Chevy didn't go crying to NASCAR to force Ford to sell them engines so they could reverse engineer them like Ford did... The result of which was the 429. Chevy was never stupid enough to put the oil sump of a performance engine in the front like Ford was for decades. Now Ford did make some really cool cars, but Chevy ALWAYS made better engines.

I'm a Chevy guy here to call you out. Ford made damn fine motors back in the day with the 351, 352, 390, 406, and especially their 427. THEN they screwed up and ditched everything but the crappy 281 that you see on the road today which still can't keep up with Chevy's LS1 competition that's 12 years old
im a ford guy and love mustangs,but for a mustang to race a chevelle (and from looks,the chevelle is modified) i just dont see a 5.0 stang winning even if its modified.and depending if the stang is carborated or EFI,the EFI 5.0 didn't make much power even with some bolt on's.
@AkLG5 It's nice to see a Ford guy with a brain. Ford DID make some good engines, but I'll never be able to get over the fact that they put the oil sump in the front. That was an INCREDIBLY stupid design flaw considering all of the oil goes to the back when you drop the hammer. The little 5/16 drive rod they used for the oil pump was always a weak link as well. You can still make a Ford run REALLY well, but it takes more work to do it than a Chevy does.
well,ive only seen 1 fast mustang.its a real nice foxbody,badass.its also my uncles and nobody within 2 countys in all directions will race him heads up.but other than it,all the the fords ive raced...blew.they cost too much to build and they have bad head designs on top of half the head bolts as a chevy.its a pain in the ass to run anything over 10:1.unless u have an o-ring grove machined in ur heads.fords just cant keep up with a chevy.

GM was 4 lines, Ford 1, and dont forget the GS Buicks rocked with the 455's, most overlooked car in 70

Ford had problems designing heads. Look at camshafts for ford and chevy. The ford cam has more lift for a comparable chevy cam. Chevy makes more power with a smaller cam.Clevelands had 2 heads and neither one fit the pupose. Big blocks going into mustangs had to have different heads to fit between the shock towers.Rod to stroke ratio is wack on the fords too. Rods are short and creates alot if side thrust on cylinder walls. I'm not triing to hate but c'mon.
@tamapalagi That's my point exactly. Chevy engine designs have always been FAR superior to the comparable Ford designs. Build a few engines people, and you'll see what we mean. I've built Chevy's, Fords, Mopars, etc. Only Ford is dumb enough to put the crappy heads on the good bottom end (351W) and the good heads on the weaker bottom end (351C.) The 351W has bigger journals and longer rods than the 351C, and the early 351W blocks were MUCH beefier. How stupid is that?

look, im not douting that chevy V8s are underpowered or dont perform because they do. You can get alot of power out of them. But the FACT!!!!! is the reason 70%+ of kit cars and hot rods use chevys is cos their cheaper. The reason their cheaper is because Chevy use a cheaper alloy to make the block, this cheaper alloy is softer than the ford V8 and therefore is more prone to breaking.
well factory ford blocks can only handle 550 when factory chevy blocks can handle 650-700.if you knew anything about blocks you should know that chevy has a far better alloy than ford.chevys have nickle and lead in their alloys to make the block distribute loads better and make them less likly to crack.they are cheaper and make more power than a ford.plus a for only has half the head bolts as a chevy.that means i could run 12-13:1 and not blow head gaskests like you would at 10.5:1.

Ford's can run much higher compression than those numbers, and so can a Chevy. Take for example, Nelson's F.A.S.T. (Factory Appearing Stock Tire) BB Chevrolet Vette. 511ci, 'Factory' block & heads, 14.3:1 compression and runs 10.5's on bias-ply tires. 14.3:1. Nuff said
and to add on to that, I've raced my '71 Malibu 383 against 5.0l SN95's and Fox bodies, and I've won and lost. Mostly won, but a friend of mine runs a procharger setup on his fox body and he beats me by a couple lengths usually. In the 1/4. Also, I run w/o nitrous or any BS, and I hook good but those fox bodies always beat me off the line :-D

Lol, you're funny. Think about it. Chevy has the new Corvette ZR-1 coming out this summer for 2009. Ford won't touch it! That's a true American car that can be used to smoke any car on the road and be used as a daily driver. I would like to see Ford try and compete because they won't. Nice try though. Ford had problems designing heads. Look at camshafts for ford and chevy. The ford cam has more lift for a comparable chevy cam. Chevy makes more power with a smaller cam.Clevelands had 2 heads and neither one fit the pupose. Big blocks going into mustangs had to have different heads to fit between the shock towers.Rod to stroke ratio is wack on the fords too. Rods are short and creates alot if side thrust on cylinder walls. I'm not triing to hate but c'mon.

@tamapalagi That's my point exactly. Chevy engine designs have always been FAR superior to the comparable Ford designs. Build a few engines people, and you'll see what we mean. I've built Chevy's, Fords, Mopars, etc. Only Ford is dumb enough to put the crappy heads on the good bottom end (351W) and the good heads on the weaker bottom end (351C.) The 351W has bigger journals and longer rods than the 351C, and the early 351W blocks were MUCH beefier. How stupid is that?

