@Dettyletty Well i hate to tell you, but tornadoes do happen here in Australia. They can happen anywhere. Its just that America has the conditions to produce the long track, damaging storms that you see so often.
These are the times you wish you had an old beat up car and a water resistant handy cam... love storm chasing and luckily enough were in the middle of it on the Gold Coast and SEQ...
FUCK another 5-6 months to go before we get anything like this again, storm season is too short!
This year was my 1st year here in Aussie (Sunshine Coast), now I'm obsessed with severe weather, will have my own car by next spring and ill be out chasing as much as possible.
not officially.. although a few people reported a funnel shaped cloud..
Based on radar signatures tho'.. this storm that affected the gold coast hinterland area was much more likely to have produced a tornado than the storm that affected The Gap area in Brisbane..
My other half and her friends were upon tambornine down near the waterfall, they just got real wet with not much wind. My parents friends up that way have been Qld'ers all theier life and they have seen NOTHING like what they saw that day
A supercell storm is simply a thunderstorm with a persistently rotating central updraft.. The thing that separates a supercell from a non-supercell storm is the rotation.. because this leads to a much higher risk of tornadoes or at least significant wind damage when the whole storm is rotating.
That is one NASTY looking cloud ... holysmokes. Is this the one that hit near Brisbane? Been watching vids of it, wondered if you got on any of the action. Love watching your stormchase vids: and I thought the US Southern Plains had storms. YIPE. Five amazing stars!
I have to agree with some people on here.. there is NO such thing as a mini tornado.. it's either a tornado or it isn't.
Tornadoes can be big dangerous tornadoes in the EF0-EF2 range or they can be large damaging tornado from the EF3-EF5 range.. but there is no such thing as a "mini tornado".. It's just a stupid term that the Australian media uses because they're too dumb to even realise that Australia averages over 5 PROPER tornadoes a year... and they are just the ones that people see!
One of our members of our Astronomy Club works for the Dept of Meteorology and at a meeting he said that when you hear the warning "Thunderstorms with severe squalls" is basically a Tornado alert. I hope I have that right but the main thing is here in W.A. there would be panic if they issue a Tornado alert. It is amazing how often after this alert that a Tornado has been blamed for damage.
no there arent any such thing as a mini tornado!!!!!!, but i knew that that one did, when i saw the damage in brisbane, because simple gusts of wind can't do that.
Of course there is a mini-tornado, lol. It may not be a real thing, but it has become part of the Australian dialect and it is here to stay. I believe the term is also being included in the next Oxford Dictionary, describing an extra powerful storm cell. Mini Tornados ROCK!
Stuff that, I'd be speeding away from that :P
