He was terrified in the book and movie and had no intention whatsoever of going agianst Dumbledore.

He didn't want to kill Dumbledore!

You could tell it all in his face that he wanted Dumbledore to be alive, he had mounts of respect for him even though he was told to follow in the Death Eater's footsteps. He was forced to kill Dumbledore by an ordeal from Voldemort and Bellatrix and if he refused then he would die.
