  • Greg is awesome but I am listening to the board player and this is solo is not across Giant Steps ... it s a short progression attached to the tune giving Greg much latitude

  • That Peavey HP Special is awesome!!!

  • Is that an attenuator on top of his amp?

  • @MrDarinWarren he broadcasts his shows all across the universe

  • Greg Howe is the supreme god!!!

It is an example of life for me.

thanks greg's, to make my life prettier. =]

  • The fact that it seems some people didn't hear giant steps in this (most of part 1 is soloing over those changes with a hendrixy 7sharp9 vamp as an occasional interlude) is maybe a testimony to the fact that greg howe uses a wide range of expressive rock guitar techniques and a surprisingly melodic approach over a tough progression without breaking a sweat. Distorted rock guitar is such an involved instrument to control and loads of 'legit' jazz-sounding people struggle to hear gs this well.

  • @screamingken wait....i'm not dissing greg howe, but this literally is not the john coltrane composition giant steps. those chord changes are not occurring here.

  • this is great...but i dont see why the guitars, horns and keys complains so much when a drummer solo's....every musician solo's....yeah there has to be a pocket but the pocket is tru for all instruments not jyuss the drums...if all musicians could keep there own timing like a drummer then evryone can jam like this....

  • A lot of people have some nice licks but for crying out loud, How just keeps goin on and on and on. Chops comming out his ars. One of my favorites.

  • This is cool but its not Giant Steps

  • I listen to Mike Stern, Frank Gambale, John Scofield, Al Dimiola, George Benson, Santana etc. etc. and for me he plays the most perfect and excellent solos. They are musical, great chops, tones, and feel ! Greg Howe ! Damn !

  • I question ANY person and for that matter ANY MUSICIAN who does not recognize Greg's talent....he is simply the greatest.

  • How is that Giant Steps?

  • I'm really getting sick of the jazz purists bashing Greg so much. especially when they talk about his shredding. Greg has so much more under his belt than the typical jazz player. he can be funky, he can rock, he can be smooth, he can do anything. His phrasing is beyond any jazz player IMO and his timing is good as any other guy. Much more complex and filled with character. he never plays the same thing twice in any of his solos. He sounds original unlike all of those john Scofielfd wannabes.

  • @SirJamestheIII Amen to that. Greg is a spectacular player, I really don't see how anyone could have negative criticism towards him. You can learn a lot from a player like this.

  • Very goooddddd!!!

  • harmonically boring

  • @estoufflet

If you are paying attention to the harmony, you are paying attention to the wrong thing. The point of the video is to highlight the guitarist's skill, not the ability of the band to play a complex harmony.

Plus, I think the mix is a little off making it harder to hear some of the bassier sounds.

  • would have liked to hear them play the changes in part 2

  • giant steps my ass.

  • I just noticed wah-wah FX

  • i thought this was a trane cover from the title or is it???????

  • the great "Giant Steps"...

  • @forestdavisjr yeah its a cover

  • 3:22

  • Awesome playing, Hans (fan since 1st Greg Howe Album more then 20 years ago)

  • damn he looks like jeff beck from afar

  • sound guy sucks, greg shouldve been a lil louder IMO. but he kicks ass either which way.

  • Fucking Wow!

  • Exactly. What a player!!

  • Man this is AWESOME! I haven't heard or seen anything by Greg Howe in many years since I was trying to be a SHREDDER! This is ccool.

  • Is that a musicman or a peavey he is playing???

  • To my eyes, I think it's a Peavey, the head stock is too pointed and narrow at the end to Musicman. AT LEAST I THINK.

  • Yep, it's a Peavey. You can tell by the headstock's 3+3 tuning key configuration. Also, the fretboard is notched out for access to the truss rod adjustment bolt.

Musicman Axis guitars have headstocks with a 4+2 tuning key configuration, and the fretboard is not notched out for the truss rod bolt. I should know. I own one.

  • musicman axis

  • yeah, that's a Peavey HP Special, Greg played it for quite a bit, but now as you surely know he plays his beautiful Laguna guitar ; ]

  • musicman

  • forget it its a peavey! ;)

  • Part 1 was much better. Vamping on E7#9 gets old pretty fast.

