind of feels like the conductor doesn't dare continue Yudina's tempo. Pity.
I think its the slowliest tempo the orchestra could do... if they would have done like Mrs Yudina at the beginning the music would have broken in pieces. They do it still very very slow. Anyway Mrs Yudina does not slow down when playing together , she could have done. I think it was a choice done at rehearsal already.... the idea she wanted a more slow start is another possible explanation.....
The orchestra doesn't seem that good, lacking confidence or is just missing a vital part of music. Personally, I do not like the speed of Yudina's interpretation, but I can see how some people would, especially with the tone.
Yudina was Stalin's favorite pianist. One night, Stalin heard a performance of K488 on the radio performed by Yudina and asked for a copy. It was a live broadcast, so officials woke up Yudina, drove her to a recording studio where a small orchestra had quickly been assembled, and made her record it in the middle of the night. A single copy was pressed from the matrix and then presented to Stalin - this. Stalin apparently broke out in tears after hearing the first notes of Yudina's playing (wiki)
Gorgeous playing, suffused with suffering, at exactly the right tempo: ADAGIO, as marked, and over seven minutes in length. Too many pianists play it as a glib Andante, some even at five minutes duration!
Yudina - wonder of nature. How on earth is it possible to play like this?
And if you only knew the history behind this recording - it makes it even more fascinating. Damn Stalin, but thanks to him we have the recording today.
One night, Stalin heard a performance of Mozart's Piano Concerto No. 23 on the radio performed by Yudina and asked for a copy. It was a live broadcast so officials woke up Yudina, drove her to a recording studio where a small orchestra had quickly been assembled, and made her record the concerto in the middle of the night, a single copy was pressed from the matrix and then presented to Stalin
Such incompetence... it,s like blasphemy to the composer
Mozart would be tossing in his grave if he heard the mess lol

This particular movement is composed in F# Minor and during a sad time in the life of the young composer.
