I was there for at least one night of this weekend Emmylou & Gram, BTDT. Liberty Hall was da kine! i think Mississippi Fred McDowell & Bonnie Raitt opened the joint :)
My gosh, I never thought I would EVER get the see video of these two performers together! I am so thankful to have found this. Thank you, derikgranz2 for posting this priceless video.
First saw Emmylou in later 70's,and I have too agree with other comments-I never saw Emmylou move this much. Hmm! And I honestly I mean no disrespect,I love Emmy but she looks heavier that anytime I seen her?,course it may just be the poor quality of the video, Thanks for posting its great to see Emmy feeling no pain, and the one and only Gram. RIP
The ONLY live video of Gram that exists is the four songs on "Together Again", (see my comment below).
The exception is the movie Gimme Shelter, (Rolling Stones), which has a very short, from behind, shot of The Burritos playing "Six Days on the Road" and the movie The Trip which has video of Gram with International Submarine Band, dubbed over by a more famous psychadelic band.
I agree that there have to be more numbers from this particular show available. The picture and sound on this are pretty good, and I would love to see more. Does anyone know if there are any more songs out there from this show?
@acadx Someone needs to get in contact with the person who posted this and the Streets of Baltimore video that is apparently from the same show. We have to get as much of this show as possible! It's awesome stuff, despite the quality of the audio.
hey i got a lot of gram stuff i am going to do some research and if more of this show exist ill find it you will be the first i let know be cool and take care thanks for being a fan of gram nice to meet you take care
I used to seen them at The Palomino back in the day and it was some of the absolute best memories I have. To be in the element, the packed house, the L.A. summers, the beer, the women, so much fun.
neat...kinda cool to be born and rasied in the same town as Gram. There's a lot of good music coming out of here again. Check out Abby Owens on youtube
In my opinion, Gram Parsons is one of the best ever singers to capture a pure emotive feeling, due mainly to his perfectly cracked vocal delivery. He found a soul mate in Emmylou. What could have been, we can only speculate, but we're left with an outstanding set of songs which, as Gram described, was his Cosmic American Music.
@JaseOxer1971 If you listen to Gram's earlier recordings you will hear that his voice is not cracked at all but clean, lithe, and tuneful. I have to believe that this was a conscience choice by him to better communicate raw emotion.
@RossM3838 It's equally possible that he's on little sleep, or has been drinking, or that smoking has started taking it's toll.. If you listen to Townes Van Zandt's music chronologically you'll hear his voice slowly deteriorating and deepening.. Life on the road, nightly shows, drugs, cigarettes, booze and lack of sleep all can take a toll on a voice. You might be hearing damage due to lifestyle more than any deliberate alteration, though i guess it's impossible to really know.
Hi. This is the only live footage of them together I have ever seen, So rare, raw and beautiful. thanks so much for sharing. The honesty and sadness in Gram's voice would at times bring me to tears, I could feel the pain in his words, that is how honest his voice was and them together was magical.
Huge Gram Parson's fan and have followed Emmlou's career, she can sing with anyone but Gram was her perfect partner. This means the word to me. Thank you so much!
As a person who owns every Gram parsons recording known as well as Emmylou (even Gliding Bird) This is a good indication of the thought I had all along. These two would have made a great couple.
It seems to me Emmylou Harris was very happy being around Gram Parsons and kind of lost that sppontaneousness once he was gone. I think he was the man of her life. I myself did not care about country music untill I watched "Gram Parson's Theft", they were pioneers, good stuff.
Yeah, this was early 2000's. I heard "old timers" (sorry) talking about all those places you mention though. The Agora is now The Newport. Supposedly the longest continuously operating rock venue
in the US. A friend said he saw the Dead there in '71 as a benefit for the High St. Free Medical Clinic!
Hi mate, sorry for the delay. I can't recall, some of those shows were a bit hazy!
Lucid enough to totally enjoy the moment though! It was south of the campus- THE
Ohio State University. Man, what a music town. Between Newport, Promowest, The Schott, Nationwide and the clubs, I saw some of the best shows of my life. Some that stand out: Taj Mahal
and the Radiators at Newort;Little Feat, Lucinda Williams, Ratdog, and Govt. Mule
at Promowest; and Dylan, once with Phil and Friends. Go Bucks!
I know what you mean about the haziness! I remember Bob Seeger playing at the Sugar Shack. Do you remember the Sugar Shack? The Agora? Mr. Brown's Descent? Funny, the places you mentioned, I do not recall, but I am talking 70s. Perhaps this was a little later?
That's gotta be Sneaky Pete Kleinow on pedal steel. I was fortunate to have seen him before he passed with Garth Hudson of The Band in a little bar in Columbus, Ohio. Magical night. Thanks for posting this gem!
I've never really listened to Emmylou before but she has been highly visable in the music scene for many years.I do know she seems to play music for the enjoyment of it and has given opportunities to many talented musicians, songwriters, artists and producers as Gram gave her a shot in the business and she remebers Gram in every project she does and I think that is super cool.
Emyylou still talks about him in interviews. He really changed her life. The speculation of a romantic involvement is still speculation. The only person who can answer that is Emmylou. But he was charming, charismatic and fun and brought out the best in those around him including Emmylou.