  • Amazing!

  • seen it yesterday! lets chat

want to chat with singles J7

  • You are a great player Greg....80`s 90`s and always

  • its amazing!!!... "HOWE" he does it, amazing

  • Bloody hell... I kept hearing about this guy and I am glad I finally checked him out. How good was that- my God this guy can play and his tapping is phenomenal. The song was groovy and the solo was magical... Awesum!!!!!!

  • Same here!

  • his tapping stlye is unique. He does it in arpeggios in triplets. I like it better than one string piano VH style tapping

  • @gweetarshredder welcome to Greg Howe! He and Shawn Lane gave us a lot to work on technically and tonally.

  • Part 1 has him soloing over the changes a lot more. This sounds like Purple Haze.

  • Sure its got the E vamp but this a guitar show he is at. Do they want to hear endless bars of post-bop swing. I feel its a great interpretation of the tune. I am sure the bass player and the keyboard player (who plays the changes) could do it as could Greg. It would have perhaps been cool to see them swing it for a couple of chrouses but the temp is down a bit. But thats not the point of their perfomance. Its an interpretation and a cool one at that.

  • I would only believe that this guy could play over Trane changes when I hear him do it. Sure he is a good guitarist, but Trane changes are though to conquer since they aren't like the usual jazz stuff. If you listen to the original recording of GS with Tommy Flanagan, you will notice that even him got serious trouble with this changes...

  • Listen to part 1, bro. Don't tell me Greg Howe can't solo over Trane changes. He does it very well.

  • great guitar playing. CTROCK THE HIP HOP ROCK ARTIST

  • This dude eat guitars!...great player

  • this solo is so ridiculous

  • Dude you know I hate critics always got something negative to say I bet you are not even half that good you are insulting a bad ass legend you need to see this in person on a gig and you would not make a stupid comment like that so do not hate congatulate Greg is the true

  • Are you sure you meant to reply to this comment? Where I come from that is a compliment. haha Like Ridiculously good. But yes - this man is godly.

  • It is not..its a technical solo

    but its pretty cool..

this guy is a guitar master

  • Check out the 'Invisible Way" video with Dennis Chambers and Sakurai "Gentle Hearts" tour ! Sick !

  • Great!

  • Impressive, Greg is one of the best.

  • HE'S THE MAN !!!!!

  • DAmn !

  • I was quite excited when i saw the title, i thought Greg was going to play through the ridiculous chord changes in the original but ended up being a funk thing :( Still awesome though.

  • he does in part 1 of the vid :)

  • greg rules!!!

to greg fans: pls check out my vids if you have time.

  • greg always delivers!

  • DAMN ! THE IS SICK !

  • This is some bad stuff ! Throwin down !

  • this is Giant Steps???

  • that part with the wah thrown on sounded pretty bad ass

  • I'm pretty damn sure he's watched Jeff Beck a few times...

  • You have to see Howe "live" his studio recordings really don't do him justice.

  • I disagree! I actually like his playing on the studio albums better than most of his live playing. He's probably my favourite guitar player out there but I haven't heard him play as amazing live as he did on the studio version of "stringed sanity". He seems a bit shy at times. On studio albums he never tends to run out of ideas whilst live he can sometimes play one lick 2 times :o Still; what an AWESOME guitarist he is :)

  • esta buenisimo, pero no es giant steps, se toca todo igual, pero no es la armonia de giant steps, de hecho es un groove sobre una tonalidad

  • things that happen when you start by part 2....he actually plays over the changes on part 1 lol.

  • I think Greg Howe is the most tasteful Guitar player over Vai, Yngwie,Satriani,George Linch and Paul Gibert nothing against neither guitarist but I like Greg's style of phasing and how he resolve with a tasteful lick

  • greg is a beast! from his neoclasical stuff to funky/fusion! his music is so enjoyable! it makes me happy!

  • so who's in the band in this??

  • hi check out my fusion licks!!

