Greg is awesome but I am listening to the board player and this is solo is not across Giant Steps ... it s a short progression attached to the tune giving Greg much latitude
The fact that it seems some people didn't hear giant steps in this (most of part 1 is soloing over those changes with a hendrixy 7sharp9 vamp as an occasional interlude) is maybe a testimony to the fact that greg howe uses a wide range of expressive rock guitar techniques and a surprisingly melodic approach over a tough progression without breaking a sweat. Distorted rock guitar is such an involved instrument to control and loads of 'legit' jazz-sounding people struggle to hear gs this well.
@screamingken wait....i'm not dissing greg howe, but this literally is not the john coltrane composition giant steps. those chord changes are not occurring here.
this is great...but i dont see why the guitars, horns and keys complains so much when a drummer solo's....every musician solo's....yeah there has to be a pocket but the pocket is tru for all instruments not jyuss the drums...if all musicians could keep there own timing like a drummer then evryone can jam like this....
I listen to Mike Stern, Frank Gambale, John Scofield, Al Dimiola, George Benson, Santana etc. etc. and for me he plays the most perfect and excellent solos. They are musical, great chops, tones, and feel ! Greg Howe ! Damn !
I'm really getting sick of the jazz purists bashing Greg so much. especially when they talk about his shredding. Greg has so much more under his belt than the typical jazz player. he can be funky, he can rock, he can be smooth, he can do anything. His phrasing is beyond any jazz player IMO and his timing is good as any other guy. Much more complex and filled with character. he never plays the same thing twice in any of his solos. He sounds original unlike all of those john Scofielfd wannabes.
@SirJamestheIII Amen to that. Greg is a spectacular player, I really don't see how anyone could have negative criticism towards him. You can learn a lot from a player like this.
If you are paying attention to the harmony, you are paying attention to the wrong thing. The point of the video is to highlight the guitarist's skill, not the ability of the band to play a complex harmony.
Plus, I think the mix is a little off making it harder to hear some of the bassier sounds.
Yep, it's a Peavey. You can tell by the headstock's 3+3 tuning key configuration. Also, the fretboard is notched out for access to the truss rod adjustment bolt.
Musicman Axis guitars have headstocks with a 4+2 tuning key configuration, and the fretboard is not notched out for the truss rod bolt. I should know. I own one.
Bloody hell... I kept hearing about this guy and I am glad I finally checked him out. How good was that- my God this guy can play and his tapping is phenomenal. The song was groovy and the solo was magical... Awesum!!!!!!
Sure its got the E vamp but this a guitar show he is at. Do they want to hear endless bars of post-bop swing. I feel its a great interpretation of the tune. I am sure the bass player and the keyboard player (who plays the changes) could do it as could Greg. It would have perhaps been cool to see them swing it for a couple of chrouses but the temp is down a bit. But thats not the point of their perfomance. Its an interpretation and a cool one at that.
I would only believe that this guy could play over Trane changes when I hear him do it. Sure he is a good guitarist, but Trane changes are though to conquer since they aren't like the usual jazz stuff. If you listen to the original recording of GS with Tommy Flanagan, you will notice that even him got serious trouble with this changes...
Dude you know I hate critics always got something negative to say I bet you are not even half that good you are insulting a bad ass legend you need to see this in person on a gig and you would not make a stupid comment like that so do not hate congatulate Greg is the true
I was quite excited when i saw the title, i thought Greg was going to play through the ridiculous chord changes in the original but ended up being a funk thing :( Still awesome though.
I disagree! I actually like his playing on the studio albums better than most of his live playing. He's probably my favourite guitar player out there but I haven't heard him play as amazing live as he did on the studio version of "stringed sanity". He seems a bit shy at times. On studio albums he never tends to run out of ideas whilst live he can sometimes play one lick 2 times :o Still; what an AWESOME guitarist he is :)
I think Greg Howe is the most tasteful Guitar player over Vai, Yngwie,Satriani,George Linch and Paul Gibert nothing against neither guitarist but I like Greg's style of phasing and how he resolve with a tasteful lick
Hey 12AX7, I'll tell ya why...HE NEVER BREATHES IN HIS SOLOS! He never plays any space in his solos! Every phrase just runs into one another after a while. But...I dig him when I'm in the mood for pure fuzeoid fretboard freakout.
No it's the right video.. Check out the first part of the 2. He does play the melody with the changes... sort of... He chops it up with the riff in E. The first chorus each guy does is over the changes then they just sit in E for ages. It's a bit of a dodgy version to be honest. I prefer the original.
I wish I could play like Howe; that said, compare this to Coltrane and it just ain't there, this is way slowed down, blowin over a one chord vamp; Holdsworth could blow through the changes with great rhythmic phrasing at original tempo; that would be the shit! (Like he did with "Countdown")
This is actually an HP Special, its basically the replacement guitar for the EVH Wolfgang... Same one Mark Rizzo plays. Love the Wolfgang, miss it, with it had never went away but oh well, at least I have one.
I totally agree with you,12AX7power. Watching this i was running through a list in my head of players who aren't as good, but who i prefer. But I can't work out why. Maybe he just isn't loud enough! Listen to SRV his guitar is as loud as drums and bass combined!