Emmylou said in an interview that a few weeks before Gram died she realized she was in love with him but didn't want to tell him on the phone. She was going to see him in a couple of weeks and was savoring the thought of telling him in person. She has never gotten over his death.
@barlowesgrill Emmylou Harris is adamant that she and Gram never ever had that type of relationship. She says that although she and Gram "shared a powerful bond of love", they never had a relationship. Gram was too in love with music to be in love with another person for the long term. It is true, however, that she was shattered when Gram passed away.
I had a feeling that just maybe there was the possibility that Emmylou Harris may have been in love with Gram Parsons, although she had publicly stated on numerous occasions that their relationship was professional and strictly platonic.
This is one of my first times to see footage of Gram. Taken way too soon. Had he lived its no telling the influence he'd have, if ts even possible to have more influnece then he does already. He truly is he Father of country-rock.
Gram Parsons and the Fallen Angels played eight total shows during their four date stint at Liberty Hall. The Sunday night show Neil Young joined them on stage to jam. Linda Ronstadt sang Sin City with Gram and Emmylou during the same show.
At this time Miss Harris was divorced, and a single mother. Gram, however, was married, and Emmy is a proper lady. All reports indicate a deep affection by both people but no overt romance.
Gram, the best ever. This is great rare footage. Thanks kindly for posting it & to all of Grams fans for keeping it going.Gram should NEVER be forgotten.
Cool! Thanks so much for sharing this. Liberty Hall, which has (unfortunately) been gone for years now, was a music venue on Chenevert Street in Houston, Texas. Damn, I wish I'd been at this show. I did see Willis Alan Ramsey there once. Anyway, great video!
ummm...they were deeply in love...if Gram had lived...well I think they would still be together...but good question...and as harvey says..it's the song she wrote about Gram's death after spending month's at Linda Ronstadts house getting over it...
Young Emmy Loo made a big impression sitting in front of that Mojave hotel in big black boots and radiant hairdo, Parsons brought the devil out of her.
Oh man you and me both! She was the authentic woman. No pretentiouns no matter what. She is what it is all about. Deep love of music and deep love of the folks we play with.
Right on, gagnegreen! Just think, if Gram's lit cigarette had hit you in the eye and blinded you, you'd have such an awesome story to tell for the rest of your life... 'Hey, guess how I lost this eye, man...' Wow, imagine how jealous people would be!
shockdoc that is a dumb comment i would do the same thing if i was a rock star..thats all it is being a rock star..people at warped tour these days spit on the crowd..and honestly if that lit cigarette hit me in the face and burned me i would pick it up and save it as a collectible and be happy about it. its rude to talk about people behind their back much less if they are dead..gram was a rock star and lived the rock star life
You got to admit that if Gram did really flick a cigarette at the audience, it is really insulting and disregards what the worst outcome could be. A red hot cherry at an eyeball........but, however, yet, on the other hand, who fucken cares? Great song, must of been a great show and long live Gram Parsons!!! (consider yourself blessed to have been there)
This is the gig (not sure if it's this show-I dont know how many he did)where he was announced, came out and flipped a lit cigarette into the audience. What an asshole, contributions to country rock aside..Emmy is hilarious w/ the over-the-top tamborine work
I was a college freshman at Northern AZ Univ in Flagstaff the day the news flash actually came of the RADIO in my room to interrupt No Reason to Quit by Merle THAT,"rock and roll singer GParsons was found dead at Joshua Tree Motel." etc. It wasn't that far away from there. I was ridiculed by post hippie schmucks for playing his record on my radio show on KNAU. that was life in 1973 for ya
Liberty Hall was my old stompin grounds and I was at this show. Gram Parson was great, but Emmylou Harris rocked my little world. I heard from the employees there that Gram was totally wasted. I was pretty trashed myself and didn't remember a whole lot, so thanks for showing me what i missed.
That was back when Roberto was running the hall. This little venue on Chenevert in Houston was fantastic. My favorite show there was Jerry Garcia and Merle Saunders. I was at this show also...see back than....lol
Gram & Emmylou together, wow, two of my heroes, first time I have seen them together. thank you for posting this, gave me much joy to watch few tears as well
This was recorded at Houston's Liberty Hall on February 23, 1973. What's even better is that during the performance, Neil Young and Linda Ronstadt, who were playing other gigs in town, joined with them. Wouldn't you like to have film of that! I believe it exists somewhere.
If this clip exists then there must be more. Filmed using multiple cameras. Makes me wonder what else is out there. In any case, how wonderful to see the real thing. One of his greatest songs too!
Yes, it makes one wonder what else is out there--at least from this show, if not others. It's the only clip of them performing together that I'm aware of .
The video was available in the late 90's from Sierra Briar records who owns the rights to the video. It was on a vhs tape along with a 1/2 hour installment of the old Bob Baxter Guitar Workshop tv show that featured Clarence White. There's been a lot of talk about a release of the Liberty Hall show, but it hasn't appeared yet.
I'd love to see more of this session. Can you tell me how many tunes were on the tape? I don't find any more currently on YouTube. Sure wish someone would post the rest...!
This is a fantastic rare vid clip. This is during Gram's later part of his musical career, after the Flying Burrito Brothers. He toured with Emmy Lou Harris, singing songs from his final two albums - GP and Grievous Angel.