  • its probably a different tune just same name..dorks!!

  • no. He played the melody in part 1

  • Nothing against Howe per se, but how is this Giant Steps?

I've racked my brains trying to outline the changes to GS'S trying to do noon-modal improv?1?.......

  • greg howe makes music that i consider PERFECT

    watch?v=jIAsNx5HcVY <--- gorgeous song, chec it ;D

  • buena musica

  • ahahah giant steps ????????????????

  • Giant Steps???

  • john coltrane...look him up...a legend

  • props, coltrane is stellar!!

  • Yeah I agree, part 1 was alot better. He actually played through the changes. This here is basically just a vamp jam session.

  • hi greg, if you post the high gear video, i will be very happy, thank you

  • how is this giant steps?

  • Well, that solo is in a Em dorian vamp, but they played the theme... ok...

  • greg howe is rules

  • omg he is just the best guitarist ever to set fingers on a fretboard!!!

  • unmistakable sound

  • I love the vibrato he does!

  • peavey custom shop

  • goddamit i really lik the tone. especialy the wah solo. Goddanm!

  • Hey 12AX7, I'll tell ya why...HE NEVER BREATHES IN HIS SOLOS! He never plays any space in his solos! Every phrase just runs into one another after a while. But...I dig him when I'm in the mood for pure fuzeoid fretboard freakout.

  • I was curious to hear soloing over "giant steps", which has a million chord changes. This was all just over a one chord vamp in E.

Perhaps the wrong video was put up by mistake?

Is lickableplum joking or confusing Greg & Steve Howe?

  • No it's the right video.. Check out the first part of the 2. He does play the melody with the changes... sort of... He chops it up with the riff in E. The first chorus each guy does is over the changes then they just sit in E for ages. It's a bit of a dodgy version to be honest. I prefer the original.

  • I wish I could play like Howe; that said, compare this to Coltrane and it just ain't there, this is way slowed down, blowin over a one chord vamp; Holdsworth could blow through the changes with great rhythmic phrasing at original tempo; that would be the shit! (Like he did with "Countdown")

  • i think his best riff is owner of a lonely heart

  • youre thinking of steve howe

  • this is wolfgang but not the most famous EVH model. it's custom shop special. ...probably ;)

  • this is a ''MUSIC MAN Ernieball'' model

  • This is actually an HP Special, its basically the replacement guitar for the EVH Wolfgang... Same one Mark Rizzo plays. Love the Wolfgang, miss it, with it had never went away but oh well, at least I have one.

  • it is a peavey

  • why can I not find Howe interesting? hes is so good, but I just cant watch him for more them 60 seconds?

  • I totally agree with you,12AX7power. Watching this i was running through a list in my head of players who aren't as good, but who i prefer. But I can't work out why. Maybe he just isn't loud enough! Listen to SRV his guitar is as loud as drums and bass combined!

  • damn he is stiff as hell when he plays.

  • Shawn Lane

  • Greg Howe is the fuckin man

  • Incredible as usual from Greg....

  • Great playing, but I don't hear Giant Steps lol (the tune has chord changes, even if you ignore the head.)

  • Not a Wolfgang, a Peavey HP special. Fairly major changes done to the newbie that Ed wouldn't allow with his model.

  • This man can play any style with the same power.

    AMAZING!!!

    ESTE É O KRA

Da le Howe , es o mejor, sin duda.

  • ???

  • this guy can sure jamm.. love his music

  • Greg Howe & Tony MacAlpine best players on earth lol thank 4 tha vid man

  • Greg Howe rules...now the best jazz rock guitarist of World

  • greg howe is 1 of my all time favorite

  • Wow!! Greg Jammin a Wolfgang Custom!!

  • Greg , i could listen to your playing all day(and i often have!!)Great version here.Effortless , flowing playing as ever. You are keeping Jazz and Rock guitar playing very much alive and keeping it present tense. You have helped my playing through your great albums and compositions.Cheers!!

  • Killer!! Anyone who HASN'T heard the original by John Coltrane NEEDS to seek it out. Due yourself a favor. This is a great cover Greg!