...Chevelle=Lengendary (its big block better beat a 302 w/ 2** hp) Mustang=Nothing has ever sold like it, ever! I love both of these cars but my only argument is that ford keeps up w/ a smaller motor every time even today! 5.0-5.7, 4.6-5.3, 5.4-7.0! This vid is why I think I'll get into hotrodding, Ford and Chevy come together in great harmony and evry1s happy!

I believe the 35+ year old chevy just beat up on that newer stang...nuff said. "its only just recently that Chevy could design a competetive/ powerful V8 thats also Reliable. Is this a joke? hellloo genius.. the small block chevy was introduced in 1955 and has been the #1 choice for hotrodders and muscle cars folks alike.. haven't you ever been to a car show? how many rods do you see with a small block ford? not too many. know why? expensive to build and don't make a ton of power..

yer, its no.1 for 1 reason.... its cheaper. its made from a softer alloy and although it is still hugley competetive and very powerfull, it cant hold a candle to the equivelant Ford V8 purly because it wont blow up. im also speaking from expereince have worked with chevy V8s in the past, their dog shit.

look, im not douting that chevy V8s are underpowered or dont perform because they do. You can get alot of power out of them. But the FACT!!!!! is the reason 70%+ of kit cars and hot rods use chevys is cos their cheaper. The reason their cheaper is because Chevy use a cheaper alloy to make the block, this cheaper alloy is softer than the ford V8 and therefore is more prone to breaking.

well factory ford blocks can only handle 550 when factory chevy blocks can handle 650-700.if you knew anything about blocks you should know that chevy has a far better alloy than ford.chevys have nickle and lead in their alloys to make the block distribute loads better and make them less likly to crack.they are cheaper and make more power than a ford.plus a for only has half the head bolts as a chevy.that means i could run 12-13:1 and not blow head gaskests like you would at 10.5:1.

WTF. thats a load of crap. i may not be an expert on engines. but i have enough experience with blown engines to know that a top chevy V8 will blow long before a performance Ford V8. Im not douting their V8s can push alot of horse power, thats why their also popular with Drag Racing.

But its only in the last 2 years That Chevy came up with their own designed V8 that had the Endurance for NASCAR. before then all the V8s were based on the high performance FORD V8So dont go trying to tell me that their not only cheaper, but more reliable than Fords.

@puddin1001 Hmmm.. Wasn't it FORD who went drying to NASCAR back in the day? NASCAR forced Chevy to sell their 427 to Ford so Ford could reverse engineer it because Ford was getting their ass kicked. Ford promptly ruined the design be moving the oil pump to the front, reducing the number of head bolts, and doing all of the other retarded design changes Ford was famous for back in the day. At least Chevy can actually design their own engine without having to rip off another manufacturer!

OK wow, there are ALOT of dumb people on this site. Don't get me wrong, I'm a diehard Chevy fan, but that IS a load of bullsh*t. Ford's can run much higher compression than those numbers, and so can a Chevy. Take for example, Nelson's F.A.S.T. (Factory Appearing Stock Tire) BB Chevrolet Vette. 511ci, 'Factory' block & heads, 14.3:1 compression and runs 10.5's on bias-ply tires. 14.3:1. Nuff said

and to add on to that, I've raced my '71 Malibu 383 against 5.0l SN95's and Fox bodies, and I've won and lost. Mostly won, but a friend of mine runs a procharger setup on his fox body and he beats me by a couple lengths usually. In the 1/4. Also, I run w/o nitrous or any BS, and I hook good but those fox bodies always beat me off the line :-D

@puddin1001 Ever try revving ANY Ford big block as high as say a Chevy 427 can rev AND live? I've built both Chevys and Fords as well, and if you're going to call one junk, it would have to be the Ford. I've already mentioned some of Ford's idiotic design flaws, so I won't mention them again. If you really HAVE built both, you would know that a Chevy can take MUCH more abuse than a Ford can. It's really THAT simple.

the new chevy 08 vette will smoke anything on the street in its price range no other car dealer can compete with chevy. Ford swung and missed big on the new mustang 500 it was just the normal mustang will a little extra go. ford might have had some ok cars in the past but past is the past and present is now and now ford is a discrace.

All their V8s are made out of a softer alloy, thats what makes them so cheap and readily available. Sure you can get alot of power out of them, but their still gona break long before a Ford V8.

@puddin1001 You are a prime example as to why GM and Mopar guys ALL hate Ford guys. FACT: Chevy's 010/020 alloy is second to none. Fact: Chevy didn't need to make THREE different 350s to do the job because they got the design right the FIRST time. BTW, the reason Chevys are cheaper to build is because you don't have to replace EVERYTHING too get them to make power AND live. You CLEARLY have never built anything other than a Ford. If you had, you would know Fords are junk.