shockdoc that is a dumb comment i would do the same thing if i was a rock star..thats all it is being a rock star..people at warped tour these days spit on the crowd..and honestly if that lit cigarette hit me in the face and burned me i would pick it up and save it as a collectible and be happy about it. its rude to talk about people behind their back much less if they are dead..gram was a rock star and lived the rock star life
gagnegreen 4 years ago

What's your source for this claim?

I was a college freshman at Northern AZ Univ in Flagstaff the day the news flash actually came of the RADIO in my room to interrupt No Reason to Quit by Merle THAT,"rock and roll singer GParsons was found dead at Joshua Tree Motel." etc. It wasn't that far away from there. I was ridiculed by post hippie schmucks for playing his record on my radio show on KNAU. that was life in 1973 for ya
hoctor 4 years ago
I'm curious why 'the post hippie' crowd ridiculed you for playing his record on your show? Was it a rock format, or just whatever you wanted to play?

1973 was when I was born, and Gram Parsons never was embraced in Nashville nor accepted with open arms into the country music community at large.!

One of his greatest songs too!
seans10 4 years ago
Yes, it makes one wonder what else is out there--at least from this show, if not others. It's the only clip of them performing together that I'm aware of .

The video was available in the late 90's from Sierra Briar records who owns the rights to the video. It was on a vhs tape along with a 1/2 hour installment of the old Bob Baxter Guitar Workshop tv show that featured Clarence White. There's been a lot of talk about a release of the Liberty Hall show, but it hasn't appeared yet.

Outstanding!! This clip is historical.
Gram Parsons clips are extremely rare. Gram understood the value of a pedal steel and the appeal of traditional country music.

Gram was such a natural,a smoothie.A great talent wasted at such young age...his passing was a big loss to the music world.

This is a fantastic rare vid clip. This is during Gram's later part of his musical career, after the Flying Burrito Brothers. He toured with Emmy Lou Harris, singing songs from his final two albums - GP and Grievous Angel.
