Just one thing: some singers do need microphones (or at the very least should use them) in certain "opera houses" as the venues were not built with the acoustics in mind. Therefore, if you're not sitting in the "right spot" the sound disperses and quickly gets lost (been there, very frustrating).
Just to be clear about the role of those microphones in front of her... they're recording, not amplifying. You don't need microphones in opera houses: they're constructed with the explicit purpose of carrying sound across a large chamber.
I am a huge Angela Gheorgiu fan, but she is not the best on this. If you are a soprano and your bottom register is not rich & projected "consistently" on up into middle and top, please do not sing this aria!...However, her interpretative skills on this is quite excellent!....
her rendition of the habanera is fantastic, as well as bascially all her other work. she's a master master master of opera! plus, she's amazingly beautiful! :D
Angela Gheorghiu is a rare blessing from God to the people on earth. She not only sings exquisitely well, but is outstandingly beautiful. May God continue to bless her.
She sings well because she sang opera music from a very young age. She studied singing at the National University of Music in Bucharest and and graduated in 1990. Don't credit a non-specific deity for her accomplishments!
Type in bumac and click on the first one. It is unbelievable. He has the 2nd highest male voice. The highest one can sing can sing a C# above the piano.
@Delmasca The point is that she is not only a magnificent sopranos but she's also a beautyful woman. I know that Carmen is a gipsy because I read Guy De Maupassant's novel "Carmen" and also I just bought "La Traviata" blue-ray disc recorded at Scala di Milano and I was absolutely overwhelm by her beauty, acting and of course by her wonderful voice. This people in Valencia don't do a justice to her. I do like her very much and one day you might aprove my point! Thank you for challenging me.
Angela is a great singer. One of my favorites. But, I don't really get to understand why she sang Carmen. I mean, she did it great, as she always does, but I don't understand that desire of protagonism some singers have.
As far as I am concerned, this is the type of Carmen I like... Dark and mysterious. After all, if you see the lyrics she's singing you'll know that there are no reason to be smiling about. :) Just my opinion, anyway...
If you mean that Angela is smiling too much for this aria, she is not smiling all the time, and I perceived her smile as an ironic and patronizing one, a real seductive smile. But that's my opinion, too, you don't have to agree with me. And Angela is here a bit dark and mysterious, as well. I can't wait to see the broadcast next year when she will be performing Carmen on stage for the first time!
No, no, I actually tried to say what you did. :) I was responding to a comment where someone suggested that Angela should smile more. And I said that she doesn't have to, and that I like best her Carmen, anyway.
And I 've just seen you are Romanian, Angela's co-national. You must be very proud that your people has such wonderful singers: Virginia Zeani, Angela Gheorghiu, Elena Cernei. And the first Tosca happened to be Romanian! (However, I don't remember her name now.)
Yes, I am, indeed. I was actually born in a town very close to Angela's, as well.
I take very much pride in having such talented people born in my country; but, on the other hand, you can see they only achieve success while abroad, as this country does nothing for them.
Hariclea Haricli (or Darclée as she is also known) is the name you were looking for. It's no biggie you don't remember her name, as probably half the country doesn't remember, either.
Didn't she and Alagna sing the Final Duet in this concert? I remember reading that they sang some parts of Carmen. Seeing them in the exciting Final Duet would be thrilling!

Of course they don't need to sing into a microphone. Opera existed hundreds of years ago, before electricity was discovered.

Lamour! Lamour! Lamour! Lamour!

Technically fine, and yet it lacks the passion of Carmen. Too sterile and too decent. Check Maria Ewing's Carmen for comparison.

AG is far too cold, and as has been said, runs the gamet of emotions from A to B ..... for Carmen.
sdorr 4 years ago
.....still cold....is it so hard to smile,
or leer a little, as Carmen, for heaven's
sake??? ...esp for a singer who's supposed to have some acting ability??? I can't understand why so cold...esp give what Senor Domingo did.....
